Annual Performance Report
2019 MAP/EOC results 

Hallsville School District’s commitment to preparing all students for success has been affirmed by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Annual Performance Report (APR). Earning Target status--the highest level possible--in College and Career Readiness, Attendance Rate, and Graduation Rate in 2019 highlights the efforts made and progress achieved by our students, teachers, and staff. In addition to earning Target status on three future-ready standards of the APR, Hallsville School District students performed above the state average on both Academic Achievement and Subgroup Achievement as based on Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) scores.

“Our mission to guarantee all students will reach their potential is demonstrated again in this year’s results. We continually prepare our students for life after high school and the path they choose. While we are proud of the gains we have achieved in our APR, there are always areas for continued effort and growth,” states superintendent John Downs. “One area for continued focus is closing our subgroup achievement gaps in English language arts and mathematics. Our administration, teacher-leaders, and faculty teams have developed and implemented action plans for curricular and instructional changes to address vertical alignment and subgroup achievement.”  
In addition to monitoring results provided within the APR, Hallsville’s strategic plan looks beyond standardized test scores to evaluate our students’ overall growth and performance. Other goals include maximizing student engagement and supporting a positive learning environment. “Both the Board of Education and district are focused on students fully participating in their own education, and we offer a variety of enrichment, behavioral, and academic supports to meet individual student needs,” Downs states. “We continually strive to provide a safe environment where students can focus on learning, as well as establish a school climate built on positive relationships between students and staff. These efforts help to ensure students find success in school and beyond.”

MU’s First Impact
Preparing new drivers
for the road

On Monday, October 28, we invite all parents and teen drivers to participate in The University of Missouri’s School of Medicine “First Impact” event from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. in the Intermediate Commons.  

First Impact is an evidence-based traffic safety program that educates parents about Missouri’s Graduated Driver License (GDL) law. The goal of First Impact is to reduce the number of motor vehicle fatalities, injuries and crashes among teen drivers by increasing parental awareness and enforcement of GDL law. The event is open to all parents and students, however, it is tailored to teens ages 14-19 years of age.  You can register for the program here .  
Hallsville Veterans Day Assembly
Calling all Veterans

The Hallsville School District would like to invite all veterans to our Veterans Day Program on Monday, November 11. Breakfast will be provided for our veterans and their guests at Hallsville Primary School starting at 8:00 a.m., followed by a short program performed by the primary students. At 9:00 a.m., we will transport our veterans and guests to the Hallsville High School West Gym located on the main campus. Our intermediate, middle, and high school students will honor our veterans with a program starting at 9:30 a.m. Please pass along information about this special day to any veteran you may know. We hope to see you at the Veterans Day program on Monday, November 11.
National Bus Safety Week
Thank you to our bus drivers! 

The third full week in October is National School Bus Safety Week. Our district currently has 17 bus drivers that will drive over 119,000 miles this year for their regular routes alone. This week, drivers from Hallsville, Fulton, Mexico, North Callaway, and Harrisburg schools gathered to practice two bus evacuation drills and discuss safety protocol for bus fires. In addition to this safety training, they meet monthly to review other safety topics such as driving in inclement weather, student management, responding to medical issues, and bus stop safety. Thank you to all of our drivers who ensure our 920 student riders arrive at school and home safely each day!
Board of Education
October Highlights

The Board of Education met for their regular session meeting on Monday, October 21. Items discussed and reviewed included the evaluation of the Instructional Effectiveness program, facility needs, four day school week, and a utility line easement. Bond Construction Updates
#BuildingOurTribe

The October 2019 report presented to the board outlined updates on the construction progress for the gymnasium and second-grade classroom wing. Progress has been made with the gymnasium and classroom concrete slabs, and soon masonry walls and steel erections for the additions will be added. SM Wilson is also working on critical long-lead items and prioritizing material procurement so we can meet the schedule constraints on the project.

Board action was requested on the following change orders: 1) removal of concrete from the existing footings at the location of the additions, (2) changes to power requirements for the gymnasium HVAC, (3) relocating radiant panels in the locker rooms, and (4) replacement of the existing sanitary sewer line to service the new second grade wing. Change orders would be funded from the district's contingency. Details are included in the monthly update document.

Educator, Citizen, & Business of the Year

The Hallsville Area Chamber of Commerce is again seeking nominations for the 2019 Educator of the Year. If you are interested in nominating a teacher from our District who displays dedication, motivation, enthusiasm, and commitment, please see the form posted on Peachjar.

Be Involved!
Hallsville Youth Opportunities & Events

The Hallsville Youth Basketball Association (HYBA) is a non-school sponsored organization for 3rd and 4th grade boys and girls. Our objective is to have enough participation for one or more boy(s) and girl(s) teams in each grade.
 
Practice will begin in October with at least 6 weeks of skills development followed by games in January and February against teams of equal grades from other communities. 

Registration will once again be held on Sunday, October 27 in the North Gym from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm. Coaches will run drills and have controlled scrimmages for the kids both days. The HYBA will have a parent meeting on October 27, 2019 after the open gym time in the North Gym. Registration and an Open House are now scheduled for the Hallsville Kids Club Youth Wrestling! This program is open to students 9 years and older, or with coach approval based on previous experience. An open house and registration event is scheduled for Sunday, November 3 from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. This is a great way for students to become involved and make a smooth transition to the new HMS Wrestling team in 7th grade. 

The Hallsville Intermediate Talent Show for grades 2-5 is scheduled for Tuesday, November 26 at 9:00 a.m. Auditions will be held on Thursday, November 14 during each grade level’s regular specials time. We encourage all our intermediate students to try out for emcee, or an individual or group act.  

All Boone county middle and high school students can enter the “Look Around Boone: 2nd Annual Creative Contest” by creating visual and performing arts educating students about mental health.  Look Around Boone is a community collaborative working to reduce mental health stigma while encouraging Boone County youth, adults and families to address social, emotional and behavioral concerns by accessing supportive services.

The Hallsville Park Board presents the 4th Annual Trick or Treat in the Park on Saturday, October 26th. The event kicks off at 4:30 p.m., with a costume contest at 5:00 p.m. A new event for the year is a pre-carved pumpkin contest! Come and enjoy the fun games, cake walk, hot dogs, and more! 

Prescription Drug Take Back
The Boone County Sheriff's Department, in partnership with the Youth Community Coalition and other agencies, are conducting a Prescription Drug Take Back event on October 25 and 26. The Hallsville Police Department will have a collection site on Saturday, October 26 from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. For additional locations and days, please click here .   

Join the HHS National Honor Society and the American Red Cross for their annual Blood Drive on Friday, November 1 from 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. They will be set-up in the Hallsville Intermediate Commons. You can also schedule a time to give that day here .  

Join the local chapter of Beta Sigma Phi as they host “Pretty in Pearls” a mother and daughter tea party on Saturday, November 23rd. The tea party, open to girls ages 4-12, begins at 10:00 a.m. at Red Top Church. All proceeds will go towards adopting local families in need during the holiday season.  

You can visit the Bookmobile on the 2nd & 4th Tuesday of each month at City Hall from 1:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. For new families to our district, you can also reserve and pick-up books from the Locker’s To-Go located at Prengers.  

The Hallsville Food Pantry takes place the fourth Tuesday of each month from 4:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. at the Hallsville Baptist Church. Food is provided at no cost for families in need. Please see the above link for what to bring. Dates for each month are also posted on the district’s calendar which can be found online here or on the app!
