Residents should be aware of a billing error by Waste Management relating to yardwaste services that some residents may not have signed up for, and that there have been bobcat sightings in the northern portion of the Village. A solar panel project proposed by District 96 has been approved by the Village Board, and residents are reminded to keep ditches and culverts clear to prevent flooding, and to preserve pavement and roadways in the Village. Save the date for an upcoming free ephemerals seminar hosted by the Reed-Turner Woodland Preserve, as well as Household Hazard Chemical Waste drop-off events in April, hosted by SWALCO. Please also see results from the April 2, 2019 Election, and the Village's meeting calendar below.

Bobcat Sightings

Bobcats sightings have been reported in recent weeks in the northern part of the Village of Long Grove, and while these are beautiful animals, residents should be aware of what to do when encountering one. Bobcats are predators, and can become a nuisance that has to be controlled. They are known to scream at night, and if they are rabid, can pose serious health risks to humans. If they are hungry, they can target small animals such as dogs that may be left in backyards, or on property, unattended.

If a Bobcat is encountered, residents should  keep a safe distance between themselves and the animal. Children and pets should also be  protected. Wildlife experts suggest moving slowly backwards to create distance; running can trigger an attack response in Bobcats. The animal can be encouraged to leave areas if people make loud noises or spray the animal with water.
Free Ephemerals Seminar Offered Monday,  April 8, 2019
Spring is one of the busier times at Reed-Turner Woodland Preserve, as wildflower lovers come out to enjoy the sights and take photos of the spring ephemerals. What is an ephemeral? It's a perennial plant that emerges quickly in the spring and dies back to its underground root or bulb for the remainder of the year. Reed-Turner's diverse terrain, including fields, woodlands, streams, sun and shade - both wet and dry - provides different spots for ephemerals. Due to them being protected for decades in the preserve, they flourish.

The Long Grove-Kildeer Garden Club is offering a free seminar on ephemerals at Reed Turner Woodland Nature Center, 3849 Old McHenry Road in Long Grove on Monday, April 8, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. Landscape Architect Ed Max will be the guest speaker, and all are welcome. Take a hike through the Woodland afterwards to see what wildflowers have already emerged.

Upcoming Robert Parker Coffin Road Improvement Project
The covered Bridge prior to the June 2018 accident that caused its cover to be removed. The timber cover will be replaced by this summer.
The proposed new Village of Long Grove budget includes $1.86 million in funds for the upcoming Robert Parker Coffin (RPC) Road reconstruction project, expected to begin in June. Once completed, it will provide a wide variety of aesthetic improvements and attractive streetscapes in the downtown area, including  landscaping, new street lights, benches, and new ADA accessible sidewalks. The wood cover of the RPC Bridge will also be replaced during this project, along with proposed structural improvements to the Bridge. Due to the Village's road repair program being nearly 50% ahead of schedule, the intermittent patching of roads will continue, but funds previously set aside for this program will instead be used to cover the RPC project.

RPC Road is a Village-owned road, and therefore, the Village is responsible for 100% of the costs associated with this project. In addition to the aesthetic improvements listed above, the project also will include the extension of the public watermain to promote additional economic development in the downtown, as well as water and storm sewer drainage improvements. For more information, please call Village Hall at 847-634-9440
WM Yardwaste Billing Error
Waste Management (WM) recently sent out a bill to all Long Grove residents for yardwaste services in the amount of $120. WM has informed the Village that this communication was sent to every Long Grove residence, whether they have subscribed to this additional service or not.

PLEASE NOTE: Residents who subscribe to yardwaste services through WM will be billed as normal for this service; those who did NOT subscribe to this service/do not want to utilize it, should contact Village Hall at 847-634-9440 and ask for Sherry to confirm they are opted out of this program.
District 96 Solar Panel Project Approved by Village Board
During the March 26, 2019 Board Meeting, the Long Grove Village Board approved a solar project, proposed by Kildeer Countryside Elementary School District 96. The approval allows a special permit for ground-mounted solar panels to be installed on three acres of the 69-acre campus owned by the school district near Diamond Lake and Gilmer roads. Once the approximately $3 million project is completed, District 96 plans for it to provide 99% of the electricity used at Woodlawn Middle School and Country Meadows Elementary School, in addition to educational opportunities for District 96 students to learn about alternative energy solutions.

This plan has been in the works for more than a year, as the school district made a number of modifications to address concerns from Long Grove residents and the Village Board. These include the creation of 6 foot berms and the planting of evergreen trees to screen views of the panels from nearby property owners. For more information, please contact Village Hall at 847-634-9440.
Old McHenry Road Project
Work Continues
Roadwork continues on Old McHenry Road, in an effort to complete the project by this coming fall. Below is a breakdown of work that has been ongoing over the last couple of weeks. Residents should refer to the Lake County Department of Transportation (LCDOT) website for real-time updates and to sign up to be added to the project's email list.

Temporary pavement markings have been placed on Old McHenry Road; the contractor is nearing completion of sidewalk construction and street light foundation installation. This work should continue through the end of this week, weather-dependent. Crews have begun placing and grading soils along the sidewalk. Concrete pad installation for future benches is expected to begin before the week is over, but that is also weather-dependent.

Traffic Impacts: Motorists should watch for workers and flaggers as daily lane closures will be utilized. Also, please watch for trucks coming in and out of the jobsite. The LCDOT website, which provides ongoing updates, can be found here.
Keep Ditches and Culverts
Clear This Spring
Now that spring is here (and spring showers may soon be on the way), the Village of Long Grove is encouraging residents to ensure ditches and culverts on their property are mowed and remain clear of any debris. These simple efforts can prevent flooding on Village streets, and extend the life of pavement and adjacent roadways.

Most public roads, including Village, State and County roads, have what is called a rural cross-section design standard. Village Code requires that the roadways have ditches on both sides of them to collect stormwater drainage. This design helps to ensure that water is collected, and that the road remains as dry as possible during heavy precipitation. The Village's annual street maintenance plan includes cutting back vegetation along the edges of Village roads, which helps to keep these areas clear. Residents can do their part by regularly mowing ditches and periodically inspecting and cleaning out ditches and driveway culverts in front of their homes. Through working together, the life of Village roadways can be extended, and flooding throughout the Village can be minimized or even avoided. For any questions, please contact Village Hall at 847-634-9440
