Wrapping Up 2019

What a year for the Brazil Gateway! In 2019, over 80 Ohio State affiliates received some support from the Brazil Gateway during their engagement with Brazilian collaborators and related grant application, including 60 faculty who visited Brazil to teach, conduct research and attend events. We also represented Ohio State at six high school fairs, nine high school visits, one undergraduate and graduate fair, four MBA fairs and four LL.M fairs, reaching out to almost 1,000 prospective students. Sesquicentennial Special—Alumni Stories that Shape our History

Once a Buckeye, always a Buckeye

Ana L. Kazan got her master's (1996) and her PhD (1999) in Agricultural Education from Ohio State. In 1999, her daughter, Julia Kazan, also spent some time at the Ohio State dance program. Ana Kazan has a been an ambassador for Ohio State in Brazil even before the Brazil Gateway was established, by reaching out to and gathering fellow Brazilian alumni in São Paulo.

Brazilian PhD Student Showcases Research

Current international visiting scholars to The Ohio State University were invited to submit their research summaries to be showcased at the 14th annual Research Scholar Exposition. Among the 34 finalists was Nathalia Cavichiolli, PhD student from the University of São Paulo School of Agriculture. Her research is in entomology. The goal of her study was to verify whether the fall armyworm's corn and rice strains present differences in gut microbiota composition, and her faculty mentor at Ohio State is Professor Andy Michael.

Ohio State Students Present at University of São Paulo International Symposium of Undergraduate Research

Six Ohio State undergraduate students were in Brazil from November 3-9 to participate in the University of São Paulo's International Symposium of Undergraduate Research (SIICUSP). SIICUSP is an annual event in which undergraduate students communicate the results of their research projects. It helps students improve their academic research skills and fosters the interaction of researchers from different areas and levels in order to promote collaboration and multidisciplinary research.

Intensive Portuguese Abroad for Spanish Teachers

The Ohio State Department of Spanish and Portuguese and the Center for Latin American Studies are launching their new program Intensive Portuguese Abroad for Spanish Teachers. This three-week workshop (July 5-25, 2020) in Portuguese linguistics is located in Curitiba. Participants' knowledge of Spanish will allow them to acquire Portuguese quickly. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until all spaces are filled.

International Research and Scholarship Grant

The Office of International Affairs, the Office of Research, the Graduate School, the Office of Student Academic Success and the Global Gateways are sponsoring a grant competition with separate tracks for faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students. Proposals are sought for a wide range of research and scholarship projects including the exploration of languages, cultures, arts, social sciences, and area studies. The application deadline is January 10, 2020.

Global Perspectives: Jaret Waters

Having the opportunity to study abroad has been a fundamental piece of my growth here at Ohio State. Being from a small town where I lived in a bubble of comfort, I grew up having serious difficulties with situations in which I was outside of my support system. The growth I have seen in myself—from being the child clinging to my mother's leg on the first day of first grade to the fearless adult boarding a plane by myself to the southern hemisphere—has empowered me with a sense of confidence that has spilled over into every other aspect of my life.
