Camp Noel Porter Celebration - this Saturday, Sept. 1

For decades, Camp Noel Porter has been a sacred place for families, young adults, youth, and children. As camping programs have changed, the Camp Noel Porter board and the Board of Trustees have prayerfully decided that it is no longer possible to hold camp programs on this site. It is time to say goodbye to this summer camp ministry, remembering the spirit-filled gifts that we have received here. The time has come to "pass it on" as our camp song reminds us.

We will be honoring this beloved ministry this Saturday, Sept. 1. Below is an agenda of the day: (f or questions, please email  [email protected] )

2:00 p.m.    Visit the camp, arts/crafts, ping-pong, etc.
4:00 p.m.    Eucharist at the Outdoor Chapel
5:00 p.m.    Dinner provided
6:00 p.m.    Campfire
7:30 p.m.    Closing prayer and closing song, "Pass It On"

Camp Noel Porter attire is welcome!

What about the Noel Porter property?
While both boards have reached consensus approving a possible property sale, there is no sale in process at this time. Any sale of the property would need to account for the care of the chapel and answer the concerns about St. Nicholas church.

Our third Pre-Convention Gathering topic is " Following God's Call: From Church Chores to Ministry."  How can our church communities cultivate and support ongoing vocational discernment for brand new and long-time leaders? How can we cultivate spiritual practices that sustain each person's baptismal ministry inside and outside the walls of our churches?

Join us for a morning of learning, discussion, and discernment about these questions.  The event is free, and lunch will be provided.  Learn more here.

Bishop's Book for Fall 2018

Bishop Barry Beisner has selected "The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World" as this fall's Bishop's Book. Join us in reading about this conversation on joy by two remarkable spiritual leaders.

"Joy is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and a clear sign of God's presence and favor. In this time of hard hearts and deep divisions, the Church needs to be seeking true joy -- as a way to build community, nurture our souls, and witness to the world that God exists and that we are God's beloved creation," Bishop Barry said.

From authors Archbishop Desmond Tutu and His Holiness the Dalai Lama:  "We hope this small book will be an invitation to more joy and more happiness...We are sharing what two friends, from very different worlds, have witnessed and learned in our long lives. We hope you will discover whether what is included here is true by applying it in your own life."

You can purchase the book through the Trinity Cathedral Bookshop or on Amazon. A discussion guide for book groups is here.

THE SEARCH FOR OUR NEXT BISHOP
Exciting updates from the Transition Committee!

The Bishop's Transition committee has been hard at work planning for the events leading up to the election of our new bishop. We have been able to solidify a few details that we'd like to share with you.

There will be a series of five "walk abouts" with the final candidates for Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California during the week of January 20, 2019 . "Walk abouts" are a part of the process of meeting the candidates for bishop. The candidates will "take to the road" and visit throughout the diocese in formal and informal ways. During the formal events at each of the churches listed below, the people of the diocese will have an opportunity to meet the candidates, ask, and hear them answer questions about who they are, their ministry in the church and their vision for the diocese. These meetings are open to everyone, not just the voting delegates and we encourage everyone to attend. We also plan to livestream at least one of these events for those who are not able to travel.

The "walk about" events will take place on the following dates and locations:
  • January 21, 2019 - Church of The Incarnation, Santa Rosa
  • January 22, 2019 - St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church, Chico
  • January 23, 2019 - Christ Episcopal Church, Eureka
  • January 24, 2019 - Episcopal Church of St. Martin, Davis
  • January 25, 2019 - Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Sacramento
The Standing Committee has approved the Bishop's Transition Committee recommendation of Faith, Cameron Park, as the location for the Special Convention for the election of the bishop on February 9, 2019. Please note, this is a change from the previously published location.

God willing and the people consenting, the Ordination and Consecration of the 8th Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California will take place on June 29, 2019 at the Mondavi Center, Davis, CA.

More details will be forthcoming as they are available. These details will be published in the Diocesan e-News, on the Bishop Search Website, and on the diocesan Facebook page. The Diocesan Profile, developed for this election is available here. We hope that everyone will read it and learn more about our diocese.
Bishop Search moves forward

We are moving forward on time with our process! The application period closed July 7. The committee met at the end of July to discern which candidates will be moving forward to video interviews, which is the next phase of the process. Following those interviews, select candidates will be invited to the discernment retreat in November.

Thank you for your continued prayers for both our search committee and our applicants! We know God is at work here.  You can view the complete information on our website at  norcalbishopsearch.org.

Immigration talk and Q&A at St. Martin's - Sept. 14

Images of Central American families torn apart at our southern border have been prompting public outrage. The U.S. government explains such measures as necessary to  deter "illegal immigration," though families seeking asylum keep arriving, undeterred. Meanwhile, few in our country ask: Why are families willing to risk their lives to seek safe haven in the U.S.? What are they fleeing? And how can we address the root causes or "push factors" of this migration crisis?

Join Noah Bullock, Executive Director of Cristosal, on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m., at St. Martin's, Davis, for a free talk on immigration entitled "Why are they fleeing?", with a Q&A and reception to follow.

Come learn about these issues and what we can do to help in a conversation with the head of the lead NGO working on forced displacement due to violence in the Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras-the countries from which most families at our border are fleeing. Bullock will talk about the current state of violence and progress made on behalf of victims, such as a landmark July 13 ruling from El Salvador's Supreme Court protecting victims. He will also touch on Cristosal's role in the historic El Mozote massacre trial, and why accountability for atrocities of the past is vital to building peaceful societies today.
Service for the Rev. Ted Ridgway - Sept. 15

Sustainable Development Goals grants are available

This year, your commission has responded to the emergency request from the American Friends of the Diocese of Jerusalem for help for the Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza. The hospital was overwhelmed during the border skirmishes with Israel with injured of all ages and walks of life while access to equipment and supplies was curtailed. We have sent $1,000 out of this year's funds to support the life saving efforts of this hospital.

The remainder of our funds are available for projects that support one or more of the above goals for the development of locally sustainable projects. We are inviting our congregations to consider applying  for grants supporting projects or programs overseas that meet one or more of these goals. We are particularly interested in ways partnerships and projects are being developed in cooperation with and supporting local efforts.

Download the  grant application; the deadline to apply is Sept. 20.
