A Word from our PFA President, Dawn Sue-Dare
First month of school in the books? Check. First PFA meeting of the year? Check. New families welcomed with an evening mixer and a morning coffee date? Check.

A HUGE shout-out and mahalo to all of our parent volunteers who helped make September such a successful month of school: Jasmine Motazedi (Room Parent Meeting), Jody Stiegemeyer (New Parent Welcome Mixer), Amelia Damborg (New Parent Welcome Coffee), Lindsay Strull (Movie Night), Bridget Katz (Treasurer's Training Meeting). Thank you all for your dedication and hard work!

Thank you to everyone who came to show support during our community fundraising days: "Back-to-School Breakfast" fundraiser at The Stand Calabasas , and our "Bay Laurel Giveback Day" at CalaKids Boutique !

Please note that we had to adjust the time for our October PFA meeting next week. It will take place on Tuesday, 10/9 at 8:30AM in the MPR. We moved the evening PFA Meeting to November 13th @ 6:00PM, please join us then! Boys & Girls Club will provide childcare for those who need it, but you *must* sign up for a spot in advance . We always welcome new ideas, and volunteers to join our various committees or become chairs for our special events!

Can't wait to see what October will bring! Go Dolphins!

Counselor's Corner with Ms. Carter
Hello Bay Laurel Families! I hope everyone has had a wonderful start to the school year. This month kicks off our character dispositions of the month; Mindfulness & Thoughtfulness. Your counseling program will also begin the Second Step Social Skills Program in our Journey and Kindergarten classes, and our Peaceful Players Program has begun. I enjoy supervising this program at Bay Laurel and appreciate the students who volunteer their time to make this program possible.

The Peaceful Players Program is an effort toward students’ learning to examine conflict and develop resolutions. Our 4 th and 5 th grade Peaceful Players are trained in activities to improve their own self-concept, leadership abilities, and improve their ability to communicate more effectively. They help students in the 1 st through 3 rd grades learn various playground games, help build a cooperative environment, encourage good sportsmanship, facilitate winning and losing with grace, and conflict resolution and problem solving.

Homework tip of the month: I absolutely love this luggage tag checklist that you can fill out with your child. It helps them become responsible for items to and from school. https://www.understood.org/en/school-learning/learning-at-home/teaching-organizational-skills/download-backpack-checklist

Parenting tip of the month:  Fighting the school blues? Check out these ways to respond to your child in an empathetic and effective way.

What your child says... “I’m too tired to go to school.”
Before you understand, you might think... He gets plenty of sleep, so he can’t be too tired to get himself to school. He just wants to stay home and play his new video game all day.
You might be tempted to say, “You slept for 10 hours. There’s no way you’re too tired for school.”
The frustration behind what your child says... School can be exhausting for kids with learning and attention issues. It takes a lot of energy to try to keep up with work when learning or attention is challenging. It can be even more tiring to try to keep pace with the expectations of adults and peers day in and day out.
A more helpful way you can respond... “I understand you’re tired. I can cancel your after school stuff today so you get a break.” Then watch him for the next few days to see if a break made a difference. If so, think about whether you need to make permanent changes to his schedule so he has more free time.

What your child says... “I hate school.”
Before you understand, you might think... He’s overreacting. You might be tempted to say, “I hate lots of things I have to do. That’s just life.”
The frustration behind what your child says... Sometimes a specific bad experience or trouble with one aspect of school can cast a cloud over everything else.
A more helpful way you can respond... “Something must be really challenging at school. I know there’s a lot that you like, so tell me what’s been happening.” Get him to be as specific as possible, then work with the school to create a plan.

What your child says... “The other kids are mean.”
Before you understand, you might think... He needs to toughen up. You might be tempted to say, “You have to stick up for yourself.”
The frustration behind what your child says... It can be tough for some kids with learning and attention issues to connect socially. And they’re  more susceptible to being bullied  than their peers. Your child may also tend to lose sight of friends he  does have if someone isn’t being nice.
A more helpful way you can respond... “I know kids can be mean sometimes. Who isn’t treating you well? What is he doing or saying?” Try to get your child to be specific and make a concrete plan to help him advocate for himself.
Thank you for stopping by Counselor’s Corner. I look forward to working with your children and invite you to contact me with any questions, concerns, or thoughts. I am on campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00am to 3:00pm and Wednesdays from 9:30am to 1:00pm.

Thank you,
Heather Carter
