HAIS Heads & Trustees Workshop: Sept. 10
Last  Chance  to Register!
This event is open to senior administration & trustees from HAIS member schools.
 
Debra Wilson, Esq. will be speaking on student well-being and legal considerations for schools & trustees, and Dr. Alexander Bivens will speak on child safety policy and best practices for schools. To see full details, the schedule, or to register for this event, please go to our website.
Accommodations: HAIS has arranged a group rate at the Kahala Hotel, applicable 3 nights prior and 3 nights after the event. For more information, please see the Workshop page.

HAIS & PBN "School Spotlight"
HAIS has formed a media partnership with Pacific Business News to promote private education in Hawai'i among prospective families through an equitable and strategic marketing plan. This initiative will help illustrate private school choice, while providing each school with a platform to highlight what it has to offer students. From August through January, each HAIS member school will be featured for one month in a " School Spotlight" as part of a group of 15 to 20 schools with a new group of schools being featured each month. To sign up to participate in the program, please complete this form.
HSDM Grants Available: Aug. 31
The Hawai'i Educational Networking Consortium (HENC) has announced that Hawai'i Schools Digital Media (HSDM) Grants are now available for the 2018/19 school year. $1,000 to $3,000 per school each year in support of curricular or extracurricular programs, student-produced digital media and video. For more information or to apply, please see this Flyer or go to their website.

HAIS Learning Walks: Sept. 7
HAIS Member Schools are invited to participate in the Fall 2018 Learning Walks. The goal of the Learning Walks is to improve practice through observation and reflection, while building collaboration among colleagues from HAIS member schools. Participants will spend a day observing at a host school, giving them the opportunity to reflect on their own practices and connect with like-minded educators. Each participating school will follow a similar schedule, hosting a group of up to 12 educators from other HAIS member schools. To host a Learning Walk, please complete this form. This workshop, "Addressing the Nature of Challenging Behavior in Young Children," helps teachers in understanding more about children's social-emotional behavior, and how to make sense of challenging behaviors and effective intervention strategies respectful of young learners. Early Childhood Educators are invited to participate in six consecutive workshops at no cost focused on how to become responsive to the nature of young childrenʻs learning. You will benefit from examining student work, viewing projects, applying workshop learning to your own classroom, and engaging in professional discussion. These questions of practice frame the workshop series:
  • Sept. 22: Who is the community of learners? When is documentation?
  • Oct.13: How is a project born?
  • Nov.17: When is a project a "project"?
  • Feb. 16: What is the Hundred Languages?
  • Mar. 9: What do I do with documentation?
  • Apr. 6: How can we make childrenʻs learning and thinking visible?

YogaEd. Tools for Teachers Workshop: Sept. 27

Barbara Bray Playshop: Oct. 10
School culture is important. When you walk through a school, you can tell right away if students and teachers are happy, engaged, challenged, and feel supported. Culture is about building a positive school climate based on the relationships with all stakeholders in the school community. This workshop takes a deep dive into:
  • the biggest issues facing us in our schools
  • the principles of a positive school culture
  • personal needs and the relationships with school practices
  • how to create relationships that matter
  • creating an environment where everyone wants to learn for the sake of learning
About Barbara:
Barbara Bray is a creative learning strategist who blogs at  Rethinking Learning  and is founder/owner of  My eCoach that are both divisions of her company, Computer Strategies, LLC. Barbara is past co-founder of Personalize Learning, LLC and is the co-author of  both books , Make Learning Personal and How to Personalize Learning. Barbara is a writer, coach, change agent, risk-taker, instructional designer, connector, and visionary. She decided to shake up her life and hosts a podcast,  Conversations on Learning . HAIS Travel & PD Scholarships  
We are pleased to offer needs-based PD Scholarships for administrators and faculty from HAIS Full Member schools to attend workshops, presentations and other PD-related events run by HAIS.  Neighbor Island Schools may apply for a maximum of two travel scholarships each year, with each award totaling up to $400. The awards are intended to defray the costs of attending HAIS events and can be used to cover airfare, lodging and other expenses,related to attending HAIS programs. 
 
HAIS PD Scholarships: Oahu and Neighbor Island Full Member Schools
These Scholarships are needs-based and available to administrators and faculty from HAIS Full Member Schools. Schools may apply for a maximum of three PD scholarships each year, which will cover the entire cost of registration at any HAIS event (excluding the Schools of the Future Conference).
 
To apply for a scholarship, please complete the  Scholarship Application Form. Upon approval, instructions will be sent to award recipients.

We are pleased to let you know that the expansive Hawaiʻi Educational Networking Consortium (HENC) video library is now available on the Hawai'i Association of Independent Schools Vimeo Channel.The channel, along with the monthly featured video, can be accessed on the HAIS Video Library Webpage.

HENC is a collaborative relationship which was established in December 1993 among the University of Hawaiʻi, the State Department of Education, and the East-West Center. For more information, please visit the  HENC Website.
8th Annual EMA Meeting: Sept. 25
Save the Date for the 8th Annual Enrollment Management Association (EMA) Meeting that will take place on September 25 at St. Louis School. This year's fall meeting will feature guest speaker Alexandra Scott. She will be speaking about "The Intersection of Gender Identity, Social Justice, and Mindfulness: How the Emergence of Transgender and Gender Non-Binary Children and Adults Creates a New Paradigm in Schools." This event is open to all school administrators, including Heads of School, Admissions Directors, Business Officers, Deans of Students and all other interested school leadership.  For more information or to register, please view the attached Flyer and their website.

NEW: LSOTF Pre-Conference & Leadership Track

LSOTF Pre-Conference November  7
School teams will explore how to co-create learner centered envi ronments that intentionally integrate student and teacher voice. A team of at least 3 individuals is required for participation and student and  teacher participation on each team is encouraged. Individuals wishing to participate should email  Deanna D'Olier , to be added to the waitlist.
Facilitator & Featured Speaker:  Dr. Katie Martin: Head of Partnerships @ AltSchool.  

LSOTF Track @ SOTF X November 8 & 9
The LSOTF track will include specific featured speakers and workshop sessions during the Schools of the Future Conference that will allow pre-conference attendees to further build upon ideas/plans developed during the pre-conference. The sessions in the track will be open to pre-conference attendees, school leaders and aspiring education leaders. The track will culminate with a reflection session at the end of Day 2 for those who participated in the pre-conference. This will both provide an opportunity to debrief the experience, and to plan for next steps to keep our community connected.

UH Athletics Drawing Contest: Aug. 31

The  University  of Hawai'i has received funding from the College Football Playoff Foundation Extra Yard for Teachers program that they're passing on to classrooms, and have selected to fund the elementary schools.
The initiative is a drawing contest where classrooms could win $500 to $2,500, and some other prizes for students.

Hawai'i International Film Festival Shorts: Oct. 15
The Hawai'i International Film Festival and the Daniel K Inouye Institute are inviting student creatives to create 1-3 minute shorts based off themes from Daniel K Inouye's historic speech at the 1968 Democratic Convention. There is no entry fee, and the students that are selected to have their pieces screened at HIFF will be awarded prizes by the DKII Institute as well as being offered festival passes to the 38th Annual Fall Festival.
