Rabbi Ed Stafman, recently elected to the Montana state legislature, ran in a liberal district on a social justice platform. He didn't waste any time using his new pulpit to spread disinformation about Judaism and abortion. Employing convoluted reasoning skills he perfected in the courtroom during his 25 years as a civil rights attorney, Rabbi Stafman used his first floor speech last month to oppose a Montana bill that would effectively ban abortions after 20 weeks gestation.
In lock step with the NCJW's Rabbis for Repro talking points, he conveyed to the audience that Jews believe in killing children when he said that the bill impinged on Jewish religious beliefs.
He went on to ignore the child's right to life as he distorted constitutional principles: “Many of you promised limited government — ‘freedom, liberty, individual choice,’ you proclaim,” he said on the floor. “But this bill would interfere with the sacred freedom of all Montana women and families to make health care and religious choices together with their doctor, their clergy, their conscience and their god.”
I wonder if he would defend honor killings by adherents to Islam living in the United States? Would he argue for the right of religious zealots committed to a holy war to murder innocent Americans?
The rabbi went on to insult the integrity of a ban on late term abortion by implying that the legislation would be used to force parents to continue the pregnancy of a 'doomed fetus', rather than acknowledge that late term abortion is often used as birth control, eugenics abortion on healthy Down Syndrome babies, harvesting baby body parts from healthy, viable infants, and killing babies who survive abortion.
Rabbi Stafman was ordained in the 2000's by ALEPH: Alliance for Jewish Renewal, a trans-denominational approach to revitalizing Judaism. He's doing a fantastic job doing as he was taught - misrepresenting the original pro-life religion as a heartless baby killing cult.
