Get to Know Our New Teachers

Tegan Brophy
Yoga has been an integral part of Tegan's life since her introduction to Iyengar yoga in her late teens where she discovered the life-balancing and grounding value of regular practice. For the past 30 years she has practiced and studied with a variety of senior teachers from around the world, beginning her teaching career in 2008 in South Africa. She is certified at the Junior Intermediate 1 Level.  Tegan directed her own yoga-wellness studio in Windhoek, Namibia, before relocating to Canada in 2009. She has lived and taught in Whitehorse and Nanaimo and is now settling in Kelowna, thrilled to be part of this vibrant, welcoming yoga community in the beautiful, sunny Okanagan. Tegan has a keen interest in integrated dynamic health, somatic transformation and the evolution of consciousness. She is delighted by adventure and is an enthusiastic explorer of the outer and inner worlds remaining forever a student of life. Her teaching offers practical guidance in self exploration through the many depths and benefits of yoga, inviting discovery, vitality, and the transformation of challenge into possibility. Professionally, Tegan is a Practitioner in Medical Heilkunst and Homeopathy; an accredited Quantum Bio-Feedback Therapist, Integral Master Coach and Somatic Coach specialising in Sequential time-line therapy, Life transition and Trauma integration. "Unless freedom is gained in the body, freedom of the mind is a far-fetched idea." BKS Iyengar

Lauri Morel
Lauri's first yoga class was at the Kelowna Yoga House, with her then teenage daughter, 15 years ago. Little did she know then that she would embark on the long, winding road toward becoming a certified Iyengar yoga teacher. Along the path she went to Pune in 2009 with a few other KYH students and teachers to study with the Iyengar family at RIMYI. Also on the way, she completed a 200-hour Yoga Alliance teacher training in Vinyasa Yoga in 2013-14. After dabbling in other styles of yoga practice, and continuing to practice at KYH, attending workshops regularly with Iyengar teachers, she came to the realization that, for her, the Iyengar method of practicing yoga, made her body and mind feel the most connected and balanced. Being a Registered Nurse for the past 27 years has also contributed to Lauri's appreciation of Iyengar yoga as a safe, healthy, and accessible to all method of yoga practice. Lauri is going into her third year of teacher training toward certification at the Introductory II level. When not at work, or practicing yoga in class or at home, you can find her out hiking somewhere and most likely striking a yoga pose or two for a little spontaneity and fun.

Janice Loukras
Janice began her exploration of yoga in 1998 seeking relief from the physical effects of a desk job and childbirth. The practice brought both physical and mental benefits. Upon moving to Kelowna in 2003, Janice discovered the Kelowna Yoga House and Iyengar yoga and has been a student ever since. Her first workshop experience was at the 2008 Iyengar Yoga Association of Canada's Annual General Meeting in Penticton where she had the privilege of learning from Geeta Iyengar, and from there was inspired to learn more. In 2016, Janice chose to take her practice and learning deeper by entering the Iyengar Yoga Teacher Training program and is currently in her third year of teacher training toward certification at the Introductory II level. In addition to teacher training and regular classes at KYH, Janice also studies with national and international Senior Iyengar Yoga Teachers.

Digging Deeper into the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali
by Melissa Perehudoff

I've returned from my fourth trip to Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, India where I studied and practiced Iyengar yoga for one month. Attending RIMYI is a true pilgrimage filled with many wonders, challenges and insights. Digging deeper into my physical yoga practice helped to unearth some greater understanding of yoga philosophy. These are my humble attempts to personalize my limited understandings on the subject of the vrttis.

Yoga is defined as citta vrtti nirodhaha or the cessation of movements in the consciousness [1]. BKS Iyengar states that a quiet and pure consciousness is divine and at one with the soul [2]. Investigating further into the yoga sutras we discover that there are five types of fluctuations or vrttis that can cause our consciousness to be unstable. The five vrttis are correct knowledge, false knowledge, imagination, sleep and memory [3]. The vrttis are classified into five groups for simplicity and ease of understanding. All five can affect you at one time in varying degrees [4]. They can be painful (klista) or non-painful (aklista). The painful vrttis can cause our downfall and non-painful or pure vrttis result in upliftment [5].

A Note From Krisna

Dear students of Yoga,
Surprise! I am taking a sabbatical from October 19 until February 28. I am excited to have this opportunity to deepen my practices and studies through the winter months which are naturally a time to go inward. I am exceedingly grateful (and I know you will be too) that the KYH teachers have rallied to cover my regular classes during this time.
Wishing you a bountiful and inspired winter of practice!

In the light of Yoga,
Krisna

The Focus on Practice series will continue! You can still have class with Krisna October 26 and November 24.
December 15, she will be leading 100 poses in 100 minutes to celebrate BKS Iyengar's centenary.

We are in need of yogis who would like to help out KYH and benefit from an arrangement of work exchange (Cleaning) for yoga classes.
