Sullivan Scoop

August 24, 2018
Dear Sullivan Families,

It has been a wonderful start to the 2018-19 school year! Welcome back to our returning Sullivan families, and a warm welcome to our new families. I have enjoyed meeting your children this week, and I am looking forward to meeting parents next week at Parent Night on August 29th! This week I was able to get into almost every classroom to read aloud to the children and to start building a personal connection. We read the book One by Kathryn Otoshi and talked about building a positive school community and making others feel like they count. As much as I enjoyed the read aloud and discussion, I must say that the question and answer sessions with the kids were the highlight of the week. They surprised me by asking some pretty interesting and thought provoking questions, in addition to the usual questions about my favorites. I look forward to visiting the rest of the classrooms on Monday!

Our staff worked hard during the weeks leading up to this one to ensure our buildings and classrooms were ready for our students. A special thank you to Mr. Blanco and Mr. Hitzeman, out custodians, for making our building look WONDERFUL! I also want to recognize our office staff, Mrs. Caffero and Mrs. Zawacki, for working so hard to make the start of the year as smooth as possible. Finally, thank you to our teaching staff for making the classrooms warm and welcoming for our students.

We have made some exciting changes at Sullivan for this school year! Staff members were hard at work over the summer participating in professional development, working with colleagues on summer curriculum projects, and further developing our PBIS system. This is going to be a positive and productive year! I can't wait to share more about our school next week at Parent Night. Have a wonderful weekend!

Warmly,

Get Involved...Volunteer in our LMC!
Mrs. Yager is looking for volunteers to help in our library throughout the year. Use our Library Sign Up Genius to volunteer once in a while or every week. We appreciate our parent volunteers who help our school run smoothly!
A Book to Bridge Two Schools
The library media specialists at Ross and Sullivan (Mrs. Strachn & Mrs. Yager) have collaborated on a wonderful opportunity for our students. All of the teachers are reading Book Uncle and Me aloud to their classes during the first few weeks of school. The text teaches the impact one individual can have on society. Students will have a chance to Skype with the author next month. What an opportunity!
As a part of the Book to Bridge Two Schools Project, we invite Sullivan and Ross families to build and install Free Little Libraries! We are looking for handy volunteers to help, as well as material donations. Click the button below for specifics about the project!

The First Day

Everyone from our first year teachers to our veterans had smiles on their faces to greet our students on Tuesday!
Kickoff Assembly
Today we held our Sullivan Kickoff Assembly. The students learned about our theme for the year, which is The Power of Yet! Click here to view the fun video we used to introduce the theme. Teachers will share more about fostering a growth mindset during parent night next week.

We reviewed expectations, and had our first weekly raffle! Our students were excited to win prizes with the tickets they earned for following expectations.

Students also learned about the Sullivan Ambassadors program, and this afternoon had the opportunity to participate in filling Blessing Bags for the I Am project. Click here to read more about this worthwhile endeavor!
