Happy Holidays from Maggie Malick Wine Caves!
News from the Winemaker
Notes from Maggie
Everything from the 2019 harvest is now in barrels and tanks. Of the 15 varieties of grapes that are grown on the estate, all are now quietly aging in their barrels. I am really excited about the 2019 vintage! It will be an exceptional year for high quality wines. The 2019 white wines will be bottled in April 2020 while most of the red wines will not be bottled until 2021. For the first time ever, we made a Petit Verdot Port-style wine. The PV Port is aging in bourbon barrels to give it more depth and flavor. Everyone is asking "when are you going to bottle the port"? It will likely age for at least a year because it takes time for the flavors from the bourbon barrels to integrate with the port.

To celebrate, we are having a "Name the Port" contest - remember, you can not call it a port if it's made in the U.S. so be creative! Details to be announced later, so put on your thinking caps!

Did you like the Duet and Tannat-Viognier? These were inspirations from our visits to Uruguay. This winter we are taking our third trip to Uruguay to gain more inspirations and ideas for our wine blends. It also is a nice break from our cold winters when we get to visit the southern hemisphere during their summertime and watch their harvest preparation.
News from the Vineyard
Notes from Mark
2019 grapes were the highest quality we ever picked. There was virtually no rot with very even ripening. This year Mother Nature was our friend! After the first big Fall frost in late October, the vines lose their leaves and the plants start shutting down for the winter. Once the plant shuts down, the vineyard crew beings rough pruning. It takes our vineyard crew of 5, three to four months to prune the 30,000 vines on the estate.

Did you know we have 32 pieces of farm equipment that have a starter and a battery? Winter time is when we try to do most of the preventive maintenance so we're ready to roll in the Spring time.
