Announcing a new weekly meditation class beginning Wednesday, August 19
Bodhi Brain: Neuro-cise with Meditation
A year-long weekly drop-in class led by Sangye Hawke, UUFSCC Intern Minister
Beginners and Advanced alike are welcome. Meditation practice will be held in the Buddhist tradition of guidance, breathing instruction, and posture direction. Each class will begin with a 40-minute meditation session. After a short break of 3 minutes, a lecture will be given by the Intern Minister and an occasional guest speaker. Topics will include: historical Buddhism's impact on western culture, Compassion and Health Meditation, and Buddhist/Indigenous-centric approaches to social justice with emphasis on climate change. The lectures will be followed by a period of Q and A. The goal of the class is to introduce meditation as a respite and strategy for COVID Coping and navigating life transitions
as a whole.
The total class time is 1.5 hours.
7:00 to 8:30 pm on Wednesdays from August 19, 2020 to May 26, 2021 (Holidays exempt.) Age requirement: 18+. Upcoming topic for each class to be announced the week in advance with Zoom link.

A documentary film screening and online discussion of
The Long Shadow by Frances Causey
This powerful documentary takes a shockingly candid look at America's original sin - slavery - and traces the history of slavery from the country's founding, up through its insidious ties to racism today.
Rev Russ Menk will facilitate 2 discussion sessions on Zoom about the documentary film.
Session 1 will cover the first 40 minutes of the film (from inception to the end of the Civil War):

Session 2 will cover on the last 42 minutes of the film (post-Civil war to today).

by Ibram X. Kendi
Ibram X. Kendi's concept of antiracism reenergizes and reshapes the conversation about racial justice in America--but even more fundamentally, points us toward liberating new ways of thinking about ourselves and each other. Instead of working with the policies and system we have in place, Kendi asks us to think about what an antiracist society might look like, and how we can play an active role in building it.
How to Be an Antiracist promises to become an essential book for anyone who wants to go beyond an awareness of racism to the next step of contributing to the formation of a truly just and equitable society.

Shared Plate for August 2020
The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted people within our congregation and close community. Our Shared Plate recipient for August will be the Minister's Discretionary Fund-an account where 100% of your donation goes to a congregant or community member in need. Rev Russ Menk administers this fund directly and exclusively. By contributing to this fund, you are helping people of our congregation.
