Lesson Modules 8
Engineering & Biology (Continued)
Engineering - by Mr. Holland

This module is an Introduction to Engineering and the Engineering Design Process. The first day will began with the basics of Engineering and the different Engineering fields. The following days will deal with one of the fields of Engineering with an accompanying activity.

There will be a video demonstration at the start of each daily lesson. Each lesson will start with a short video PowerPoint, or just go right into the activity. Most of the materials for the activities should be items that you can find around the house. Feel free to do the activities in the order you choose.
Biology: Investigating the Human Body (Continued) - by Dr. Masino

This module will focus on human anatomy (knowing the different structures of the body) and human physiology (knowing the different roles carried out by each of those structures). Structure and function are related to each other, as you’ll see as we investigate how the body functions during sleep, exercise, or eating a meal. We will also look at how the bones and muscles change as you grow older. As we do this, you will learn about a few different systems in the body. Systems are sets of organs and tissues that work together to carry out shared functions. Our exploration will include the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, and endocrine systems. In each module, there will be a short video lecture about the topic and several activities to help you test out some of the ideas presented for yourself.

Module Schedule
  • Day 4: What happens in your body when you are sleeping? (Nervous System)
  • Day 5: What happens in your body when you exercise? (Circulatory and Respiratory Systems)
  • Bonus Day: What happens in your body during a cold?
Office Hours
Office hours are optional. This time is for students to ask questions of the instructor and check-in with us and each other. We've added extra Computer Science hours this week so you have more chances to engage with the instructors and ask questions.

Meet the Instructors
Hi, my name is Timothy Holland . I have been teaching Math, Chemistry, and Physics for 27 years. I am currently in my 9th year teaching at Cedar Ridge High School in Round Rock. I teach AP Physics 1 and AP Physics C; also as part of the Cedar Ridge Engineering Academy, I teach Digital Electronics. This is my 12th year working with AUSPREP, for which I will be teaching Physics.

I really enjoy teaching Physics. To motivate students, I teach with energy and incorporate demonstrations into the lessons to make them more fun and interesting. My best moments in the classroom are hearing students respond to understanding a concept and seeing the look on their faces during a demonstration. My purpose is to continue to find ways to make teaching Physics easier and fun to learn.
Amanda Masino, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Biology at Huston-Tillotson University, is a geneticist and environmental educator whose approach to education blends science with community-focused research. She directs HT’s STEM Research Scholars Program and heads an NSF-funded project to infuse research training into HT’s Natural Science curriculum. Her current research focuses on home-health connections and encompasses a resident-focused investigation of affordable housing impacts and the environmental health of our homes in terms of microbial diversity and air quality.

She is Executive Director of the Austin Community Data Coalition, a non-profit she co-founded to organize collaborations for community research on affordable housing and environmental health. Amanda also serves as Co-Director of the Dumpster Project, an educational initiative that is transforming a used trash dumpster into a sustainable home as a K-16 learning platform and engagement tool. She advises HT's environmental justice student group Green is the New Black, directs the Environmental Justice academic program, co-founded and coordinates the Building Green Justice Forum, and serves on the City of Austin's Zero Waste Advisory Commission. In the pre-health realm, Amanda serves as faculty co-director of HT's St. David's Foundation Scholars, a pre-health career enrichment program, and as Joint Admission Faculty Program faculty director.
Featured Resources
In addition to AusPREP Online, we are happy to connect participants to high-quality resources available from outside sources that will extend learning and enrichment. The links will also be accessible via the AusPREP homepage and here .

eGFI - Hey there, future engineers, if you’re looking to find more info about engineering and meet students like you, then the Engineering, Go for It! eGFI is proudly brought to you by the American Society for Engineering Education ( ASEE). They are committed to promoting and enhancing efforts to improve K-12 STEM and engineering education. Take a look around at their various resources including exploring different engineering fields, meet other students, a blog, and a newsletter you can subscribe to, with updated features will arrive in your inbox every week.

Department of Energy and STEM - For kids of all ages, there is always something new to learn about science and technology. The Energy Department supports science education through educational online content, resources for parents and teachers, internships and student partnership programs, and national events.

McDonald Observatory - These engaging, TEKS/TAKS aligned activities create opportunity for K-12 students to explore astronomy, physics and chemistry. Activities are originally intended to be done in the classroom, so some require specialized equipment but others can be done with objects commonly found at home. Lessons are divided by grade level.

Live STEM industry chats - Meet (virtually) professionals speaking to share their skills and expertise across a wide range of fields from a Student Law Academy Series to Veterinary medicine in this series presented by IF/THEN Initiative and Nepris. Students have access to our Video Library and Career Explorer. Parent or teacher consent is required for students to join LIVE Industry Chats. A parent or teacher should first register for an Industry Chat to obtain a session access code to share with their student (s).

STEM Meets Sport - A cross-industry feature space focusing on STEM careers, and specifically, on highlighting women in the STEM and sports spaces who have had their careers and personal development paths defined by their participation in both sports and STEM. Explore how both STEM and sport can play a role in your life today and in your future.
