Special Congregational Meeting
Special Congregational Meeting
September 16, 2018

A Special Congregational Meeting has been called for  Sunday, September 16  after the worship service,  11:30 am.

The purpose of this Special Congregational Meeting is to vote on having a Special Capital Campaign to collect $20,000 to rebuild the organ, which was damaged by lightning on July 2.  Below are the pertinent points and will help to explain why the Church Council voted to ask for your approval for a Special Capital Campaign.
  • The rebuilt organ will cost about $20,000 more than the insurance payment for the lightning damage to the organ.
  •  We do not want to abandon the organ for use in services. Discussion was held regarding the timing of the special campaign in relation to the stewardship campaign; the goal is to have an immediate campaign prior to the November stewardship campaign.
  • Rivierstad, the organ company, will accept payment in three installments:  40%/40%/20%.  That means the work could begin prior to full payment.
  • The rebuild process will take about five to six weeks.
  • It is a unique opportunity to protect ourselves for the future and to have a better instrument that will serve the current needs of the church for many years to come. The new technology of the rebuilt organ will mean an upgrade to today's standards, and it will better serve the congregation with significantly improved sound quality.  The rebuilt organ will be equivalent to a new organ which would cost in the neighborhood of $100,000.
  • The rebuild will come with a 10-year warranty and regularly scheduled maintenance over this period.
  • The rebuilt organ will use modern computer hard drive technology that is readily available using non-proprietary materials, thus making any future repairs much less expensive and it will also be less susceptible to this type of damage.
  • Some special events, musical or other types, may be held to generate pledges.
Your vote is needed!   Please plan to attend.

Thank you!
The St. Luke Staff

A Message from Our Pastor
Dear St. Luke Saints,
Twenty five years ago I was honored to receive a call to serve as a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. This past Saturday was a very special evening to reflect and to celebrate the occasion with you at the 25th Anniversary Banquet. I am very grateful for you and for this congregation. It was a great thrill to walk into the CFC and to be greeted by so many supportive and loving faces. You also blessed us with cash gifts totaling over $1,200 that we will use for a vacation.  It is truly a blessing to serve God's people here at St. Luke.
On Sunday, September 9 we are not going to have our regular worship service, instead we will have a day of service . We call this God's Work, Our Hands Sunday and this will be our fifth year of participating. ELCA Lutherans from around the country will join us in serving our neighbors. All members and friends of St. Luke are invited to join in this day of service beginning at 9 am. We will end with a cook out in the church pavilion at noon.
Calling all members, on September 16, we will have a special called Congregational Meeting. The purpose of the meeting is very specific; to vote on a proposal to raise $20,000 to fix and upgrade our organ. A lightning power surge disabled our organ. The goal is to have the organ repaired and improved so we can worship God with the organ for our Reformation Service on October 28, 2018. You will be hearing much more about this in the coming weeks.
A Ministry Fair is planned for Sunday, September 23 in the Narthex. The purpose of this is to highlight the many ministries that are available here at St. Luke. It is my hope that each of us will serve on a ministry team here at St Luke. At the ministry fair you can see some of the ways you can serve, and use your gifts and talents to serve God and neighbor.
On Sunday, September 30 we will host a New Member's Class at St. Luke immediately following the worship service. A lunch will be served as a part of the class. All are invited to attend.
September is a busy month, I hope you can join in these faith building activities,

Grace and Peace,

A Message From Our Council President
Greetings St. Luke Saints,

As I write this we have just wrapped up the celebration of Pastor Cliff's 25 th anniversary of his ordination. The Lord has blessed St. Luke with Pastor's ministry over the past 16 years. Personally, Cliff has been a major influence in all parts of my life and I can truly say that I wouldn't be the person that I am today without him. We thank Lisa, Sophia and Linnea for sharing him with us!

As you have noticed our organ has been out of commission most of the summer. It was damaged by lightning and we have been diligently working the claim with our insurance company. Jacob Allen, our new Music Director, has been instrumental in interpreting organ lingo and providing expert insights. We are in a unique position to use this incident as an opportunity to upgrade our organ to the latest technology. The technology currently in our organ is 20 years old and has become increasing difficult to source and quite costly. Thus, the manufacturer will only warranty the parts for 90 days. If we choose to upgrade the organ to the latest technology most of the parts are readily available and repairs will cost significantly less. In addition, the upgraded parts will have a 10-year warranty along with routine service. This will essentially ensure that our organ, worth over $120,000, will continue to be enjoyed for many years to come.

As you have surmised, the upgrade comes with a price. The insurance company provides all of the funds to fix what we have now but the upgrade will cost approximately an additional $20,000. Your Council leadership has prayerfully considered all options and unanimously endorse the upgrade.

The Council has called a special Congregational meeting on September 16 th to provide every Saint with all of the details that we have considered in coming to this decision. We believe that after this discussion the Congregation will endorse a brief capital campaign to raise the required funds for the upgrade. Our organ is such a special part of our Lutheran worship and tradition and we believe that this opportunity will secure this for the next generation. Please ask any Council member - or better yet - Jacob Allen, for details and please pray with us for God's discernment and direction.

God's Peace,
Jim Allay

Tuesday Ladies' Bible Study

Psalm 23: The Shepherd With Me

Most of us are familiar with Psalm 23 and each of us have our  own interpretation of these words.  Beginning Tuesday, September 11th at 10am a new Bible study is beginning in room #135 that will focus on these verses and explore a new way to look at them.  Psalm 23: The Shepherd With Me, written by Jennifer Rothschild, is a seven-session video-based Bible study, where you will:

  • Experience the depths of God's care for you tucked in the psalm you've always loved.
  • Discover how to let your guard down and let God's presence be your confidence.
  • Learn that your vulnerability is not a liability because your Shepherd made you to need Him.

It is my hope that through this study of Psalm 23, you will know the Shepherd is with you and you are safe with your Shepherd in every situation, in every season.

- Tanya

A Stephen Minister
comes alongside a hurting person and meets with that person on a weekly basis to listen, care, encourage, pray, and provide emotional and spiritual support. Men are paired with men; women with women.

Over the years, well over one-and-a-half million people throughout the world have benefited from the one-to-one, Christ-centered care of a Stephen Minister. This care is entirely confidential-no one knows the identity of a care receiver except for his or her Stephen Minister and the pastor or Stephen Leader who paired the two together.

Perhaps you have had a need for someone to walk with you ...but noone was there!  Perhaps it is now up to you to make sure someone else does have that special someone! Training classes begin Sept. 8

"The Best 50 Hours of Training You'll Ever Experience!"!

New Members' Class - Sunday, September 30, 11:30am New member Class 4 2013
We love having visitors at St. Luke, and invite you to learn more about our church and what we believe, and to become a St. Luke Saint! Let Pastor Cliff or Paul White know if you'd like to attend this special class to learn more about us!
New members will be received into the congregation on Sunday, October 14 at the 10am Worship Service.

T2 Ministry Team Update
Greetings from the T-2 Ministry Team ("T-2" is the abbreviation for "Transformation 2.0")! Our Team is comprised of: Paul Wright (Team Leader), Sue Malone, Sandy Oakley, Burk Renner, Cathy Dafoe, and Pastor Cliff. As you may recall, our Team has been charged with the challenging task of guiding the transformation process of St. Luke of becoming a "missional church".

Mission renewal requires a paradigm shift in all of us to move away from asking the "how to's" (How will we attract more people? How will we increase giving? How will we fill the sanctuary with more people?), and begin asking instead the challenging "who?" and "what?" questions (Who is St. Luke not currently reaching in our community that God is asking us to reach? What is God calling me to do in between Sundays that makes an eternal impact for His kingdom?)

Our Team recently received the results from the Congregational Survey that was distributed in July and we will be presenting that information to Council this month. Once our Team has debriefed the Council we will schedule a date in the not-too-distant-future to share the Survey results with the Congregation.

Look for our booth at the Ministry Fair later this month. We will have an interactive "asset inventory" whiteboard set up for Members to write their gifts/talents/"assets" on a sticky note and place it on the whiteboard so that our Team can begin to "connect the dots" for new ministry opportunities to consider pursuing.

Remember, this transformation process will not succeed if do not accept the responsibility of growing in our own spiritual lives. I am reissuing the challenge to you today to commit to the hard work and discipline of spiritual growth. The 7 Marks of Ministry are an excellent starting point to direct your spiritual growth: Pray Daily. Worship Weekly. Read the Bible Daily. Serve At and Beyond St. Luke. Relate with Others to Encourage Spiritual Growth. Give to God Sacrificially of Time, Talent, and Financial Resources. Commit to Spiritual Leadership and Personal Integrity.

If you would like to learn more about how you can be an active participant of the Transformation 2.0 process at St. Luke, reach out to one of our T2 Team Members! You may also visit: www.elca.org/future

In Christ,
Paul Wright

Thanks again St. Luke Staints!

More than a Meal ...

More Than A Meal provides a hot meal and, in addition, provides the dignity of table service, fellowship, and a break from the  invisibility

Another opportunity to serve...Our next blood drive
September 2, 2018

Lifeblood is the Memphis region's only non-profit volunteer blood center, dedicated to meeting the needs of patients, healthcare facilities, medical professionals and the community at large. Every year Lifeblood supplies more than 100,000 units of blood and blood products for local patient transfusion.

The donation process only takes about 1 hour and takes place entirely at St. Luke. Each donation of whole blood can help as many as 3 recipients - all of them our neighbors.

A sign-up sheet will be located on the bulletin board outside the office. Alternatively, you can sign up and complete your health questionnaire in advance at clublifeblood.us.

Don't forget you earn points with every donation that can be redeemed at clublifeblood.us; rewards include t-shirts, movie passes, and gift cards.

Aluminum Can Ministry
For years, Jane Johnson has headed up our aluminum can ministry, crushing cans and taking them to be redeemed for cash. The most recent purchase at the

Well, Jane is turning over her crushing ministry, and it is being taken up by Larry Schroer! Thank you Larry for continuing this service to our Saints and our environment! So Saints, please continue to bring your clean, dry drink cans to the church!

Hugs and a Special Thank You from Sue Malone
To all the saints:  some say it takes a village...but I'm telling you, it takes a family of saints!  The 25 th anniversary of Pastor Cliff's ordination could not have happened without all the help and encouragement from our congregation.  I honestly have never had such a response of "what can I do?" for an event, and I've done these for almost 50 years. What could have easily been overwhelming came together so well, due to hours of planning and a carefully choreographed dance of final effort that made this wonderful event so successful and fun.  I especially want to thank Karen McCracken for her encouragement and having my back at all times. This was a shared labor of love and respect for Pastor Cliff that we all have for him, Lisa, Sophia, and Linnea. God has surely blessed us with this precious family and our heartfelt thanks go out to them for the last 16 years of faithful commitment to God and the St. Luke Saints.  A job well done, Pastor Cliff!

And a candid look at the 'goings on' at  St. Luke this past month:

Emily
Here come the brides!

We celebrated our two brides and their beaus in August with bridal showers, and we'll rejoice with Emily Summers and Sophia Bahlinger this Fall when they walk down the aisle, at St. Luke.  Congratulations to the grooms and Best Wishes to the brides!
Bahlinger Family
At the Shower

Our Alice Burns was recognized for her service in the Memphis Public Libraries and she also received the Satterfield Award for outstanding service.  She is, indeed, outstanding, as we all know and it's nice that the Memphis community knows it, too! Congratulations, Alice.

Your T-2 Transition team is still hard at work, reaching out to the community.  We had a cookout for the YMCA Folks: kids, staff, and parents, in August. It was appreciated by all - the kids were wonderful and very thankful.  You will be hearing more about plans coming up at the Ministry Fair and from Paul Wright, so check out our display in September!
The children are back at school, so please keep them, their teachers, and the school staffs in your prayers.  It's fun to reconnect with school friends, but it's also their day jobs. Lots of hugs and support are welcome.

Pastor Cliff was recognized for his 25 years of ordination. It was a fun evening, filled with laughter, best wishes, and great food.  We are so lucky to have had 16 of those years at St. Luke. The Bahlinger family is such a blessing to all of us - aren't we the lucky ones?!  Many thanks, Cliff!

Study-  The Women of Faith and the Senior High Girls Sunday school classes will join together to explore Annie Downs's Looking for Lovely  this fall (a 7 week study) .
"I want you to take every step of your life with excitement for where you are headed. And I want you to feel beautiful and confident as you do." But how? When the enemy whispers lies that we are not smart enough, pretty enough, or rich enough? Or are you too dumb, too loud, too quiet, too thin, too fat, too much or not enough? What if you don't have what it takes to be who you really want to be?" In Looking for Lovely, Annie F. Downs shares personal stories, biblical truth, and examples of how others have courageously walked the path God paved for their lives by remembering all God had done, loving what was right in front of them, and seeing God in the everyday-whether that be nature, friends, or the face they see in the mirror. Intensely personal, yet incredibly powerful, Looking for Lovely will spark transformative conversations and life changing patterns. No matter who you are and what path God has you on, we all need to remember the lovely, fight to finish, and find beautiful in our every day!

If you would like more information about this study or in mentoring the young ladies in our church, contact Jennifer Carkeet or Jennifer Wright ([email protected]). We will begin the study Aug. 19! Books will be available for purchase in class.

ELCA News

"We know that the Church of Christ in every age is beset by change, but as Spirit led, is called to test and claim its heritage."
- "Draft Social Statement on Women and Justice," paraphrasing the hymn "The Church of Christ in Every Age"

The " Draft Social Statement on Women and Justice " interweaves a confession of faith, theology, Scripture, history, science, sociology and even hymnody. The Women and Justice: One in Christ social statement task force needs your feedback in order to revise this text and then to send a proposed social statement to the ELCA Churchwide Assembly in 2019.
Because social statements speak on behalf of the ELCA as a whole church, the task force would like to hear your thoughts on the draft. Is it readable and clear? Is this what the church is being called to say about what women and girls need?
The task force will read and consider all feedback it receives through September 30. Feedback can be sent through an online or paper survey form or through letters and emails. For more information and resources, go to ELCA.org/womenandjustice .

Thank you to those who have already read the draft and responded, and thanks in advance to those who will!

God's peace,
Bishop Viviane Thomas-Breitfeld and Professor W. Bradley Wendel
Co-chairs, Women and Justice: One in Christ social statement task force

The September 30 is the deadline and it is almost here!
