Rector's Reflections

I've always loved a good story. I love immersing myself in the setting, the narrative, the build-up, the climax, the ending, the left-hanging. I love all of what goes into making a story a "good" story. I find myself unable to put a good story down when I feel like I have a place in the story or can picture an application to my life.

God's story is like that. I love how we are all part of God's story of love, grace, liberation and life-changing truth.
In her book, Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again author Rachel Held Evans writes:

"Jesus invites us into a story that is bigger than ourselves, bigger than our culture, bigger even than our imaginations, and yet we get to tell that story with the scandalous particularity of our particular moment and place in time. We are storytelling creatures because we are fashioned in the image of a storytelling God. May we never neglect the gift of that. May we never lose our love for telling the tale."

God's great story of salvation is one we are invited into every time we gather for worship, every time we hear sacred stories from the pages of our history as God's people, each time we hear this saving story told in song and prayer, each time we gather around bread and wine and hear those saving words once more, each time we draw close to the waters of baptism and hear of God's cleansing water stories, and each time we are drawn into this transforming narrative.

We have been hearing stories from many All Sainters this summer through ministry moments during worship. A special thank you to Betty Brown, Clint Brown, Peter Walker, Mary Bertsch, Jay Wyman, Lee White, Joyce Lake, Steve Day, Phoebe VanScoy Giessler, Vicky Vivian, Paul Dostie, Christy Parker, and Jack Ferguson who have shared their stories (and Candace Tordonato and Felicity Freund who will on Sunday)! Their weaving of their stories of relationship with God and this faith community have been informative and inspirational.

Each of you has an opportunity to reflect and commit how you will connect and share your story and the gifts God has blessed you with to help shape and tell our shared story of ministry for the coming year. Story forms were mailed and are available in the narthex lobby and we ask that you return them through the offering during worship or return to the church office by September 1st. Thank you!

In the Peace of Jesus,

Thank you "Holy Rollers" Peter and Susie Walker who are painting the new door in the office wing today. The door will match the other two main building entrances in traditional Episcopal Church Red. Thanks to all who help maintain and improve the buildings and grounds of All Saints.

Wicked Fit Run
All Saints is creating a team for the "Wicked FIT Run".  Most of the team members will be walking with a few runners participating also.  We have 3 team members so far and are seeking more.  There will be an information/sign up table between services every Sunday until the race on  Saturday, September 29th .  We will also be accepting donations/walker sponsors at the table.  For more information or to join the team, contact Lynne Slocum, 569-6438, or

Thanks a bunch!

New for September "Capturing the Depth of the Psalms"

Thursdays at 3:00 pm in the Beck Memorial Library starting Sept. 13th

Live under the protection of God Most High and stay in the shadow of God All-Powerful. Then you will say to the
Lord, "You are my fortress, my place of safety; you are my God, and I trust you." The Lord will keep you safe from secret traps and deadly diseases. He will spread his wings over you and keep you secure. His faithfulness is like a shield or a city wall. Psalm 91

We will explore the spirituality of the Psalms and how they relate to th e seasons of our lives. We will use Walter Brueggemann's model of orientation-disorientation-new orientation, that explores how the genres of the Psalms can be viewed in terms of their function. Join us as we hear anew these readings of ancient songs that illumine our human condition and spiritual longing in all their bold realism.
ECW Meeting and Coporate Communion
There will be a meeting of the Episcopal Church Women on Wednesday, September 19 with corporate communion at 9:30 followed by a meeting in the church library.  We will have a guest speaker from Families in Transition and Hope House. Please join us!
August Worship = Hymn Lotto

This August our "Holy Experiment" during worship at both 8:00 and 10:00 am Eucharists will be "Hymn Lotto". In your bulletin each week will be a Recessional Hymn ballot. You are invited to vote for the hymn of your choice* and when you come up for communion, place it in a basket at the baptismal font. At the end of worship, one ballot will be drawn at random and our gifted Minister of Music Holly Simmons will play the selected hymn.

*The fine print = Any hymn from the Hymnal 1982 is eligible (even Christmas Carols).
New Neighbor Connection
In an effort to facilitate not only donations from the All Saints community, but also from anyone else outside Manchester. Amadou Hamady and I have been looking for a good home in Manchester for an email system like the one that we have locally in the Governor Wentworth Area Volunteer Coop (GWAVCoop). We believe that we have found a good one, the Organization for Refugee and Immigrant Success in Manchester, an 8-yr old 501(c)(3) organization, serving all immigrant/refugee communities with multiple programs.

The proposed name for the new system is the "New Neighbor Connection"(NNC). It will be primarily a system in which periodic emails will be sent anonymously identifying specific refugee/immigrant family needs (e.g., by Amadou and other school social workers in Manchester) to an anonymous list of recipients who may (or may not) feel able and called to respond. The NNC administrator will also be prepared respond to people seeking to make donations to refugee/immigrant families (e.g., household goods, furniture items, or used computers) . ORIS will be volunteering their time on NNC and will be creating a separate accounting of NNC-related funds. It will provide records of donations for tax-deduction purposes.

We will be providing more information about the New Neighbor Connection in the near future. In the meantime, please email Warren Muir at wrmuir@gmail.com to be included on the list of recipients of anonymous NNC emails describing refugee/immigrant family needs.

Newcomer Classes

Newcomer's classes help orient and welcome those who are new to this faith community and to the broader Episcopal Church. We offer a three-week class designed to answer your questions about All Saints and the Episcopal Church and a reception to meet parish leaders. Classes meet on Sundays 9:00-9:45 in the Beck Memorial Library. We will welcome newcomers in worship at both services on Sunday, September 9th during Bishop Rob's visit to All Saints.

August 26: Christian Formation and Discipleship

So come, you who have much faith and you who have little, you who have been here long and you who have not been here that long, you who have tried and you who have failed. Come, not because the Church invites you; It is Christ who invites you to be known and fed here.
(Adapted from The Iona Community, Iona Abbey Worship Book, (Glasgow, UK: Wild Goose Publications, 2001), 53.)
Red Cross Blood Drive Coming in September
There is an urgent need for blood. Please consider making a donation.

Responding to the Generosity + Hospitality of God

Ministry Moments: Responding to the Generosity + Hospitality of God

As we continue to be a community of love gathered by God, for the sake of the world, you are invited to reflect and commit how you will connect and share the material goods, spiritual gifts, and time God has blessed you with through our shared ministry together. Please share your story by completing and returning the pledge form (available in the narthex lobby) through the offering during worship or return to the church office by September 1st.
Thank You!
Reclaiming Jesus Bible Study and Discussion

A group of Protestant and Roman Catholic leaders, including Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, have begun what they call a campaign to "reclaim Jesus" from those who they believe are using Christian theology for political gain. The group says the church's role is to change the world through the life and love of Jesus Christ, while the government should serve the common good by protecting justice and peace, rewarding good behavior while restraining bad behavior. "When that role is undermined by political leadership, faith leaders must stand up and speak out," the signers say, citing the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. who said the church is the conscience of the state, not its master or its servant.

On Wednesday, August 29th at 6:30 pm in the Beck Library we gather for an hour of Bible Study and discussion about:
"Christ's Way of Leadership is Servanthood"
