CLUB RUSH
On Tuesday and Wednesday this past week, our 125 chartered clubs set up in the amphitheater at lunch to advertise their clubs and seek new members during Club Rush. A big thank you to Tyler Kawana and Kelly Beaupre, our two ASB Club Commissioners, who oversaw Club Rush and the chartering of all the clubs. They've spent many hours meeting with all club presidents to learn about their club's purposes and goals. A list of our 2018-19 chartered clubs is HERE.

CLASS COMP
ASB organized a class competition this past Thursday at lunch. The game was Kagabi and it was fantastic! Representatives from each grade formed a circle around several trash cans. The students were connected to each other by holding the ends of short lengths of rope. The contestants moved around the trash cans trying to pull one of the others into a trash can without hitting it themselves. If anyone bumped into a trash can or dropped their end of a rope, they were out. Congratulations to the champions - the junior girls and the senior boys!

The winners sign their names to the perpetual trophy - The Golden Trash Can

REACHING OUT TO YOUNGSTERS IN OUR DISTRICT
At last Friday's home football game, band students from the District's intermediate schools played alongside our Marching Band. At halftime, we were all entertained by members of the Junior Spirit Corp - a group of PV District students in grades K through 8 - who worked with the PVPHS Cheer and Song Teams this past week to learn cheers and routines which they performed for us at the game.

DRAMA PLAY - GIRLS LIKE THAT
This week our Drama students will be staging Girls Like That - Evan Placey's urgent and explosive play that explores the pressures on young people today in the wake of advancing technology. This play tackles the important subject of how teens are to cope in a world of digital immediacy, where everything is public and permanent. Our students performed this important new work at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this past summer - and it was very well received.

Performances:
This Friday, October 12  at 3:30pm and 7pm
and Saturday, October 13 at 7pm

SKECHERS WALK
Its back!! Attention Panthers, the annual Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk will take place on Sunday morning, October 28. Last year as a school we had almost 500 walkers register, which greatly contributed to the PEF receiving a check for $240,000!

Click HERE to go to the PVPHS Panther Team sign up page and click "JOIN TEAM" in the top right corner. Remember you can register yourself along with your family members and pets (yes we will accept gold fish)! Every tax deductible $30 donation to the Skechers Walk brings PEF approximately $60 in return! If you can't make it this year, you can register as a "virtual walker" and PEF still gets credit for your participation.

Donations to the Skechers Walk directly supports our PEF which helps to fund the Peninsula High SMERT program, College and Career Center, Academic Counselors, Teacher Grants, and so much more!

DOC'S CORNER
The following is another in a series of  weekly columns from guest writer, Dr. Moe Gelbart, Executive Director of the Thelma McMillen Center.

PARENTAL STRATEGIES FOR HELPING TEENS IN TODAY'S PRESSURE COOKER: PART III - TEACHING DELAYED GRATIFICATION
There was a landmark study, begun in the late 1960's by Psychologist Walter Mischel of Stanford University, known as the Marshmallow Test. He offered small children a choice to have a marshmallow right away, or if they waited until he returned, they could have two marshmallows. The researchers then observed the children regularly for the next 50 years, and found amazing information. Those who were able to delay gratification, i.e. those who waited to get the two marshmallows, had, as adults, lower rates of addiction, higher SAT scores, lower divorce rates, and lower BMI (Body Mass Index, a measure of obesity). It is scientific proof that the ability to delay gratification is one of the elementary foundations for success in life.

Delayed gratification is the ability to work for something in the present, with the payoff being somewhere in the future. We certainly see that in the education system, where children need to learn things now, for a later payoff. Interestingly, the use of drugs or alcohol is the opposite of delayed gratification, with substances providing instant gratification. The feeling one seeks is always achieved within minutes of ingesting a substance. People who develop a problem with drugs or alcohol are often seeking instant gratification in much of what they take on. What they lose control of are the unintended consequences of their action. If we accept that being able to delay gratification, that is work hard now for a payoff later, is a building block of success, then it is important to recognize that the ability to delay gratification can be taught, and is not necessarily a skill one is born with.

As a parent, you can teach your child to delay gratification in several ways. Most important, I believe, is to instill a sense of value and work, which can begin to be taught at a young age. Parents should be mindful of not giving all material things a child desires, and teaching them to make choices. It is important for children to earn things they want, and not receive all things on demand. Token type economies with credit earned for their activities make them value things more, and teach them that hard work now may pay off later. If a child leaves a bicycle outside and it is ruined or taken, then quickly replacing it may teach them the wrong lesson. Assisting them with saving and earning will teach them the value of things, and develop the ability to delay gratification. The opposite, a sense of entitlement, often leads to significant problems.

The ability to delay gratification is critical for success, related to self worth and self esteem, and can be nurtured and taught. Those who feel entitled, and seek instant gratification, may be setting themselves up for years of difficulty.
