Youth Risk Behavior Survey Data Available Online

The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) -- is administered every other year to Newton Public Schools students in grades 6 to 12. The YRBS is used widely across Massachusetts, based largely on a survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is anonymous and confidential and covers issues such as substance use, violence and safety, and physical and mental health. Newton has been conducting this survey since 1998. A summary of findings and data tables about specific issues are accessible via the link below. Substance use support services now in Newton
|

The Gavin Foundation is now offering substance use support services in Newton.
The Gavin Foundation is a non-profit multi-service agency providing comprehensive community-based substance abuse education, prevention and treatment programs. Newton’s office currently has a PT Peer to Peer Case Manager serving all Newton residents 18 years or over regardless of insurance status, including family and friends concerned about a loved one. Gavin has treatment facilities and programs throughout greater Boston, including Newton, to help with:
- Referrals to detox and all other types of substance use programs
- Drop in support and referrals
- Community-based peer-to-peer support
- Support groups forming (let us know what groups you’d benefit from)
- Long term recovery support including post-treatment stabilization (employment, housing, community building)
- Referrals to mental health services
- Referrals for basic needs (food insecurity, shelter)

The Project
The Monologue Project: Sisterhood Speaks is an intergenerational and intersectional creative writing and theater project, seeking people who identify as women to participate in a night of truth- telling. The event will take place at the Newton Free Library in Druker Auditorium on Wednesday, March 4th, from 7-9pm.
The Purpose
Speakers are encouraged to explore issues of gender, gender roles, identity, gender inequality, sexuality, sisterhood, oppression, race, women in politics, empowerment, women through history, feminism, and their hopes for the future. The goal is to learn from one another, form positive relationships, and lift one another up. This project will demonstrate to the community one of the many ways women support one another, believe one another, and collaboration across generations, cultures, and ways of life.
Submission Guidelines:
- Open to Newton residents and students who attend a Newton high school
- Participants should identify as female
- Submit a poem, song, monologue, essay, vignette, short story, etc. that aligns with the purpose to Quinn Etchie, Director of Youth Services at qetchie@newtonma.gov. (Word Limit 500)
- Submission deadline - Sunday, December 22nd
Next steps:
- Three adult submissions and three youth submissions will be chosen for public reading at the event. If you are not interested in reading your piece publicly, please write “For publication only” in your email subject line.
- Selected submissions may be published online, (with author's permission), at the discretion of the selection committee
