ADVICE FROM THE EXPERTS
Dr. Adam Hollinger, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering
What advice do you have for new students who are trying to decide between majors?
When deciding between majors, make sure to talk to faculty members in each of the disciplines you are interested in pursuing. We are happy to answer specific questions about our discipline and to give you examples of career paths you could pursue with your degree. I also recommend that you speak with the career counselors in the Academic and Career Planning Center. They can provide you with a wide range of resources pertaining to all of the majors that are offered at Penn State. Lastly, do not make your decision based upon projected salaries for various majors. While that can be a consideration, it is most important that you are truly interested in the discipline and the opportunities that your degree can provide.
MAJOR OF THE MONTH - PROJECT AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT (PSCM), B.S.
WHAT IS PSCM?

It has been estimated that well over half of all activities in modern corporations are project-based. From developing a new product to constructing a new building, the list of efforts that organizations must plan, manage, and deliver (ideally on time and under budget) is nearly endless. At the same time, globalization creates a growing need for professionals who can effectively manage complex supply chains. The study of project and supply chain management emphasizes the integration of manufacturing and service operations, logistics, purchasing, and distribution—the functions that enable organizations to cultivate value-creating supply chain networks.
YOU MIGHT LIKE THIS PROGRAM IF . . .

  • You’re not intimidated by large projects, or ones that have many moving parts.
  • You are detail oriented.
  • You are looking for a versatile, in-demand business degree.
  • You are interested in pursuing a concurrent certificate in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) with SAP (available at Erie, the Behrend College and University College campuses, Beaver, Fayette, Greater Allegheny, Lehigh Valley, New Kensington, Schuylkill, Shenango, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton).
WHAT CAN I DO WITH THIS MAJOR?

The B.S. in Project and Supply Chain Management is one of only a handful of undergradu ate degree programs in this field. Graduates are uniquely prepared to work in project-intensive industries such as construction, insurance, information services and information technology, manufacturing, utilities, pharmaceuticals, third-party logistics, and goods and services distribution operations.

Employers of recent B.S. in Project and Supply Chain Management graduates include BPMI, Business Resource Group, Erie Insurance, Fairpoint Communications, Ferguson Enterprises, Frito Lay, General Electric, IBM, Modern Industries, Pitney Bowes, PPG Industries, Spyne, Tyco Electronics, and Webtec Railway Electronics.
