Whitman Community Coming Together to Support Families following Tragedy
The Whitman community has rallied is showing support for the Fay/Smith families. This sudden, terrible loss of life has the entire town of Whitman heartbroken. Our community , while mourning the deaths of these four family members killed in the tragic accident on Tuesday evening near Orlando, Florida is coming together to grieve, remember, and support the family.

A GoFundMe titled "Fay/Smith Family Fund" has been created by Sally Volpe Godin of Weymouth with a goal of $100,000. As of Friday, the donations were already at a staggering $44,151.
Our crew here at BuzzAround send our thoughts and prayers out to the families.

Historical Tidbit:
Nor'easter

Nor'easter, a phrase that sends shivers down the spine of even the most hardiest of New Englanders. In December 1620, the Pilgrims quickly found out the nature of our winters, though many noted the first winter was milder than most to come.
A Nor'easter gets its name from strong continuous northeastern winds blowing in from the ocean. The storm begins with a strong low-pressure area either forming in the Gulf of Mexico or the East Coast. If the low tracks westerly the precipitation will mostly be rain. If the low moves easterly slightly off the coast and there's enough moisture and cold air, it's time to bundle up and batten down because we are in for heavy snow, over-sized waves and wind gusts that can exceed hurricane force. We have memories of storms such as the February "Blizzard of 78" and the Thanksgiving "Perfect Storm" of 1991. New Englanders are a hearty bunch!

Whitman Public Library is Accepting Pajama Donations
Now - March 15, 2020
The Whitman Public Library is kicking off its annual Pajama Drive for homeless children. We will be accepting new pajamas for children of all sizes (especially larger sizes). Our goal for this year"s drive is 200 pairs of pajamas, which will help keep children warm and cozy. The drive benefits the charity Cradles to Crayons, which works together with the Boston Bruins, long a supporter of libraries. The Bruins also offer prizes to participating libraries. Please help us meet our goal--the Whitman-Hanson High School Honor Society is joining with us to help make this year a success.

Huge Appreciation of our Whitman Police and
Fire Depts... Being there for Us!

At approximately 6:10 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, Whitman Police received a call from a resident reporting that her 71-year-old mother was missing from her home.

At approximately 7:30 p.m., the woman's cell phone was pinged in the area of nearby Westwood Drive. Minutes later, a sheriff's deputy, with his K-9, reported that they had located the woman in a wooded area about 250 yards from her home. The woman was unresponsive and was face down in a briar patch with her legs tangled in roots. Her clothes were muddy and wet and her skin was cold to the touch. Medical assistance was immediately called for and officers draped their coats on the woman and put a knit hat on her head until medics from the Whitman Fire Department arrived. The woman was taken out of the woods and was transported to South Shore Hospital by a Whitman Fire Department ambulance.
"This was great work by our responding officers and the Plymouth County Sheriff's K9," Chief Hanlon said. "We don't know how long she had been outside for but it was cold and rainy all day. Thankfully we found her when we did and hopefully she is going to be okay."
"Thanks to the quick response and thorough search by the Whitman Police Department and Plymouth County Sheriff's Department, we were able to arrive on the scene and administer care to the woman," said Chief Grenno. "Our medics were able to rewarm the patient, whose body temperature had dropped drastically low, and provide further care while transporting her to the hospital where additional care would be administered."
Hands-Free While Driving Law is in Effect!
Police departments are out in force to ensure residents are sticking to the rules. Here are some key points to keep in mind.

You can only use electronic devices and mobile phones in hands-free mode, you are not permitted to hold or support any electronic device/phone, you cannot touch device for texting, emailing, apps, video, or internet use, activation of GPS navigation is permitted when the device is installed or properly mounted. Any handheld use is only allowed if the vehicle is both stationary and not located in a public travel lane but is not allowed at red lights or stop signs.

A good rule of thumb is, if you can put your vehicle in park in a safe place, you can use your phone but otherwise, hands-off. If you are under 18 you cannot use ANY electronic device. All phone use while driving is illegal, including the use of hands-free mode, so talk to your teen about this one specifically. The fines and penalties will be high. Check Mass.Gov for details. Please be safe on the roads and just put the phones away as you drive your vehicle.

Equilibrium & balance:
A worthy quest for our lives... not just balance between work and family, but in meeting all of our physical and spiritual needs. To work and provide for a home & clothing, be challenged intellectually, have companions who understand and encourage us, as well as those that make us think differently; to exercise and eat nourishing food which will allow our bodies to function better and to laugh and be hugged and touched.
Meeting these needs is a necessity, allowing us to function better in all of our relationships, our families and in community.

"Democracy is the only system capable of reflecting the humanist premise of equilibrium or balance. The key to its secret is the involvement of the citizen." ~ John Ralston Saul

"Moral Education is the source of that spiritual equilibrium on which everything else depends and which may be compared to that physical equilibrium or sense of balance, without which it is impossible to stand upright or to move into any other position." ~ Maria Montessori

"The major work of the world is not done by geniuses. It is done by ordinary people, with balance in their lives, who have learned to work in an extraordinary manner."
~ Gordon B. Hinckley

"It's a helluva start, being able to recognize what makes you happy." ~ Lucille Ball
Have a wonderful week, Dear Reader. You are worthy of a balanced life. Sending hugs.
~ Jacquie
