HUSD Graduation Rate and College and Career Readiness Improve
The 2019  California School Dashboard   is now available. Visit the site to see the latest data available on student CAASPP test results, graduation rates, attendance, college/career readiness, suspensions and English learner progress.

The Dashboard is part of California’s school accountability and support framework that is designed to empower local communities to address the needs of local schools. It provides parents and educators a fuller picture of students' performance, allowing them to participate in meaningful decision making. It also includes local information about school climate and conditions, parent engagement and basic services. All of these factors are interrelated and contribute to school success.

The Dashboard provides a color rating (red, orange, yellow, green and blue) which shows where the district or school started on an indicator and what change has occurred. The Dashboard shows how far students are from the “met proficient” score in ELA and math according to grade level.
Every school and district can improve. To do so, local communities need to know what they’re doing right and where there are issues to address.
Main Data Points
  • The overall graduation rate has improved (Green). The number of students who graduate in 4 or 5 years is 82.1%, an increase of 1.8%. Hayward High and Mt. Eden High both scored Green.

  • MLK Middle School scored Green for significant improvement in ELA while Mt. Eden and Southgate also scored Green. Southgate scored Green for significant improvement in math. The overall math and ELA ratings suggest the district has remained the same in both areas from the previous year. In ELA, students are -34.8 points from the “met proficiency” level while in math they are -66 below “met proficiency” level.

  • In English language development, for English learners, 48% have improved at least one level on the ELPAC test. This indicator is new and does not have a color rating yet.

  • College and Career Readiness for the district is at 35.4%, up 6.8%, and rated green given the significant improvement. This indicator includes CTE pathways, dual enrollment in college/HS, AP tests, International Baccalaureate, State Seal of Biliteracy, Leadership/Military Science, A-G requirements and CAASPP. Hayward High and Mt. Eden High scored Green.

  • While Palma Ceia and Southgate elementary schools scored Green for improvements in chronic absenteeism (K-8 students who have been absent 10% of year or more), overall the district is at 12.3% (orange), with an increase in chronic absenteeism of 1%.

  • Seven school sites scored Green for improvements in suspension rates while three others scored Blue. The overall suspension rate for the district (suspended at least once) is 4.8%, up .4% (Orange). HUSD is working to bring this indicator down.
Areas to Address
  • Graduation rate for both students with disabilities and English Learners is 62%, 20% below the rate for all students.

  • In both ELA and math, we must move all students closer to, and beyond, the “met proficiency level," especially subgroups. In ELA, seven groups scored Red or Orange while in math, nine groups fell in those same categories.

  • The indicator for College and Career Readiness shows improvement, but we must still work on promotion and documentation of opportunities such as CTE, dual enrollment and AP. We need to determine whether equitable opportunities exist for all students to pursue varied college and career options.

  • Seven groups scored Red or Orange in Chronic Absenteeism. Absenteeism has increased for African American and Hispanic students.

  • Suspension rates vary across sites and subgroups. It is important to look at groups with higher suspension rates in order to determine why and how this trend can be changed. It is important to support sites with higher rates and learn from sites experiencing less suspensions. Seven of our sites did achieve Green status .
The District Advisory Committee that developed our district's strategic plan, reviewed Dashboard data earlier this year as part of its planning process. Our strategic plan will seek to address some of the district's most pressing issues by working with site administrators on continuous improvement processes, creating professional development opportunities for instructional leadership teams, creating more deeper learning opportunities for students, continuing equity work with staff districtwide, working with community partners to support families, using data when making important decisions, and promoting culturally responsive teaching.

Local communities can get involved in continuous improvement by participating in the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) process. The LCAP is your school district’s blueprint for setting goals, reviewing data and aligning resources to support for struggling students.

These exciting changes taking place in education will take time to fully implement. While schools are making progress in many key areas there is always more work to do. The Dashboard is part of an ongoing conversation with our community on both how we’re doing and how we can do better. Meeting goals will take a united effort, and I look forward to working with our families to ensure success for every student.
