REMOTE LEARNING FOR ALL STUDENTS BEGINS MONDAY, AUGUST 24, 2020

Thank you for your responses to our presentation of the Cuyahoga Heights Schools Back to School Plan, and the parent survey sent out last week.

As I shared during last Wednesday's Board Meeting, the Cuyahoga County Board of Health (CCBOH) recently held an online meeting with superintendents from Cuyahoga County and surrounding communities. At that time, the CCBOH recommended that all Cuyahoga County schools begin the school year with remote instruction.

Our administrative team met shortly after that announcement and came to a consensus that we will start the school year remotely.

There are many details that we will be working on over the next few days to provide you with a comprehensive look at how remote learning will work in our district. Our plan is to share those details by the end of the week. Here's what we can share with you in the meantime:
  • We have enough Chromebooks so that every one of our students will have his or her own device for daily instruction. Family members will not need to share Chromebooks.
  • We have a limited number of hot spots available for homes in need of an internet connection.
  • Our own extraordinary Cuyahoga Heights Schools teaching staff will direct the remote learning.
  • Schedules will be created and distributed for every grade level and for all high school classes.
  • We will host several orientation events so that families can pick up Chromebooks for their children and ask questions of our teachers before remote learning begins.
  • Attendance will be tracked. The Ohio Department of Education has informed us that we will be reporting attendance.
  • Students will be assessed in a variety of ways and grades will be given.
  • We will conduct a gap analysis at the beginning of the year to determine student needs so that we can create learning plans for each child.
There are several additional items that we are working on to assist families with learning at home:
  • We are looking into the possibility of developing online learning sites throughout our community. We are hopeful that we can secure sites that can accommodate families of K-6 students which do not have adult supervision for their students during the day.
  • These online learning sites are not daycare.
  • Students participating in education through an online learning site would be expected to bring their devices each day so that they could complete their online learning assignments during their scheduled time on-site.
  • As you can imagine, there are many details to be worked out for this concept to become reality. We will update you as soon as we have more information to share.
Finally, the first day of school has been moved to Monday, August 24th. Thank you in advance for your patience as we work to develop our plans for successful remote learning later this month. We will keep you informed every step of the way.
