Preschoolers Learn About Veterans Day

Veterans Day is the time where we honor and give thanks to those who have served or are serving in the military. In honor of Veterans Day, Preschoolers had a special visit from Christine Smith (Oliver's and Noah's mom) in her Navy dress blues. She talked to the class about her uniform and the ribbon awards that she has received. Christine also demonstrated how to fold the American flag into a triangle by using 13 folds. Read More
Preschool Family Traditions

During this holiday season, we think of family and friends getting together to celebrate traditions. The Preschool class learned that there are many traditions which can be celebrated such as annual birthday parties, vacations, and multicultural celebrations. Preschool Celebrates Thanksgiving
The Preschool class learned about the Pilgrims coming to America on the Mayflower and the Native Americans helping the Pilgrims grow crops and hunt to survive. The children dressed as Pilgrims and Native Americans as they celebrated their own Thanksgiving. Their feast included turkey, macaroni and cheese, mixed vegetables and, of course, apple pie. Each student created their own beaded necklace and exchanged it with a friend in class. Read More
Oreos Win the Election in
Pre-Kindergarten A

The Pre-Kindergarten A class had so much fun learning about Election Day. They discussed the electoral process and how it works. Sugar Cookies Win the Election in
Pre-Kindergarten B

For Election Day, Pre-Kindergarten B class voted on three treats, Oreos, sugar cookies, and cupcakes. They tasted each one and then voted on their favorite. Sugar cookies won! They had a blast learning about elections and voting in their own election.

The Pre-Kindergarten Classes Celebrate Veterans Day

The Pre-Kindergarten classes were honored to have our very own staff member, Petty Officer First Class Christine Smith, visit us in our classroom in celebration of Veterans Day. Ms. Smith joined the United States Navy Reserves in 2011. She was stationed in Washington DC and worked for 3 years at DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) as well as in Washington State in the Naval Air Station at Whidbey Island, working for Wing 10 under MTOC (Mobile Tactical Operational Command). Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Students Visit the Princeton Art Museum

After learning to look for shapes in everyday environments and honing in on their ability to visually analyze art, Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten explored the Princeton Art Museum .
Pre-Kindergarten students searched for shapes while Kindergarten students looked for animals hidden within the various artworks. Guided by well-informed docents, students learned about the different meanings behind these hidden forms and related the messages to real life.
Pre-Kindergarten Students Celebrate Thanksgiving
The Pre-Kindergarten classes enjoyed learning about the first Thanksgiving. They learned that the people of the 1600s lived very differently from the way we live today. The students learned that a cornucopia is a symbol of an abundant supply of good things. The children had a great time filling and eating their own cornucopias. Read More
Kindergarten Votes on Election Day

The Kindergarten children learned all about Election Day! The students read Duck For President . They learned that all of us have the freedom to choose who or what we like best, but only the most accumulated votes determines the winner. The candidates were Chocolate Chip cookies, Oreo cookies, and Animal cookies. Each child voted, and we tallied up the votes. Oreo cookies won!! Read More

Kindergarten's Wants and Needs

This month the Kindergarten children discussed the difference between wants and needs. As a Social Studies homework assignment, the children cut out pictures of “wants” and glued them on a 9”x12” piece of red construction paper. Then they cut out pictures of “needs” and glued them on a separate 9”x12” piece of green construction paper. Each child enthusiastically and proudly presented their assignment to their peers. Kindergarten Thanksgiving Feast

The Kindergarten children learned the true meaning of Thanksgiving. Kindergarten is thankful for their great fortune in having a loving family, friends, teachers, food, shelter, and clothing. Our Kindergarten family celebrated being thankful by reciting a Thanksgiving poem and singing a Thanksgiving song. The children played "Hot Turkey" and played "Pin the Tail on the Waddle!!!" The children had a delicious feast and continued to have a festive day with a turkey craft!!!
Elementary News
Grade 1 Votes on Election Day

On Election Day, Mrs. Parab’s and Mrs. Talbert’s first grade classes discussed the importance of the Day. They reviewed vocabulary such as casting a ballot, choosing a candidate and voting on a question, "Which cookie do you like the most, Oreo or Chocolate Chip?" They tallied the results and used the data to complete a graph. The results were: Chocolate Chip-12 and Oreo-10. The students were directed to fill in the graph and then use the graph to complete questions. It was so wonderful to see how the students worked together to help each other during this activity.
Grade 1 Visits the Elderly

First graders were excited to meet the residents at the Martin and Edith Stein Assisted Living Residence. Many of the students were recognized from their Kindergarten visit, and others were warmly welcomed for the first time. They sang a variety of autumn and Halloween songs to the residents and had great conversations with them. It was a feel-good day for all!

Grades 1 and 2 Visit
Princeton Art Museum

On November 22nd, first and second grade students enjoyed their visit to the Princeton Art Museum. The beautiful autumn day provided the perfect backdrop for an exciting and educational day in Princeton. Our tour guides gave an educational and interactive tour of the museum, explaining the different paintings and sculptures to the children. The children enjoyed the art and learned about artists such as Monet and Van Gogh. The highlight of the tour was viewing the Egyptian mummy coffin. Thank you Ms. Wisniewski for organizing this wonderful trip. Read More
Grade 2B Visits the Assisted Living Residence

Grade 2B delighted residents of The Martin and Edith Stein Assisted Living Residence by delivering a happy holiday poem and singing “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” Following their performance, the 2nd graders enthusiastically mingled with the residents, reciting original poems about the Fall season. The residents were impressed, not only with the children’s poems but also with their presentation skills. The children were quite happy to share their time with the residents.
Grades 2 Celebrates Thanksgiving

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, second graders took some time out of their busy school day to consider what they're thankful for. Each child chose an adjective and noun to make a personalized link in order to create a Gratitude Chain. What are the second graders thankful for? Loving families, safe homes, school, friends and tasty food!  
Grade 2 Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) Program

Second grade kicked off the month of November with our D.E.A.R. reading program. The children take time to read books with family members and visitors who come to join us in the classroom. This quiet reading time builds reading skills such as stamina and fluency. It is exciting to see how much the children look forward to the program and visitors each month!
Grades 2 Visits Norz Hill Farm
Despite the drizzle, second graders excitedly boarded their bus and traveled to Norz Hill Farm in Hillsborough. Enjoying a hayride and private tour of the working farm, the children learned about a variety of animals, from chickens and peacocks to pigs and goats. With delight, they petted and fed many of the animals. The tour continued up to the pumpkin patch where each child searched for and selected the perfect pumpkin! Grade 3 Students Vote on Election Day

On Tuesday, November 5th, the third graders participated in a class election. They voted on their favorite candy! The choices were Skittles, Hershey Bars or Dum Dums. The results were shared with students, and the winning candy was brought in for all to take home! Students went through the entire process of filling out a voter registration card, privately filling out a ballot,and even getting an "I Voted" sticker at the end! Great job third graders! Read More
Grade 3 Celebrates Veterans Day

On Thursday, November 7th, Christine Smith, our admissions and public relations coordinator, came in her Navy blues to show the third graders how to properly fold a flag. We also learned about her uniform and why we celebrate Veterans Day. Thank you Ms. Smith!


Grades 3 Welcomes Mystery Reader

Third Grade welcomed another mystery reader to their classrooms. Mrs. Nivedita Bal, Vihaan's mom, surprised the third graders as a mystery reader. She gave us tough clues making it difficult for students to guess her identity. She read a short story The Enormous Crocodile by one of Vihaan’s favorite authors Roald Dahl.
Older Sister is the Mystery Reader for Grade 3

Siri, Ayven’s older sister, was the mystery reader on Friday November 15th! She read Anansi and the Moss Covered Rock . The book is about a spider who discovered a rock with special powers while walking through the forest. He then used it to trick a mouse, an elephant, a giraffe, and a zebra. However, Little Bush Deer could not be fooled and used the rock to teach Anansi a lesson. Read More
Grade 3 Students Visit Assisted Living

Third graders had a great time visiting the assisted living facility. They sang a few songs and entertained the elderly people. Some of the residents even joined them since they knew some of the songs. The students also read a few books to the residents and were praised for their fluency in reading and the confident manner in which they conducted themselves. Great job third grade!
Grade 3 D.E.A.R. Program

On Thursday, November 14th, 3rd graders participated in our second day of DEAR, Drop Everything And Read. The program encourages everyone to stop what they are doing and pick up a book! Parents joined us for lunch and silent reading. The students and parents look forward to this event every month! Great job everyone!

Grades 3 Students Celebrate Thanksgiving
Third grade celebrated Thanksgiving by making pilgrim hats and decorating fall leaves. As they made their hats and decorated the leaves, they discussed what they were thankful for in their lives.
Grades 3 Wins the Scholastic
Writing Contest

Vihaan participated in a Scholastic writing contest which was open to all students in the U.S attending grades 2 through 4. The challenge was to create the first chapter of an original ‘My Weird School’ type of story with a 2-page limit. He emerged a winner and received a 40 set collection of Weird School books. Read More
Grade 3 and 4 House Competition

On Thursday, November 21, third and fourth-grade students participated in a house competition! They completed three relay races where they needed to run with shoeboxes on their feet, shoe boxes in their hands (a balance challenge!) and dribbling a basketball around a cone. All houses were awarded 15 points for participation. The children had a blast!

Grades 3 and 4 Visit the Princeton Art Museum
On November 22nd, 3rd and 4th grade students took a field trip to the Princeton Art Museum. 3rd grade students ventured down all wings of the museum searching for hidden myths and legends in the artwork while 4th grade students searched for different types of portraiture. Both grades dove into the culture and time periods of the different artwork, learning that each culture and time period provided a different way of telling a story through art. Having the opportunity to visit this museum provided another way for students to visually analyze artwork and relate it to real life. Read More
Grade 4’S Experience With Early Lenape Culture
Grade 4 traveled to Huber Woods in Middletown to build a longhouse as the early Lenape did.The early Lenape did not have a written language. Using petroglyphs and pictographs, the early Lenape were able to carve in rock and paint with natural dyes to tell some of their stories.Grade 4 students created pictograph stories by mixing dirt and water to make paint. They painted their stories on brown papers as the Lenape would on animal skins or bark. While the “bark” dried, the students used precut logs and rope to build their longhouse. They learned to tie the ropes using the early techniques of frapping and wrapping. Then they covered the sides and roof of their longhouse with the “bark” they designed. After a couple of hours, the students were finally able to sit inside their longhouse! Read More

Coupled with lunch and a good book, the students settled in for a relaxing time of reading and munching. Parents are always welcome to join in the fun!

Grades 5 and 6 Music Field Trip!
On Friday, November 15th, Grades 5 and 6 went to see a performance of “Nobuntu” at Raritan Valley Community College. The word Nobuntu is an African concept that values humbleness, love, unity, and family from a woman's perspective. The ensemble represents a new generation of young African women singers who celebrate and preserve their culture, beauty, and heritage through art.
Grade 6 Book Study on Gold Star Father Khizer Khan
Khan is an immigrant from Pakistan and his son Humayan was an officer in the army. Humayan was killed in action in Afghanistan
while protecting his troops. His book, This Is Our Constitution; What It Is and Why It Matters, is a highly personal account of his passion for the constitution and our nation's founding documents. Working in book circles, students answer questions related to assigned readings and take turns as discussion leaders while using the Socratic method to lead a group discussion. This book is a nice compliment to our ongoing study of the Constitution and the articles of impeachment. The students are engaged in very lively discussions of the book and are thoroughly enjoying this ongoing project. Read More
Grades 5 and 6 El Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) 2019
As part of their Spanish cultural project, grades 5 and 6 Spanish language students worked on Day of the Dead projects this year. El Día de Los Muertos is a special Latin American holiday that takes place November 1-2. The emphasis of this project is placed on the study and appreciation of famous Hispanics and the cultural significance and traditions associated with the Day of the Dead holiday. Grade 5 students were introduced to the history, traditions and symbols of this holiday by watching  El Día de los Muertos video. They compared the Day of the Dead to similar holidays around the world and created their own colorful “calaveras” (skulls). As Grade 6 students worked in pairs, each student's task was to prepare an authentic Mexican dish, create artwork, research a famous Hispanic or construct/decorate an “ofrenda” (altar).   Read More
Grades 7 El Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) 2019
Grade 7 Spanish language students completed a Day of the Dead WebQuest project. As part of their Spanish cultural project, each student created their own Google slide ofrendas. El Día de Los Muertos is a special Latin American holiday that takes place November 1-2.  The emphasis of this project is placed on the study of famous Hispanics, the cultural significance, and traditions associated with the Day of the Dead holiday. 
Fall Play

On November 21st and 22nd, the students of the CHP Drama Club took the stage for a night of world premiere theatre!  A Night of Magic and Mystery  featured 3 original one acts developed by the Drama Club students. The students performed their roles excellently and were able to bring their own stories to a very enthusiastic audience. Thank you to all who joined us for this hilarious and magical production. Book Fair

CHP had another successful Book Fair! We sold $3770.13 and raised $1885.06 in Scholastic Dollars to be used to purchase books and supplies for our classrooms. In addition, The All fo r Books Coin Donations totaled $423.50, which was used to purchase books for classroom libraries. 
Thank you all for supporting our Book Fair and fostering a climate of reading within our community. A special thank you to all the volunteers who gave of their time in setting up, selling, and closing the Book Fair. Our last event, the raffle, took place on Wednesday, November 20th. The gym was full of excitement as the names of the winners were called to receive their prizes... either a book or poster of their choice. Great fun was had by all!

Pep Rally to Start the Season
On Wednesday, November 20, Cedar Hill Prep held a Pep Rally to kick off the start to our Boys and Girls Middle School Sports Basketball Season! Both teams played their first game at Wilberforce in Princeton. Led by our 8th Graders, our teams have been working very hard and are excited to start the season! Go Wildcats! Read More
