Featured Readers this year:
Catherine Arra is author of Slamming & Splitting (Red Ochre Press, 2014), Loving from the Backbone (Flutter Press, 2015), and Tales of Intrigue & Plumage (FutureCycle Press, 2017). A former English and writing teacher, Catherine facilitates the Stone Ridge Library Writers' group.

Frank Boyer began writing poetry in his 20s and has kept his hand in ever since. His chapbook of early poems, Jumping Out of My Skin, was published in 2009. He is presently working on a book that retells the Orpheus and Osiris myths. He's is always happy to be where poetry is.
             
Bill Fellenberg was born in Occupation Japan to a Yokohama shop girl and an American GI. They came to America when he was four. After a career in the arts and in higher education, Bill began to write full-time. He lives in the Catskills with his wife, Donna, a psychoanalyst. Their son, Miles, is a classical pianist.

Fay L. Loomis, the middle child of seven, spent her early years in rural Michigan, before migrating to California. An upstater for the past twelve years, her poetry and prose have appeared in online and print publications.

Cliff Mallery has been a lawyer, a teacher and a tender of bar. He writes recreationally about people he has known who may now be forgotten. By his writing, he hopes that they will be remembered. He lives in Accord with his wife and dog.

Mike Polcari grew up in Stone Ridge, returning to country living after residing in Boston, San Francisco and Las Vegas. He spends summers in Northern California running a kids camp, inspiring his second book. As a former professional poker player who finished 11th in a World Series of Poker Tournament, he found many characters on the felt who stoked his creative fire. He writes popular fiction in the thriller genre and has completed two novels.

Lisa St. John is a teacher and published poet currently working on a memoir. Her poetry can be found in places such as Chronogram, 2Elizabeths, and The Poet's Billow. She also recently had a memoir excerpt published in Grief Digest. Lisa's two blogs and her poetry chapbook are on her website, lisachristinastjohn.com.

Natasha Williams is an adjunct biology professor at SUNY Ulster in Stone Ridge, NY and currently works as a consultant with the International Public Schools coaching science teachers. She is working on a memoir, excerpts of which were selected by the NY writers institute in their memoir writers seminar taught by James Lasdun of Columbia University and published in 650 Read.
Pulse of the Planet Anniversary Tour Kicks Off at Stone Ridge Library

Jim Metzner will be taking Pulse of the Planet on the road this fall, launching his "30th Anniversary Legacy Tour!" with a live event at our Library. The tour, set to include cities like New Orleans, Atlanta, Georgia and an October 10 event at the Library of Congress in Washington DC--will begin in Jim's home town of Stone Ridge.
 
The program will celebrate the world of sound, with stories and surprises. Prizes will be awarded for whoever brings the best signature sound of the Hudson Valley (live or pre-recorded by you) and the best animal vocalization imitation. Jim will share some of his favorite sounds as he commemorates 30 years of Pulse of the Planet!
 
Jim Metzner has been producing sound-rich radio programs since 1977, beginning his career with a ground-breaking short format series--You're Hearing Boston, produced for CBS station WEEI-FM.  Metzner's other award-winning series include You're Hearing San Francisco, You're Hearing America, The Sounds of Science, Voices of Innovation, and Pulse of the Planet, which has been on the air since 1988.  

Pulse of the Planet airs on over 200 stations in the US (locally on WAMC)  and receives thousands of downloads every month as a podcast.  Jim has recorded all over the world and has produced features for public radio's Marketplace, All Things Considered and Morning Edition as well as for National Geographic Online, Discovery,  the American Museum of Natural History, the American Association of Engineering Societies, NASA, Virginia Tech, and the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies. Stories and reviews of  Jim's work have appeared in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Christian Science Monitor,  New York Magazine, the Today Show, Rolling Stone and Audio Magazine.

Jim has received major grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Honda Foundation. He was a Media Fellow at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole and in 2016 chaired a panel at the 40th anniversary of the MBL's Ecosystem Centre.  In 2017, he travelled to Germany, Austria and Switzerland as a Fulbright Scholar. CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS
We are super excited to be able to offer After School Story Hours in the newly renovated meeting area off the Children's Room. The theme will be Greek Mythology. After School Story Hours for grades 2 and 3 will meet Tuesdays. Kindergarten and First Grade will meet Thursdays. The programs begin the week of October 22.

Beginning September 18, Preschool Story Hours with Ms. Celeste will meet Tuesday mornings at 10:00.

We would like to invite children in the intermediate school to join us for a cooking program on Friday, November 9 at 3:00pm, and a craft project with Jill Obrig on Friday, November 16 at 3:00pm.

Please register for these programs so we can update you with any changes. Space for the Tween programming is limited to 15 children, so be sure to  register on our on-line calendar which will be available the first week in September.

Board of Trustees Election and
Library Budget Vote
The Stone Ridge Library Budget of $269,868 has been approved by a 42-2 vote. Judith Schneller and Linda Still have been voted in with 41 votes each to four-year seats on the Board of Trustees.

Children's Reading Nook Dedication July 19
Fran Ryder was an avid reader and a staunch Stone Ridge Library volunteer for many years. After her passing, her family decided to donate a reading nook in her memory. The family visited the Library on July 19 to dedicate the space with its comfortable arm chair and hassock, bench and cheerful tree wall hanging. The birdhouse plaque hanging on the wall, has the inscription:

The book for our September meeting is The Magician's Assistant by Ann Patchett. When Parsifal, a handsome and charming magician, dies suddenly, his widow Sabine-who was also his faithful assistant for twenty years-learns that the family he claimed to have lost in a tragic accident is very much alive and well. This month we will be reading   Field of Darkness by Cornelia Read. Every page is a pleasure in this mystery debut featuring barb-wielding, ex-debutante Madeline Dare. This is sure to be loved by fans of comic mysteries, but don't be surprised if Tom Wolfe readers are equally smitten by Read's venomously witty portrait of a fallen WASP.

The reading selection for October is Lost Kingdom: Hawaii's Last Queen, the Sugar Kings and America's First Imperial Adventure by Julia Siler.
Examines the nineteenth-century clash between the native Hawaiians and the expanding capitalist powers of America, Britain, and France, centering on Lili'uokalani, the last queen of Hawaii. Born in 1838, she lived through the nearly complete economic transformation of the islands. Lucrative sugar plantations owned almost exclusively by white planters, dubbed the "Sugar Kings," gradually subsumed the majority of the land. The monarchy had become a figurehead, victim to manipulation from the wealthy sugar-plantation owners. Upon ascending to the throne, Lili'uokalani was determined to enact a constitution reinstating the monarchy's power but she was outmaneuvered and, in January 1893, U.S. Marines from the USS Boston marched through the streets of Honolulu to the palace. The annexation of Hawaii had begun, ushering in a new century of American imperialism.

Claudine is a native French speaker, born in Paris and raised in Europe; following a 30 year Government career abroad, she chose Stone Ridge to retire in. Two separate writers' groups meet on alternate Mondays at the library, with a maximum of 10 participants in each group. This program is designed for those who are actively writing and publishing work and who want to participate in a structured critical feedback process. Cathy Arra, a poet, writer, and former teacher of English and Writing in the Rondout Valley School District, facilitates the groups. If you are interested in participating, please contact Cathy Arra to place your name on the waiting list. Group I is full. Group II started in May.
Mahjong
Every Friday, at 10am

Beginners are welcome to join our new Mahjong group. We have two sets available but welcome additional sets if available to loan. Register on line on the calendar or at the Circulation Desk in the Library, or just walk in. Our group will meet every Friday at 10am.
KNITTING GROUP

Every Saturday
10am-noon

The Stone Ridge Library Knitters meet every Saturday morning from 10am - 12noon. All ages and experience levels can join us and drop-in knitters are also welcome. We each bring our own supplies and do our own work, but one of the best things about us is that whatever obstacle or confusion you might encounter, you're likely to receive as much comment and advice as you need to get where you're going with a project. Some of us can help toward the repair of knitted or crocheted items too.

The group is sociable and lively, and our conversation and sharing is just as wide-ranging as our projects. We are especially interested in the UFOs (Un-Finished Objects) that members bring in and love the show and tell of projects under way and being finished, new or old, simple or complex. Though knitting is our love and mainstay, we graciously adapt ourselves to stray crocheters and those of us who simply must take to the hook when the spirit moves. We share articles, magazines and books on knitting. Donations of yarn to the Library get made up into items for sale at the Library Fair and during the winter holidays for the benefit of the Library. Some of us also knit things for local hospitals or for the U.S. troops.
