Few days in a child's life are as precious as his or her birthday. Unfortunately, for far too many underprivileged children, that day passes with little celebration - if any at all. CRYP wants to make sure that the young children who attend The Main youth center have the birthday festivities they deserve.
Each month, The Main hosts a birthday party for the children whose birthdays fall during that month. To offset the cost of each party, CRYP seeks monthly sponsors to contribute $40 for the birthday cake. Please consider sponsoring a birthday cake this year! Every dollar makes such a difference in the lives of Cheyenne River's children.

Support CRYP Through the Band "Splinter" at Law Rocks Washington D.C.
Fundraising continues in the final weeks leading up to the Law Rocks Washington D.C. event on Thursday, Sept. 13. This fourth annual battle-of-the-bands for charity is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the 9:30 Club, and 100% of the proceeds from the band Splinter's fundraising efforts will benefit CRYP.
All performers in Law Rocks Washington D.C. are legal professionals turned rockstars, with each band raising money for its own preferred nonprofit organization. Splinter is currently in sixth place (out of nine) for total funds raised through sponsorship, donations and ticket sales.
To support the band's effort, you can either purchase tickets to attend the event or make an online donation; the bands with the most contributions get better spots in the lineup and have a better shot at winning a prize. And, again, 100% of the proceeds will benefit CRYP's youth programming at services on Cheyenne River!

CRYP Gives School Supplies to More Than 600 Children This Month
More than 600 children received school supplies as well as books, fleeces, shoes, soap and dental kits during this year's School Supplies Drive. CRYP's annual distribution too place on Thursday, Aug. 16 in the Cokata Wiconi (Center of Life) gymnasium.
During the distribution, children were able to choose backpacks, protractors, compasses, calculators, pencils, pens, crayons, writing tablets, folders, kid-friendly scissors, erasers, glue sticks, rulers and so much more. There were, notes Executive Director Julie Garreau, a lot of happy faces during what was essentially a back-to-school shopping day.
"They were so excited about their new backpacks, and getting to choose their favorite colors and styles of pencil cases, folders, notebooks and other items," Garreau reports. "We saw such joy, and relief, because the kids know they'll be well-prepared on the first day of school. That's how it should be for all children, everywhere."
This year's annual School Supplies Drive was made possible by contributions from Running Strong for American Indian Youth in Alexandria, Virginia, and many individual donors across the country.

Our Kids Finally Have Their New KaBoom Playground!
On Saturday, July 28, a dedicated group of volunteers transformed an empty site into a kid-designed, state-of-the-art playground at Cheyenne River Youth Project. In just six hours, 38 volunteers did the work of 100-plus-and CRYP's children now have the KaBoom play space they've wanted since 2015.
"Hats off to KaBoom, the Playworld staff, Wells Fargo and the Wells Fargo volunteers, the United Way, LDS Church, Partnership for Native Americans, Dietel Partners, Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Property and Supply, and CRST Housing Authority," said Julie Garreau, CRYP's executive director. "I also want to extend a heartfelt thanks to my staff, my family members and all the community volunteers who came to help. I can't say enough good things about you all."

Teens Attend "College Night" at Cokata Wiconi on Aug. 15
A heartfelt thanks to Wyatt Jewett and Torrie Eagle Staff for taking the time on Tuesday, Aug. 15, to speak with our youth about their college experiences at, respectively, Columbia University and Stanford University. It's important for our teens to learn more about higher education from other Lakota students who have first-hand experience and can offer perspective, guidance and answers. Wopila!

When young children participate in their first programs or activities at the Cheyenne River Youth Project, they're embarking on a journey that likely will continue through their teen years and into their adult lives. One child might drop into The Main for arts and crafts, another might enjoy playing in the new playground or joining friends in something more structured like Bike Club.
Or, a child might want to learn how to care for the plants in CRYP's Winyan Toka Win (Leading Lady) Garden. When young Eagle Butte resident Mason Arpan saw young people at work in the garden, he knew that was something he wanted to do-and not just through The Main's Garden Club. He was interested in the Native Food Sovereignty Internship for older youth.
Mason's interests already were geared toward the outdoors. He had just started his own lawn-care business, Ship Shape Lawns, which he called both an interest and a hobby.
"I had always wanted to own a business, but my mom would never let me because I was too young," says Mason, now 12. "Finally, when I turned 9, she let me."
At around the same time, Mason discovered CRYP programming through Winyan Toka Win.
"I told my mom that I wanted to work in the garden like the kids I used to see," he remembers. "The internship really appealed to me, because it would provide educational experiences and an opportunity to learn job skills that could be a part of my life in future internships and jobs."
