Dear Religious Education Families,

Welcome to a new year! Kim Slott (Assistant Director-RE), Theresa DePung (Director of CGS), and I are very excited to welcome you all to your Religious Education home! We will be sending out a quarterly newsletter to all RE families to help keep you up-to-date with important events, share news and pictures, and help keep you in touch with what your children are learning.

In this issue, you can:
1) Learn about the second year of our exciting Whole Family Catechesis program
2) Hear from Fr. Bill on the advent of the new year
3) Learn more about some of our Religious Education catechists
4) Learn more about Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and Children's Liturgy of the Word
5) get an early look at our Fall Mailing and Important Dates for children in Sacramental years.

We hope this newsletter helps keep you informed and engaged with your child's learning! Our hope is that we can continue to help each family grow in their faith! Please let us know if there is anything else we can do to serve you!

WORDS FROM FATHER BILL
Welcome to another season of Religious Education. Robby Kiley, Theresa DePung, and Kim Slott have been working with the catechists to make sure that your children have the best possible experiences this year. They are excited about supporting you in your role as primary educators of your children in the ways of faith. I highly recommend, if you have not already done so, that you and your family take part in the sessions for "Whole Family Catechesis." This new initiative worked well in its first year last year, and we look forward to its continued growth this year (Editors note: see the Whole Family Catechesis article for more details! - Robby).

We have begun the final stage of our parish expansion project this summer. You can see the construction on the south side of the Parish Education Center. The workers are on schedule and should have the addition under cover by winter. Although the construction will cause complications during this year, it will provide much more space for our educational programs beginning with the 2019 school year. There will be six more classrooms, four more restrooms, a new multipurpose room, and better suited space for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and the Children of Saint Angela Merici. Thank you for putting up with the inconveniences this year.

Both Father Eric and I are looking forward to being involved in the religious education of your children. We will visit the classrooms and be present to the students during Advent and Lent for their Penance Services. I always look forward to parent preparation sessions for second grade and eighth grade families, as well as the retreats designed to prepare the students. It will be an exciting year for spiritual growth!

ATTENTION PARENTS OF STUDENTS IN SECOND, SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE
We are thrilled to join with our families of second and eighth grade students as they prepare to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation. Sacramental years are busy ones, as parent meetings, retreats, and parties can quickly fill up a family's schedule.

Before the year gets too busy, each family is encouraged to stop and pray for those children preparing to receive their sacraments. Your example of prayer will be a great encouragement and model for your children!

We know that many families have questions during sacramental years. This is also true for families in seventh grade, who will be entering into the diocesan Theology of the Body curriculum this year. To help answer these questions, we offer parent meetings at the beginning of the year. Please note the following parent meeting times below. CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD
Welcoming our youngest parishioners ages 4-6, CLW meets on Sunday morning during the 8:00 and 10:00 a. m. Mass.

What exactly is Children's Liturgy of the Word?  What happens with that gaggle of children who leave church each Sunday, following a catechist with a Book of the Gospels?

Each Sunday from September through Holy Week, our priests invite our children to leave church with their catechist and go hear the Gospel, then to come back and share what they have learned. The catechist proclaims the Gospel from the Lectionary For Masses with Children. This is the same Gospel that the assembly hears in church. The Gospel is then explained in the words that a 4-6 year-old can understand. Then the children pray the Prayers of Intercession (just like the grown-ups in church). The catechist shares an activity related to the Gospel. Usually the children are given something to color related to the Gospel, and even sing songs if time permits.

The Catechist will proclaim the Gospel from an Ambo with a liturgically correct cloth color, helping the children to learn that "Green is for growing; Purple is for preparing; and White or Gold is for celebrating." Parents are asked to join us a few times during the year to help.

You are also welcome to join us to see what Children's Liturgy of the Word is all about. The children ask some very interesting questions, and I am surprised at how much they really understand. We love our meeting space in the new Parish Life Center - it gives us plenty of room to wiggle and spread out, and we are close to our Moms and Dads.
The children are walked back into church to join the assembly for the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Please feel free to contact us in the Religious Education O ffice for more information: (574) 277-5760 Ext: 132, k [email protected].

WHOLE FAMILY CATECHESIS-YEAR TWO!
WFC
We are thrilled to bring back Whole Family Catechesis this September! WFC allows both parents and children to learn more about their faith, share a meal, and spend time as a family having a conversation about their Catholic faith. The WFC program is open to families with children of all ages - even those with grown children or no children! Each month will feature sessions for adults, young children, middle school-aged children, and high school-aged teens. Daycare is also provided for children ages 0-3.

New this year, we will be offering two Sunday sessions between the 10:00 and 12:00 Masses. These sessions will focus on the liturgical year, and will provide families with an opportunity to create something together that will help them pray as a family at home - Advent Wreaths in November and Works of Mercy Chains for Lent in March.

Registration for the September 27 session is now open:

FALL MAILING
The 2018-2019 Religious Education school-year begins on September 9. Our
Fall Mailing should have arrived in your mailbox by now. In this mailing, you will find a welcome letter with news about our upcoming year. You will also find our Religious Education policies and a policy acceptance form. Families are expected to review these policies, and each child is asked to sign the policy acceptance form. You can also find all of the content of the
Fall Mailing on our website HERE. Thank you for being attentive to these important policies as we prepare for the new year! Please also pay special attention to the drop-off/pick-up procedures, as we enter into our second year of our new student safety plan.

DO YOU HAVE YOUNGER CHILDREN?
Did you know that we  offer programming for children who are not yet old enough for our Religious Education programs. Chldren's Liturgy of the Word is offered for children ages 4-6, during Sunday morning 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. Mass. There is no cost, but registration is required - you can find more information (and online registration forms) on our website: StPius.net/clw. See Kim Slott's article to the left for more information!

OPENING MASS AND OPEN HOUSE
This year, we will continue our tradition of celebrating the second week of classes with an opening Mass and Open House. These Masses provide us an opportunity to worship together as a Religious Education community. We sincerely hope you make these Masses a priority for your family - the best way you can teach your children about the importance of their faith is through your example!

Students in the Sunday CCD classes will be recognized at the 10:00 am Mass on September 16. There will be an open house to follow immediately after Mass in the Parish Life Center.

Students in weekday CCD, CGS, RCIC, and CSAM classes will have their Mass on Monday, September 17 at 5:30, with an open house to follow immediately after Mass in the Parish Life Center. (NOTE: There will be no classes the week of September 16-20.)

The Open House will feature light refreshments, served by your children's catechists. They will all have nametags with their name and the grade they teach, so please be sure to introduce yourself! There will also be representatives from a number of parish ministries on hand to help get your children plugged into our parish and answer any questions you may have. The middle school youth ministers, liturgical ministers, Whole Family Catechesis team, and more are very excited to meet you!
