July: American Grown Design Inspiration Although the New Year officially begins in January, here on the farm we can’t help but think that July deserves a little homage too. There’s something about the month, perhaps it’s the fact we’ve reached the year’s halfway mark or maybe because it’s American Grown Flowers Month… that seems to muster up a little nostalgia. Seasons Greetings As one season transitions into another the flora and colors that dominate our daily harvest shift as well. The crimson, fuchsia and white protea of winter give way to the red and yellow hues of spring. Summer’s lush greens and coral shades become the warm orange and cream Banksia of fall. Text Link

Banksia Foliage Within the wonderfully diverse world of proteas, the Banksia ranks among the best known and most spectacular genera of the Australian Proteaceae. It now includes around a 178 species, plus 19 naturally occurring varieties and an increasing number of registered cultivars. These amazing botanicals are not only popular for their vividly colored flower spikes, their foliage is fabulous too. Mel's Field Notes  Hello friends, For many of us, taking care of our home and the land that surrounds us has become a top priority lately. The time spent on these activities allows us the opportunity to shift our thoughts and actions to things we can do something about or fix rather than worrying and feeling anxious during this era of Covid-19. I've found that maintaining and nurturing my plants has been a great way for me to ‘escape’ and 'unwind'. For most of this month I have been in the nursery and up in the fields helping with the irrigation, plant maintenance and replanting. My haven, my sanctuary! Speaking of havens, my cowboy hat’s off to Where Food Comes From, Inc. (WFCF) for featuring Resendiz Brothers in their July Blog – Storybit. What an awesome job they did telling the story of our passion for proteas and commitment to the American floral industry. The paths I took from my birthplace in Sinaloa, Mexico until I could permanently plant myself here in the United States, and make a life for my family and me in the hills of Rainbow, my favorite place in the world. Cheers to July - American Grown Flowers Month and WFCF! Over the past few months, I have been challenged to think in new directions, and this has given me the chance to rethink goals and adjust for any obstacles in the path going forward. So, it is with great anticipation that I’m leaning into fall… for its amazing bounty and the joy that we'll reap! From August through October, Pink Ice take center stage (they're the stars) in the fields. Pink Ice is one of the hardiest and most prolific plants on the farm! This gorgeous Protea has a goblet shaped bloom surrounded by silvery-pink bracts that overlap and a beautiful rose-colored central dome with a splash of wine at the tip. I love the combining of Pink Ice with Leucadendron Safari Sunset, Jester and Inca Gold along with long stems of textural Grevillea Ivanhoe and Banksia integrifolia. That’s my autumnal recipe, mixing proteas with mood-boosting hues to brighten up your home, and create a warm and welcoming ambience.
