I just returned from  CRRA 's annual conference in Oakland, CA and SWANA 's WASTECON in Nashville, TN. The important take-away from both conferences is that  China's National Sword is on everyone's mind. 

Our challenge to address it is three-fold:
  • Clean up our recycling stream by helping consumers recycle better. 
  • Remind recyclers that they are the first sorters in a global commodity market and not just throwing out trash. 
  • Go back to the first two Rs, reinvigorating our focus on waste reduction and reuse.

Honky Tonk Glass Recycling!
Honky tonks in Nashville are famous for their music and long-neck glass bottles of beer.  Gary Roe, Eco Partners Vice President, joined a tour during WASTECON and learned about the city's new Honky Tonk Glass Recycling program. Here's an excerpt; read all about it here. 

Managers at The Second Fiddle, Layla's Honky Tonk, and Whiskey Bent Saloon gave us an inside look at their business and the nuts and bolts of implementing glass recycling from their perspective.  Bars along this famous section of Lower Broadway Street in Nashville (better known as "Lower Broad") typically serve beer only in longneck glass bottles to maintain the "honky tonk" ambience customers expect. 

And, they serve a lot of beer!  Sharon Smith, Assistant Director of Metro Nashville Public Works, says about two thirds of the 6,600 tons of trash generated downtown in 2017 was glass. Read on...
