Dear Neighbor,
As the holiday season is upon us, I remain thankful for the opportunity to serve the residents of Claremont, Claremont Village, Concourse, Concourse Village, Highbridge, Mount Eden, Morris Heights and Morrisania. I am proud of our partnerships together and our ongoing work to improve the lives of all residents and families who live, work and raise their children in District 16. Although great progress has been made, we have much work left to do to continue investing in our community.
During this month, we partnered with community groups to host toy giveaways with Bronx Care, the 42nd Precinct, Bridge Builders, the Carpenters Union, Help USA, Transit District 11, the New York Yankees, Future Star Productions, Sheridan Academy, DFOY, Health First and Claremont Neighborhood Center, to name a few. It is during this time that we are reminded of our responsibility to help those in need and we are thankful that hundreds of toys were provided to our children during the holiday season.
We recently lost a pillar in our community with the passing of Carmen Vega-Rivera last week. Carmen was a resident of 888 Grand Concourse for nearly 40 years, was a champion for housing, a longtime leader of CASA Bronx, the Right to Counsel Coalition, and did work with the East Harlem Tutorial Program, the Bronx Museum of the Arts and was the founder of Atabey Collaborative, which provides development assistance for not for profits and arts institutions. She spent her life advocating for safe, stable and affordable housing, universal rent control, rent regulation, reforming Bronx Housing Court and most recently, played an instrumental role in the passage of Right to Counsel, the State’s Housing and Stability Act of 2019. We are a better and stronger community thanks to the commitment, compassion and tireless efforts of Carmen Vega-Rivera. We express our condolences and prayers of comfort, healing, peace and strength to her family, friends, neighbors, CASA family, East Harlem family, Loisada family and all who knew and loved her. May she Rest in Peace for a job well done.

"I am incredibly thankful for a long working relationship with Carmen that spanned over ten years. I have fond memories of countless meetings, press conferences, rallies, and town halls that we attended on important housing issues.
Carmen was an important part of every housing issue, served as an active member of the Jerome Task Force and was never afraid to speak up and speak truth to power.
I am blessed to have known and worked with Carmen through the years. May her work speak for itself and we always remember her love of the Bronx. On behalf of District 16, we express our thoughts and prayers of condolence to her family, friends, neighbors, CASA family, RTC family and everyone who knew and loved her. In Carmen’s honor, we will keep her legacy alive through our continued work in the Bronx and NYC."

(Public Oversight of Surveillance Technology) Act

Council Member Gibson held a second hearing for
Intro. 0487, which would create a process to understand surveillance technology used by the NYPD & its impact on New Yorkers.

Passage of Intro. 1211 led by Council Member Salamanca
|
Council Member Gibson joined with her colleagues to pass Intro. 1211, which
requires that a percentage of dwelling units in housing development projects receiving city financial assistance be set aside for homeless individuals and families.

Expansion of Tenant`s Rights
|
Council Member Gibson is proud to announce five new zip codes included in the Right to Counsel Law! This expansion of legal representation for tenants facing eviction proceedings will cover more tenants in more neighborhoods across the five boroughs.

must submit a Council Application. The
FY2021
application will be posted on the Council’s website at this
location
on Thursday, January 2nd , 2020 and the submission deadline will be on Tuesday, February 18, 2020.
Also, please note that if an application is not submitted within the filing period, the community-based organization will not be eligible for funding.

NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea joined with Council Member Gibson as she recognized Police Officers from the 42nd , 44th, & 46th Precincts, Transit District 11, Police Service Area 7, Bronx Community College Public Safety, and 911 Police Communications Technicians at her Third Annual NYPD Appreciation Luncheon.

Update on 1515 Selwyn Avenue:
|
|
- Council Member Gibson recently joined with NYC Public Advocate Jumaane Williams as he released the NYC Worst Landlords list. Council Member Gibson, along with CASA Bronx, visited 1515 Selwyn Avenue after the gas was restored after 14 months, to access the building.
- The landlord, Abdul Kahn, is number four on the Worst Landlords list, and although the gas was restored, tenants continue to experience leaks and other problems in this building.
- Council Member Gibson looks forward to working with the Public Advocate, CASA and tenants to demand the Administration steps up its enforcement in this building as residents and families deserve much better!
