State of the Church Meeting:
Let Love Be Our Aim
November 10, 11:45am in the Sanctuary
Join us for an update on The United Methodist Church, and celebrate what God is doing through Hennepin Avenue UMC. Hear our congregational goals and financial updates–plus an update on Koinonia Retreat Center, and a preliminary budget for 2020.
So that everyone can attend the State of the Church Meeting, both Progressive Christianity and Making Sense classes will not meet on Sunday, November 10.

Parenting for LYFE
November 17, 11:15am in the Social Hall
Parenting for LYFE is an open, drop-in group that meets monthly to discuss all things parenting. We welcome the wisdom of parents with children of all ages. After enjoying brunch as a family, parents are invited to stay in the Social Hall to participate in our monthly discussion topic, while kids will enjoy music class in Room 105, led by retired music teacher Patricia Rice. This month, we will look at how a moving child is a learning child. Everyone knows that a healthy diet is important for a growing child, but did you know that physical activity is absolutely essential for brain development?

Young Adult Care Packages
Hennepin loves young people! Each year we send care packages to our 18-22 year olds to remind them we are thinking of them whether they are studying, working, taking a gap year or something else! We are accepting donations of small items that may be helpful or fun for them to receive – mints, chocolate, pens, gum, cough drops, chapstick, post it notes, tea or hot cocoa packets, instant soup mix, notes of encouragement, etc.
Collection boxes are in the East entry and donations should be at the church by November 23.

Meet the Artist: Anita White

The Fine Arts Team is pleased to host two Meet-the-Artist Receptions for our current exhibits of works by Anita White. Meet Anita and hear about her artistic process and inspiration. Her works will continue to be on display through the end of November. Free and open to all!

Pub Theology

All are welcome at Pub Theology. Every third Wednesday of the month, the young adult ministry hosts a "spirited' conversation from 6-7 pm at Sisyphus Brewing. These casual, "come as you are conversations," are a great way to find deeper faith community. Invite a friend to join you, and learn more at

The Angel Tree is Back!
November 24-December 8, in the East Entry
Every year Hennepin members practice extravagant generosity by purchasing gifts for refugee children who are new to Minnesota. Visit the Angel Tree in the East Entry to check out an angel ornament. Then purchase gifts for your angel, and remember to return your ornament and your unwrapped gifts by December 8.

End-of-Year Giving
Giving at year-end enables you to complete your 2019 pledge, consider an additional gift to Hennepin, pre-pay on a 2020 operating pledge, or complete payment on a Steps of Faith campaign pledge. For tax purposes, allow ample time to complete your gift transactions and save all receipts and acknowledgments.

Instruct your IRA administrator to send a check directly to Hennepin, postmarked by Dec. 31.

Thanksgiving/Commitment Sunday

Charge Conference

A charge conference will be convened on November 24 at 11:30am in the Sanctuary for the purpose of setting clergy compensation for 2020. This charge conference is required by The United Methodist Book of Discipline. Child care will be available. All members are encouraged to attend.

Interfaith Thanksgiving Worship Service

St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral

Join in solidarity with the Twin Cities Interfaith Community to celebrate God’s generosity and to express our gratitude in story and song.
This annual event is shared among the downtown Jewish, Christian, and Islamic faith communities of Minneapolis, whose clergy gather throughout the year for shared learning, mutual support, and common mission. This is an opportunity to bring those communities together in recognition of the many ways we’re bound together in life, work, and witness. Don't miss one of the most moving and beautiful traditions of our downtown interfaith community!
This year’s event will be hosted by Saint Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral and our preacher will be Imam Makram El-Amin of Masjid An-Nur in North Minneapolis.
Doors open at 9:00 am! Experience the beauty of St. Mark’s historic worship space. Walk the Labyrinth in the Bishop Henry Whipple Chapel.
All are welcome--bring friends and family to this open and comfortable gathering.

Family Advent Festival

Join us for the Hennepin Kids Family Advent Festival in the Social Hall. Gingerbread creations, holiday ornaments, and so many cookies! Cost is $20/family. Your registration includes lunch and 6 dozens cookies that you will bake, decorate, and take home. Please bring a donation of baking supplies for Groveland Food Shelf. Come to Hennepin Marketplace and see the world of good that the Outreach Ministries of Hennepin have been promoting. Support this work by purchasing crafts and goodies from across the world--some exotic, some familiar, all beautiful. Wander through Carlson Hall before and after worship to peruse the offerings and discover ways to get involved in supporting our neighbors in Minneapolis and around the world.

Adulting 101

Adulting 101 is a fun casual way for young adults to engage in topics they care about. Each session features a topic expert, an opportunity to discuss the day's topic, and a chance to connect with other people with shared interests. On December 8, we'll discuss how to manage Christmas expenses on a limited budget.

Koinonia Conversations Update
We are pleased to announce that the Koinonia Legacy Task Force has been formed and is comprised of representatives from all standing committees and Core Practice teams.
The purpose of this task force is to develop a recommendation for how funds from a sale of Koinonia will be used to further the ministry of Hennepin in ways that will move us forward in our mission. The task force has begun meeting. We will keep the church membership informed as developments arise.

A Passion for Drawing:
Musings in the Moment
An Exhibition of Artworks by Anita White
“When difficulties arise… drawing is a way to find empathy and humor.” –Anita White
The Hennepin Avenue UMC Fine Arts Committee is excited to present the art of Anita White for our upcoming exhibit in Carlson Hall, on display October 24 through November 31. You will have two chances to meet the artist and ask questions about her work–details coming soon!
White graduated in 1974 with honors from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and lives in South Minneapolis near Minnehaha Falls. Her time living on an Irish island for three and half years created a deep sense of telling the story of places and people through drawing. These feelings shaped her travels to Mexico and Romania, which also inspired her art work. Early travels to Spain in 1969 and later in 1987 sparked a love of drawing flamenco which continues to the present day.
Drawing has also been a way for White to process and bear witness to life’s deeper moments. She drew her way through the care-taking of her parents and her brother’s mental health challenges. White created dozens of
pen and watercolor sketches in ambulances, hospital rooms, and in the emergency department waiting room.
She drew, she said, through “panic, anxiety and healing”–which included drawing
her late husband Josh’s medical issues. White calls this art “Narrative Medicine,” many examples of which are now on long-term display at Hennepin HealthCare. White explains:
“Drawing is a way to navigate daily life. A way to interact and honor others.
To find joy and beauty and the hidden humor that bubbles up in challenging moments.”

Christmas Concerts

There’s no better time for brass than the holidays! Resident Artists Copper Street Brass' popular holiday concerts celebrate the stories and sounds of the season performed with passion, humor, and virtuosity. Hear music ranging from classical to carols, childhood movies to rock and pop, and much more. Two performances at HAUMC:

Heading Home Hennepin Annual Meeting
November 20, 12:30pm in the Social Hall
Save the date! The Heading Home Hennepin Continuum of Care (CoC) Annual Meeting is just around the corner. This meeting is an opportunity for those who work to prevent and end homelessness in Hennepin County to come together, network, and learn from one another. This year we will focus on the collaboration it takes to serve the most vulnerable in our community. Keynote speakers:
- Commissioner Angela Conley has made housing and homelessness central to her campaign and has done so by centering the voices of those with lived experience.
- Mayor Jacob Frey has championed an agenda centered on increasing access to affordable housing including launching Stable Homes, Stable Schools and putting forward $40 mil. in city funding dedicated to affordable housing.
Following the keynote speakers, there will be two breakout sessions that will include the following topics:
- Operationalizing Racial Equity
- Expanding the housing toolkit
- What is new in strategies to prevent homelessness
- Reforming our shelter model

Sandwich Making for
The Dignity Center
November 24, 9:30am in the Art Gallery
Our Dignity Center needs your help making sandwiches for Homeless clients/guests this winter. It's a fun family event! Bring your choice of the following : prepared sliced luncheon meats (ham, beef, turkey), packs of cheese slices, or loaves of white or whole wheat bread to the gathering that morning, then help assemble the sandwiches. Come and spend 45 minutes helping and serving those less fortunate.

The Downtown Congregations to End Homelessness (DCEH) is now:
ALIGN MINNEAPOLIS
Align Minneapolis is committed to engage the community around us to address homelessness. Through learning, volunteer opportunities, community partnerships, community organizing, and development of effective strategies and programs.
We Align
- congregations across faith towards a common goal
- direct services with the needs of the community
- those who are housed with people who have lived experiences of homelessness
- state, city, and county laws and funding with our values
- our knowledge of homelessness with facts and experiences
How we take action
- INSPIRE - Call people to take action based on religious values
- EDUCATE - Strengthen awareness of the issues of homelessness and appropriate solutions
- ADVOCATE - Build the public will for policy change
- SERVE - Coordinate delivery of services among congregations
They are asking people to contact the Hennepin County Commissioners and demand minimum standards for the services and care shelters provide to people staying there. To learn more about this, go to

On the first and fifth Sunday afternoons of each month, feed our hungry neighbors at Community Meals.
