Sensor Innovations To Improve Epidemiological Studies On Health Effects Of Air Pollution

The study of health effects of air pollution has been complicated by limited options to conduct exposure assessment, specifically that would allow for personal levels of air pollution exposure assessment. An additional limitation relies on use of secondary data (i.e., hospitalization or death records) to record health events, which may be rare, and not represent the full health impacts of air pollution exposure. This talk will describe sensor innovations from the exposure side (low-cost, personal air monitors) and outcome side (GPS-enabled albuterol inhalers) to improve epidemiological studies on the health effects of air pollution.

AI & EM Based Characterization And Design Optimization Of Efficient And Renewable Energy Conversion Systems

Much research is centered on designing efficient energy conversion systems to respond to energy needs and to secure an environmentally friendly and green economy. This presentation includes an overview of a design process and case studies involving the use of Finite Element based computational electromagnetics (EM) modules needed for the characterization and design optimization of efficient and renewable energy conversion systems and devices. As can be appreciated, optimization algorithms require a large number of design points generated from EM characterization modules in order to characterize the search space over a wide range of design vectors. In our work, Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms are utilized to reduce computational time requirements and to exploit the large degree of uncertainty in system characteristics in order to achieve fast, accurate, robust, low-cost solutions based on some knowledge of performance.

Bluetooth Mesh - Tips for Use in Embedded Systems
   A complete introduction on Bluetooth Mesh can be found here: Introducing-Bluetooth-Mesh-NetworkingAs an introductory note, this brief article focuses on some of the practical implementations of Bluetooth Mesh (Mesh) from an embedded software standpoint, not all aspects are covered. For a more exhaustive study, there are numerous applications notes available and subject matter experts that be consulted for a more complete understanding.
     First of all, if you want to use Mesh for your application, you'll find that there is not a large diversity of example projects available. The exception to this is if you're trying use Mesh to control lighting or read switches. Both Nordic Semiconductor and Silicon Labs have these examples available. However, if you're trying to use Mesh for other applications, prepare for some research and some trail-and-error development cycles.
     Should your application resemble an available example project, either in full or in part, start with the example project. After this is "working" make incremental changes to move your project closer and closer to resembling your target application. Version control tools will ease this process, and we recommend using them often to support this iterative design approach.
     Secondly, the provisioner is of utmost importance. This is the portion of the Mesh application that assigns node roles, and provides networks keys. In essences, it is the network.
     The provisioner will touch nearly every aspect of the design, and the design will grow in complexity with each new feature allowed to be configured. Consider, only allowing the features and options that are truly essential for your embedded application. Due to this increasing complexity, the importance of enforcing modular design is all the more underscored.
   Your first Mesh project is going to be a challenge. The protocol is organized into layers, and each of these layers contributes a specific role; however, it is challenge to gain a thorough understanding of Mesh's organization. We recommend printing out a sheet paper with graphics for the layers and having them in front of you while working through a provided example. As a developer, having a clear picture in your mind on how the protocol works will allow for more efficient development.
     Last of all, develop a support team. Whether is having knowledgeable FAEs, manufacturer support, or hiring an outside consultant, this can save time when trying to architect the design, or when trying to overcome a particular bug. Mesh has come a long way since its initial release, and even more capability is on the horizon. CEPD can support you if you are using or considering to use Mesh in your products.
