Beating the Heat
Thank you for your understanding with the half-days that were scheduled this week due to the heat advisory and the rising temperatures in the classrooms. These 2 days counted as school days and will not need to be made up.

Once families return the emergency contact paperwork this week, we will process it and enter it into our database so email addresses and phone numbers will be updated for future emergency notifications. Later in September, you will receive information about how to opt-in to receive text messages instead of phone calls.

We'd like to give a special thank you to the school districts who accommodated our students transportation needs with the early dismissals. We would also like to thank two community businesses who came forward unsolicited to offer relief to our students. Mr. Skehan at the York Ice Rink offered discounted ice skating Wednesday afternoon and Rita's Italian Ice on Queen Street supplied the entire student body and staff discount coupons to help cool off.

Thanks to all of you for your support.

York Catholic Fund
New School Year.  New Opportunity.
As we embark on a new school year and continue to grow as a YC family and community, our thoughts turn to those who generously support our efforts each year to ensure that growth. Thank you to all who contribute to our annual giving campaign and help to create a bright future for our students and school.

With a new school year also comes a new year of inspiration, successes, and opportunity. You will see our theme of "Values Matter" thread throughout our daily activities and it is our core beliefs that will reinforce the unity of our students, faculty, alumni, and friends. Together, we will continue to make York Catholic one of the premier schools in our area.

Your Donor Dollars at Work
Because of your generous ongoing support of the York Catholic Fund, we are able to maintain one of the lowest secondary school tuition costs in the Diocese of Harrisburg. This past year, we were able to provide 36% of our student body with financial assistance, increase student programs, incorporate new courses into the curriculum, including the return of Latin, install a number of safety upgrades over the summer, and purchase additional Chromebooks as we continue our migration toward one-to-one technology for our students.

You Make a Difference
Thanks to the generous financial support of our graduates, parents, friends, and community partners, this past year the York Catholic Fund raised more than $300,000 (a school best!) and allowed us to further close the gap between the cost of tuition and the actual cost to educate each student. In addition, with your help, we can invest more into our student activities, professional development for our valued teachers, technology, and school improvements. Each gift, no matter the amount, makes an impact.

Thank You for Choosing YC
We recognize there may be many causes near to your heart and you have a number of choices when it comes to your financial support. Thank you for putting our York Catholic students at the top of your list. We would be honored to recognize you among our annual donors and for those who give $1,000 (or more annually -- July through June), you are included in our Mystical Rose Society.

This year marks our 90th Anniversary and our long tradition of a values-based education will continue to guide our students to develop personal integrity, make good choices, and serve the greater good whether in their own communities or beyond.

You are a valued member of our YC family and your continued dedication and commitment to our mission truly makes a difference. Please consider giving to our 2018-2019 York Catholic Fund so our treasured students continue to grow in faith, mind, heart, and family.  Thank you!

Lunch Accounts
The Lunchtime link is now available for you to deposit lunch money into your student's account.

Our Lunchtime Point of Sale purchasing system for student lunches is connected directly to the Vision online parent portal (formerly MMS) accessible through the York Catholic website. Parents simply log in to the Vision parent portal, choose "More" in the upper right corner, select "Fees," and click "Make Cafeteria Deposit."  As parents, you will be able to view what your student is purchasing in the cafeteria and the remaining balance in the account.  To ensure we are using this system to its potential, everyone is required to use their Lunchtime account log in to pay for his or her lunch meals. The following policies are in place regarding Lunchtime Accounts and Balances. We encourage parents to sign up for email notification when their Lunchtime account balances are getting low.
  • Checks and/or cash are not accepted in the cafeteria for food purchases during lunch periods. It is the responsibility of the student to submit a check (not cash) in a sealed envelope (clearly labeled with his/her name, grade, and student ID number) and place it in the Lunchtime box located in the cafeteria for the student's account to be credited. The minimum check amount is $10. Funds may not be available for 24 hours.
  • It is the student and parent's responsibility to monitor the Lunchtime account online for balance information and retain a positive balance at all times.
  • If a student has a lunchtime balance at $0.00 or below, they will only have the option to purchase a lunch consisting of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, fruit, and drink (1% white milk, iced tea, or orange drink) for $3.00.
  • No refunds will be given during the school year. Seniors will be issued a refund on accounts with a balance of $5 or more after graduation unless they have a sibling enrolled at YC in which case the balance will be transferred to the sibling for the next school year. All underclassmen accounts will roll-over to the next school year.
  • Report cards and Vision access will be held at the end of each quarter if Lunchtime balances are not current.
If you need assistance accessing your Vision account, please contact Deb Gingerich at  [email protected]  or 717-846-8871 x219.
Back to School Night
We hope to see you at Back to School Night Tuesday, September 11, at 6 PM. The evening begins with a School Board Leadership and Principal Presentation.  Immediately following the presentation, parents will meet the teachers and learn about class expectations. We look forward to seeing all of our parents in attendance.
Attendance Reminders
A parent must provide written or emailed notice of all absences from a scheduled school day.
Please review the following attendance policies:

Absences
From Student Handbook, pages 25-27:

Attendance is required of all enrolled students during the days and hours school is in session. Parents/Guardians have the responsibility of ensuring their students attend and remain in school daily. Students may be excused for temporary absences when satisfactory evidence is provided to warrant a reasonable cause for the absence. Since daily instruction of material by the teacher is essential in our educational system, an absence of even one day may, understandably, result in lower grades.

More than ten days of accumulated absence is considered excessive. This limit does not include pre-approved educational trips or absence due to a death in the family. After 10 accumulated days of absence (excused and/or unexcused combined), a physician's excuse will be required for each additional absence (partial day or full day). Students with a history of chronic absence may be required to provide a physician's excuse prior to the accumulation of 10 days.

For YCHS students, twenty days absence is sufficient to warrant repeating the school year. The matter will be decided by the administration. Taken into consideration will be the frequencies of absences, reasons for the absences, attempts to make up work missed during the absences, etc.

Excuses will be kept on file. Cooperation in this matter is essential because of state laws governing school attendance. Pennsylvania School Law states that "excused" absences (including partial day/lateness) include  ONLY the following:
  • Doctor/dentist appointments
  • School scheduled educational trips
  • Authorized school activities
  • Illness
The school reserves the right to excuse students for any reason. Any absence with no note or approval will be marked "Non-excused" and the student will be assigned detention.

Early Dismissal/Late Arrival
From Student Handbook, page 26:

When a student is absent from school, or needs to be dismissed early from school, or will be late arriving to school, the following procedure is to be observed:
  1. The parent/guardian calls the school attendance secretary. Call each day of absence by 8:30 a.m. using voice mail to give the reason for the absence, late arrival, or early dismissal.
  2. For early dismissals, a note is required in advance of the dismissal time in order for the student to leave school property. Parents picking up children must sign students out at the Attendance Office. If student drivers are to transport themselves, specific permission to do so must be granted by the parent.
  3. Upon returning to school, the student has 2 school days to present a note to the Attendance Secretary with the following information; failure to do so will result in an unexcused absence and assigned detention.
  • Name of Student
  • Date(s) of Absence
  • Reason for Absence
  • Signature of Parent/Guardian
Any student arriving to school after 12:00 p.m. is not permitted to participate in any after school events that day. Pennsylvania School Law states that "excused" absences (including partial day/lateness) include ONLY the following:
  • Doctor/dentist appointments
  • School scheduled educational trips
  • Authorized school activities
  • Illness
The school reserves the right to excuse students for any reason. After 10 days of accumulated lateness to school (excused and/or unexcused combined), a physician's excuse will be required for each additional absence.

College Visits
From Student Handbook, page 27:

Any student wishing to visit a college must have a note from a parent requesting a visit to the college two days in advance. The student will then receive a "college visit" form fromYC's College & Career Counselor. This form must be submitted on time to be excused for the visit. The Admissions Office of the college will verify the visit on the form. Two college visits will be permitted per year. Students are required to obtain work in advance. Failure to follow this procedure will result in a "non-excused" absence and teachers will not be required to accept work. If the visit is two days or more, the student must obtain a trip form from the Studies Office.

Tardiness
From Student Handbook, page 27:

Tardiness is lateness due to negligence. Students should not be admitted late to homeroom without a pass. Verbal warnings may be given the first and second times a student is tardy. The third tardy and all subsequent negligence of this nature for the year will result in the student being assigned to detention. If a student is tardy more than ten times during the school year, tardiness becomes a major infraction and will result in four days detention for each subsequent day of lateness. Please understand that tardiness could affect your participation in extracurricular activities, athletics, and music.

Advanced Placement Scholars
The scores of the national Advanced Placement (AP) exams for high school students are in and York Catholic students have again excelled.

Advanced Placement (AP) courses offer high school students college level rigor with AP students dedicating long hours of study that begin during the summer months and end in May with a national exam. AP courses are offered through College Board, and exams are four hours in length. Exams are graded on a scale of 1-5 with one the lowest grade possible and five the highest grade possible. Many colleges and universities accept a score of three or higher for college credit, a motivating factor for the students enrolled.

York Catholic offers Advanced Placement courses in English, Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, and US History. This spring 32 York Catholic students took a total of 42 AP exams, with a 95% pass rate of a 3 or higher. Of those 42 tests, 16 students scored a 5, 15 students scored a 4, and 9 students scored a 3.

AP Scholars with Honors are students who earn scores of 3 or higher on four or more AP exams. Brian Hand from the class of 2018 achieved this honor. Brian is now enrolled at the United States Naval Academy. AP Scholars are students who earn scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams. The following five graduates from the class of 2018 have been recognized as AP Scholars: Carolyn Albright, Catholic University; Katelyn Danczyk, Penn State University; Nicholas Gaito, York College of Pennsylvania; Rachel Lyter, Mount St. Mary's; and Emma Poff, Gettysburg College.
