CFIs Joining Team SCFC Summer
Last month, SCFC added 2 flight instructors to the ranks, in response to increased demand for the summer flying season.  Daniel Stellini returns to flight instruction after flying with Compass Aviation and United Airlines, after first learning to fly in North Carolina.  Lukasz Zoromski moved to California from Wisconsin in time to join the group of instructors working with this year's Upwind Scholarship recipients.  You can reach either of these CFIs for a flight review or work on some aspect of piloting at  daniel.stellini@sancarlosflight.com

SCFC is always looking for great instructors, but we tend to be very selective.  Choosing the right people is one way that the Flight Center keeps its focus on Safety, Community, and Adventure.

Safety
Concord Airspace Has Changed
SF Bay Area pilots should note that the Class D surface area surrounding Concord's Buchanan Airport has changed.  The surface area has been reduced in size and much of the airspace returned to Class E and G.  The Class D airspace at Buchanan Field now extends upward from the surface to and including 2,500 feet MSL within a 4.1-mile radius of the airport, with the Western section from 205° clockwise to 314° reduced to a 2.6-mile radius of airport.  Presumably this will help the airport reduce noise complaints from residential communities just West of the airport.

SCFC's Cleaning Practices
San Carlos Flight Center performs continuous interior and exterior cleaning of our fleet.   Our staff employs a variety of procedures to keep aircraft interiors cosmetically and hygienically clean. For general cleaning of interior surfaces, we use soap and water, cleaning door panels, handles, cup holders and sun visors, vacuuming the floors, and we use a preservative seat treatment to keep them clean.

For high-touch surfaces, we use both hydrogen peroxide and isopropyl alcohol to clean fingerprints and disinfect. Avionics display screens are cleaned with a dilute solution of soap and water. Other controls cleaned include control wheels, switches, and knobs. Avionics surfaces can often be eroded by chemical cleaners, so we have processes and materials unique to each type.

We provide pilots with disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer at the office entrance and in the key lockbox. Use these on your hands or the flight controls but please do not use these to wipe avionics, as they can damage screens and remove imprinted legends.

Runway 28R at Hayward Airport has New Updates
San Carlos Flight Center wants you to be safe during your flight to hayward. So we've asked the Hayward airport if they had any news for any pilot flying into the airport. We now know that runway 28R/10L is closed and no touch and goes on 28L/10R are allowed when the tower is closed. For a reminder of the noise abatement procedures click here

Stuck at a Distant Airport? What Do I Do Now?
As pilots, we all know that sometimes things don't go as planned. Occasionally, we may find ourselves grounded away from San Carlos. If this happens to you, your primary goal is to keep yourself and your passengers safe. If your trip was delayed due to weather, illness, or a personal factor, make sure you take care of yourself first, and then let the Flight Center know of your next course of action.

If the problem is mechanical, contact the Flight Center for assistance. We may be able to recommend a mechanic at that airfield, or will work with our team to ferry a mechanic from KSQL to your location to make the repairs. You also may elect to stay and wait for repairs to be finished, or you can decide to make your own way home by other means of transportation.

No matter the situation, reach out to the Front Desk to inform them of your plans. The team is happy to help in any way they can, and they're here to help make your next trip as easy and fun as possible!

SCFC:  What is it like to study for the Private Pilot License?
AF:  It is a lot of work. It has been a big challenge for me but I am grateful for the opportunity. Juggling a full time job, new family, & studying for my PPL has really taught me how to manage my time a lot better. I have spent a lot of late nights up preparing and making sure I understand everything needed to be a better pilot.

SCFC :  How did you prepare yourself mentally and physically for the Checkride?
AF:   To prepare for my check ride I soloed as much as I can, practicing all the ACS tasks so I can be mentally and physically prepared for the checkride. Having these repetitions improves my confidence level each time I fly.

SCFC:   How do you schedule a Checkride with a DPE?
AF:   My CFI gave me the name and website for a DPE that he has used in the past for his students. On his website he has a link "Request a Check Ride", with spots to fill in the required info for scheduling a check ride. There is also other information on what to expect, fees, why did applicants fail, and about the DPE that was useful to read ahead of time.

SCFC:  What is the next step after getting your Private Pilot Certification?
AF: I am looking forward to getting checked out for mountain flying and training in the 182 for a high performance endorsement.

Upwind 2020 Is Taking Off
Here's an update for the hundreds of local SQL pilots who donated to the Upwind Summer Scholarship Program in support of high school aviators.

The program launched on schedule, although with some changes put in place by SCFC in response to the COVID-19 health crisis.  In air flight training was delayed two weeks, replaced by an accelerated deep ground training program.  Upwind students study and train from 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday, at in intense pace of learning.  This week, the students are beginning to hit the Solo milestone, and continuing on into cross-country training.

Thank you to all the pilots who make this annual give of aviation possible.  It's important to encourage the next generation of pilots to keep GA strong, and the Upwind Summer Scholarship Program is doing just that.
