Which nominees will be honored at Awards Gala?
Twenty people, businesses and organizations have been nominated to be honored at the Chamber's Annual Awards Gala for their leadership or contributions to the community. They were nominated by Chamber members and other readers of the Chamber/Main Street newsletter who were asked to give their ideas for worthy selections in an online survey. A Chamber committee will make the award selections for the January 16th event. Chamber Board elects officers;
Doumanian will be president in 2020

The Boyne Area Chamber Board of Directors has elected officers for 2020. Mike Doumanian of Boyne Mountain will be president, Sarah Schraw of Schraw & Associates will be Vice President, Elizabeth Looze of Challenge Mountain will serve as Treasurer and Trent Stark of Korthase Flinn will be Secretary. The new officers and entire board will be formally introduced and installed at the Chamber Annual Awards Gala on January 16th.
Doumanian is the vice president of food and beverage for Boyne Mountain Resort, a position he has held for the past eight years. He has a degree in Food Service/Hospitality Management from Ferris State University. This will be Mike's second term as board president. He took over for a half year in July 2016 and served a full year in 2017.
"This board is a great group of people," he said. "I love working with them and it's a privilege to serve. The chamber is in great shape. We've got a great staff and we don't have to worry about our building any more. So we just want to focus on making the chamber as good as we possibly can."
Joining the board for the new year will be Lacey Matthews, communications & marketing manager of Great Lakes Energy; Patrick Patoka, Avalanche Bay Waterpark manager for Boyne Mountain Resort; and Matt Rader of Pat O'Brien Real Estate and Bella Vita restaurant.

McLeod has built his automotive business from a one-man operation to a nationally recognized industry leader with 29 employees. He is a former winner of the Sally Roselli Business Leadership Award that will again be presented at this year's Awards Gala. McLeod was recently presented with the Hot Rod Industry Alliance's Industry Recognition Award at the annual Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association show in Las Vegas. A former Boyne City policeman who still works part-time for the department, McLeod has been called "the world's coolest cop" by the Hot Rod Network website. NEW NAME FOR BUSINESS AFTER HOURS
'Off the Clock' schedule announced for the new year
The Boyne Area Chamber has announced the 2020 schedule for "Off The Clock," our new name for Business After Hours. This is the Chamber's monthly business networking event, held at member businesses. The first one of the year, as always, is the Annual Awards Gala at Boyne Mountain Resort on Thursday, January 16th. Except for the Awards Gala and the Regional Business After hours, there is no charge for admission or refreshments. Chamber members and the general public are welcome to attend. Pre-scheduled rides get priority
County Transit offers cheap bus rides on New Year's Eve
Charlevoix County Transit will again be offering low-cost countywide bus service on New Year's Eve. It's cold out. You've had one or two drinks. The roads are bad. Whatever your reason for not wanting to leave the house, why not ride the bus? County Transit's friendly staff and warm buses will get you where you're going on New Year's Eve. Fares are just $2 for adults, $1.50 for youths age 3-18, $1.50 for disabled people and free for seniors age 60 and over.

On New Year's Eve, Transit will be open their regular hours plus extended hours with last pickups at 2 am. There will be a dispatcher on duty all day and evening. Transit Manager Jill Drury said, "We will have four buses serving the county throughout the evening. Pre-scheduled rides will take priority, however we will accommodate as many same evening calls as possible."

 Toys, food, cash donated to local charities
Great Lakes Energy employees donated $4,338 along with food and toys to the Boyne Area Community Christmas program. Money was raised from a raffle and silent auction that included generous donations from employees and many local businesses. An additional $3,000 was donated to Community Christmas from Wolf Line Construction, a contractor for the cooperative's fiber internet subsidiary, Truestream. In total, Great Lakes Energy employees across eight offices and Wolf Line construction donated $12,407 to nine local charities throughout the cooperative's 26-county service area.

Water Street Cafe reaches into the past for its new name
 Water Street Cafe is changing its name to Sunnyside, which is a nod to a long-time restaurant of that name from days gone by.
The original Sunnyside restaurant was located on the sunny (north) side of Water Street, where Parkside Grill is now located. After a major fire in 1951, the restaurant relocated to 112 Water Street, the shady side of the street, in the building that is now the Peninsula clothing store. It remained there through the 1950s and 60s. After an ownership change to the Judkins family, it was renamed Mr. J's, which continued into the 1980s. Many current-day older residents who are part of the I grew up in Boyne City Facebook group remember Sunnyside as a popular after-school and lunch hangout for high school kids when the school was located close to downtown.
Current owners Jim and Kirt Ploe bought Water Street Cafe from Larry and Valerie Glasgow in May, and they want to put their own stamp on the restaurant to start the new year and the new decade. "It's a great opportunity to make it our own and show everyone what we can do," Kirt Ploe said. "We thank you all for being supportive and look forward to the future of Sunnyside." The restaurant's winter hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, serving breakfast all day and lunch starting at 11.

Minimum wage increases to $9.65 per hour on January 1
 Effective January 1, 2020, Michigan's minimum hourly wage will increase to $9.65 an hour. Annual increases will continue until the minimum wage hits $12.05 per hour in 2030. The law also allows an employer to pay 85 percent of the minimum hourly wage rate to employees aged 16 and 17, which is $8.20 per hour. Tipped employees may be paid $3.67 per hour; the tips received plus the wages paid must equal or exceed the minimum hourly wage of $9.65 and, if not, the employer must pay the shortfall. Cannabis, census and the blues are luncheon topics in 2020
 North Central Michigan College's Luncheon Lecture series for the winter semester will begin on Friday, January 17. A variety of topics will be featured, including the chemistry of cannabis, the 2020 census, blues music, the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald, redistricting, trash and where it goes, and Beethoven. All programs will be held on Fridays in the College Library Conference Center. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. and the program begins at noon.
January 17 - The Chemistry of Cannabis. Lake Superior State University's new cannabis chemistry program is the first academic degree program in the nation focusing on the quantitative analysis of cannabis-related compounds, including THC and CBD. Professors Benjamin Southwell and Steven Johnson will explain their program, the career potential for graduates, and the possible positive impact their program could have on the economy of the eastern Upper Peninsula.

David Mayfield Parade performs January 18th.
|
Freshwater Concert Venue has announced four performers who will be performing in concert in the new year. They include the David Mayfield Parade Americana/bluegrass band on January 18th, followed by Chastity Brown on Feb. 14, Steve Poltz on April 10 and Eliza Gilkyson on May 9.
David Mayfield may be one of the most original performers on the Americana scene, known for his bombastic stage presence as much as his virtuosic guitar talent and songwriting prowess. Those who have seen Mayfield perform with The Avett Brothers, Mumford & Sons, Jessica Lea Mayfield, or at Bonnaroo, have caught the charisma, the heart, and the comedy, and it's likely you'll come back for more.
This singer-songwriter, band leader, and Grammy nominated producer stepped out of the sideman shadows with his 2011 album, "The David Mayfield Parade." His follow-up, "Good Man Down," was self-released and funded with a surprising successful Kickstarter campaign that more than doubled its initial goal of $18,000. On the heels of that success, Mayfield has partnered with Compass Records, a label that Playboy Magazine calls "Nashville's hippest alternative label." "Strangers," Mayfield's first album with Compass, is a tour de force, stretching from the avant-garde to Mayfield's musical roots, which are buried deep in the bluegrass tradition from a childhood of touring with his family's band.

Fat & Flurrious Bike Race is part of Shorts series on Jan. 11
The third annual Fat & Flurrious Bike Race returns for 2020 on Saturday, January 11th with a new partner. This will be the first race in the Short's Brewing Fat Bike Series. Fat & Flurrious is a winter fat bike race that starts in front of Stiggs Brewery & Kitchen in downtown Boyne City and flows around the groomed single-track and hiking trails at Avalanche Mountain. Just like previous years, the course is condition-dependent. Bad snow = shorter course, great snow = longer course. The Open category, which will be two loops around Avalanche, will finish between 1.5-2.5 hours. The Sport Category will only ride one lap and will finish between 50 minutes-1.5 hrs. Only the open category counts towards Shorts' overall points. The event is also a fundraiser for Top Of Michigan Mountain Bike Association to build new mountain bike trails. Register here.
Stiggs hosts the after-race parking lot party, which coincides with their third anniversary. They will have large heated tents full of fun and entertainment by the Lonely Lovers and Lavender Lions. They invite you to make your best chili recipe in their first annual Chili Cook-Off with public voting and tasting beginning at noon. All entry fees will be donated to the Good Neighbors Food Pantry of Boyne City. Limited to 12 entries.

Farmers Market is on Christmas vacation this Saturday
The Boyne City Farmers Market will be on Christmas this Saturday, December 28th. The market resumes January 4th in the lobby of City Hall and continues from 9 a.m. to noon each Saturday. This year-round Farmers Market is packed full of beautiful produce, greens, homemade goodies and so much more.

 Loanable Nature Backpack Program is a fun free resource from Conservation District
A fun free resource for this time of year is the Loanable Nature Pack from the Charlevoix Conservation District. Created with the help of Thrivent Charitable Group and local resident Susan Vrondran, this resource is available to loan from the district's office in Boyne City any time of year. Get out and explore the many natural areas Charlevoix County has to offer; we have trail maps too. A pair of Tubbs snowshoes and walking sticks (to reduce stress on the knees) can be loaned out together or separately. The backpack has fun survival and exploration items to enhance your outing. Boyne City High School alum William Raveau will perform in concert in at Freshwater Gallery & Concert Venue at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27. Enjoy an evening of Christmas songs and songs from his upcoming album. Tickets will be available at the door but availability is not guaranteed. VIP tickets include early seating and a champagne reception before the concert.
William Raveau is a Boyne City High School graduate now performing and residing in New York City. During his time in Boyne City, he was seen in a number of BCHS Drama productions and the Little Traverse Civic Theatre and Bay View Music Festival. After performing in roles and receiving a BFA in Musical Theatre from Oakland University, he moved to New York City in pursuit of an acting career. During his two years in NYC, he was seen in cabarets in venues like the Laurie Beechman Theatre and The Duplex, as well as in Frankenstein the Musical, making his off-Broadway debut at the historic St. Luke's Theatre.

Stiggs Brewery to host Pint and Paint on January 9th
Stiggs Brewery's next Pint and Paint party is scheduled for Thursday, January 9th from 6-9 p.m. in the basement of the brewery. Instruction will be the "Art of Mandala Drawing," using simple tools to create beautiful designs and patterns. Lexie Brummeler will walk you through the process of painting a beautiful mandala on a stone and Sue Metzger help you create a wonderful mandala on canvas. You will be able to take home two beautiful pieces of art. All materials will be provided and registration includes a drink of your choice for $25. Profits will go to the Charlevoix Area Humane Society to help fund some much-needed projects, including a small surgical suite to spay and neuter strays and a new HVAC system. THE SEARCH FOR ANSWERS following personal tragedies will be probed at Lifetree Café on Potluck Sunday, Dec. 29 at 6:30. The Lifetree event, titled "Why, God? When Personal Tragedy Doesn't Make Sense," features an original film depicting the true story of Thomas Vander Woude, who found his son struggling for his life after a backyard accident. According to Lifetree Café representative Craig Cable, "When tragedy strikes, many people question how God could allow such suffering. This Lifetree program addresses this question head-on."
