From the ICF-NJ President

Hello ICF-NJ Community!

I hope you are well --

September has been a very exciting month for ICF-NJ!

Achieving the milestone of 20 years as a chapter of ICF is an outstanding accomplishment! ICF-NJ's celebration of 20 years as a Chapter was a huge success! Thanks to everyone who played a part in this special evening. An important thank you to the planning group - Brooke Manino, Marc Strano, Susan Gilell Stuy, and Supriya Desai - you all did a yeoman's job over the last several months putting this event together!

As we look to the next 20 years of ICF-NJ, we look to our expanded community, as it's through you that we will thrive, learn, and grow as an organization!

What does it take to get to 20 years of success? Members like you. We are thrilled to welcome 48 new Chapter members to ICF-NJ this year alone. We look forward to seeing many of you at one of our in-person events, a webinar, or perhaps a community group meeting. Thank you for selecting NJ as your Chapter! Please reach out to any of the Board members with questions or suggestions you have, or if you would like to get personally involved in the chapter in some way; we would love to have your support!

Congratulations to our 24 new credential holders this year. That is quite an achievement. Very nicely done!

It's time to elect our 2019 ICF-NJ Chapter Board. Please see further information about openings we have and how to show your interest in the article below.

It's the effort of many hands and hearts that makes our Chapter work so well. Your presence at Chapter events and your interest in each other inspires us to be our best and try new things!

That's all for now.

Take good care,

Andrea Harvey, PCC
2018 ICF-NJ President

Oh, What a Night!
by Brooke Manino

Months ago when we decided to hold an event to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of ICF New Jersey, I don't think anyone could have predicted what a special evening it would turn out to be.

Gathered together were members of our Chapter ranging from founding members to members as new as just a few short weeks, including honorary lifetime member, Laura Berman Fortgang. Laura, in her entertaining style, led a rich and lively discussion on the evolution of coaching with some key reminders to all of us:
  • Be good at what you do
  • Hold on to your 'truth' in your coaching - that essence which is your personal passion
  • Embrace reinventing yourself and your coaching practice
The evening fostered the opportunity for stories to be shared, names to be joined with faces, and long-time partnerships to be rekindled. The energy and excitement was remarkable. All of ICF New Jersey's Past Presidents were honored during the evening with 13 of them present for the celebration. We also celebrated ICF New Jersey members who are celebrating 5, 10, 15, and 20 year milestones with the Chapter. It is amazing to think that we had hundreds of years of coaching experience all in one room.

Thanks to the ICF New Jersey 2018 Board and the planning committee for organizing this memorable evening. Thanks to all those who attended and joined in the festivities.

Here's to the next 20 years! #20More

BoardElection

ICF-NJ has had a banner year - great programs, an International Coaching Week partnership with the Girl Scouts, our 20 th Anniversary Celebration, a new virtual community group, and lots more. We are a vibrant organization here to serve all of our members. We need your help to build the future! As JFK said, "Ask not what ICF-NJ can do for you - ask what you can do for ICF-NJ." Well, he didn't quite say that, but nevertheless, we DO need your help to continue to thrive.

ICF-NJ will be holding Board elections soon, and we have a number of open positions that we need to fill. You must be an ICF-NJ member to be on the board, and certain roles require a minimum of an ACC credential. Here are the upcoming Board openings for next year:
  • President (credentialed member)
  • President Elect/VP (credentialed member)
  • Treasurer (credentialed member)
  • Communications Director (member)
  • Technology Director (member)
  • Membership Director (member)
If you have any interest/talent/gumption/volunteer spirit to put your  name in the hat for any of the above positions, please let us know. We would LOVE to have you on board. Or should I say, 'On the Board'!

We are also looking for people to join committees in these areas:
  • Education and Professional Development
  • Strategic Partnerships
  • Operations
  • Special Projects (International Coaching week, other)
  • Community Groups
Whether you can give an hour of your time, or hours per month, all are invited to help! Again, let us know your interest and availability. Speaking as a fairly new board member myself, I have had the pleasure to work with an amazing group of people, and feel good to not just coach about leadership, but to lead in this way. Hope you will consider being active in building our future as well.

Please forward any questions or interest you have to director@icf-nj.org.

All the best, always

Leveraging the Dynamics of Support and Challenge
for High Performance
A Coaching Demonstration focused on Facing the FACTS

This coaching demonstration invites participants to challenge some of the sacrosanct philosophies and teachings of multiple professional coach education and training organizations regarding the non-directive principle, holding the client's agenda and the role of rapport.

Attendees will calibrate themselves as coach practitioners along the 'support-challenge continuum', followed by a live coaching demonstration aimed at addressing the dynamic tension between challenge and support using an organizational coaching model (FACTS).

We hope you will join us to learn about another approach for supporting your clients to stretch and challenge themselves.

Core competencies demonstrated include: Establishing Trust and Intimacy, Coaching Presence, Active Listening, Powerful Questioning, Direct Communication, Creating Awareness

CCEUs:
1.5 Core Competencies CCEUs pending by the ICF

Virtual
ICF-NJ Community Groups

In addition to our wonderful programming, we have four community groups that  are an informal way to network, continue your development as a coach, and address challenges you may have. You do not need to be an ICF-NJ member yet to participate, but we hope to have you join as a member soon.

We have in-person groups in the Princeton area, in Monmouth County, and in the Somerset/Morris/Essex area. We also have a virtual group which is targeted to those people who do not currently live near an in-person group, although all are welcome to join. You can participate in as many community groups as you'd like.

To get specific information on dates/times for the community groups   (and call-in information for the virtual one) , please go to this link:

What ICF-NJ Means to Me

Four years ago I made a decision that would not only change my life, but unbeknownst to me at the time, the lives of so many others. I initially obtained my coaching credential to complement my consulting business. At the time I had no idea of the impact this would have on my life personally and on the lives of those who I serve. The rigorous coaching certification program was a journey in itself and afforded me the opportunity to connect with my passion to cultivate purpose in my life and business. In time I learned that coaching is less about the process but more about putting it to work for others, enabling people to get out of their head and into their heart, where things matter. It is there that they find the motivation to produce meaningful change which leads to sustainable growth.

As a life-long educator, being part of someone else's growth has always fascinated me. The insights I gained during my certification process are priceless, as is the power of the coaching outcome, which I was unaware of as a consultant. I encourage people I coach to be selfish when it comes to their own growth. Those who are, grow in ways they never imagined, as they immerse in the coaching experience and relentlessly challenge themselves to gain insights that lead to action. Once the spark is ignited there is no stopping the momentum. Pulitzer Prize Winner Maya Angelou once said "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but no one will ever forget how you made them feel."

Although my accomplishment in completing my ICF certification program was exciting, it was unmatched by the feeling I had as I received my ACC accreditation and became an ICF member. That feeling of being part of an internationally recognized discipline guided by a code of ethics spoke to my heart. To think of the hope we can ignite in others' lives and businesses as a worldwide movement of coaches gives me chills! Together we can and already are making a difference in the lives of so many others as we help them connect with the innate potential that has been there all along waiting to be discovered and unleashed. My part as a coach is insignificant compared to the courage and commitment my clients exhibit in their thirst for personal growth.

ICF-NJ has afforded me the opportunity to meet others locally to hone and support my own personal growth as a coach. More importantly, it has given me the opportunity to continue to support other coaches on their journey as we connect with one another. I have always found that connecting with the intent of contributing first paves the way for opportunity. Stepping in to assume a leadership role as the Group Leader for the ICF-NJ Somerset/Morris/Essex Community Group has been a gift. These groups provide the opportunity to network with other coaches, or aspiring coaches, to learn, support and challenge one another to be the best we can be for those we serve. I can't think of a more humbling profession or better organization than we have right here in New Jersey.

I am ever grateful to be involved in a profession that is only limited by the number of lives we can touch.
