Dear Friends of The Blue Purl,

How much time do you spend staring at a screen? It’s probably way more than you realize. These days the distance between the physical world and the digital world often blur. When was the last time you let yourself day dream, rather than pull out your phone?

One antidote to this overdose of data is our making of things, working with our hands, (for this community) with natural fibers and… real life people.

Sure, you can learn to knit online. You can sit in your home and be guided by YouTube videos, and they surely are great when you have to get your groove on with the kitchener stitch for the umpteenth time! But why do that alone when you have the option to sit beside people in a class; peers taking the same journey of discovery as you, and the teachers who want to pass on their knowledge and skills.

We've been working hard to build a sense of community and shared experience. We'll keep working hard to bring you fresh ideas, new yarns, and exciting classes.

Keep your eyes out for a series of new classes next week, which we hope will excite and interest you. We have designers coming for trunk shows, yarn tastings, visiting teachers for workshops... we're getting a disco ball and we can practice our dance moves. Well maybe not the latter, but wouldn't that be fun?

We are all about the physical world, one that isn’t backlit, but one you can touch, feel, experience with all your senses. There is value in the digital, but we all need balance and The Blue Purl aims to help you find that.

Working with wool and fibers is a bit like gardening. It keeps us close to the earth, produces something that's natural, that we then use ourselves or share. We can wear what we grow, clothing that is beautiful and feels good, wrap our loved ones in blankets seriously cozier because we made them :)

There is a time to look at your phone, send a text message, listen to a podcast, or watch an online video. And there is a time to feel the real world around you, to sink your hands into the dirt of your garden.

Let’s get our hands dirty, together.

This pretty cowl is the perfect project if you’re looking for a quick little neck warmer made in thicker yarn. It only requires 130 yds. of chunky weight yarn and could be the project that introduces you to knitting in the round and making lace.

From the pattern: “Knit in the round, Sasha starts and ends with a bit of simple garter stitch. The easy lace pattern in the center reminds us of Gothic arches.” Pattern is both written and charted.”
Techniques include: knitting in round on a circular needle, chart reading and learning yarnovers and decreases to make a simple lace pattern.

cost: $40 + supplies from Blue Purl
Our Fabulous Community!
Mary came in this week with a picture of her adorable Rib and Roll baby hat (pattern available in the shop - sorry can't get my hands on it online) made with Schoppel's Edition 3.
OK this is the softest blanket EVER! Becky made the Chevron Blanket by Knit2 Purl2 in Woolfolk's Tov DK. What an amazing heirloom! The pattern is free on Ravelry!
Nathan's hats are in Ireland near the Cliffs of Moher on a blustery winter day. Carolyn (our fab teacher) said they blew off the tree 3 times before she got the shot. This is her design! OK the wind made us a little less jealous!!
Jennifer Weissman's SHH Shawl This is Fran's 2nd, she said it was fun to make. She used Rowan Pure Wool Worsted. It's lovely Fran!
Linda made the Heart Blanket in Berroco Vintage - pattern by Deborah O'Leary. It is a WOW blanket. Amazing work Linda! Whoever wraps themselves in it will feel the love!
