Republic Elementary Families and Employees,

We’re reaching out in light of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) most recent release of information regarding the coronavirus disease 2019, COVID-19. Take note, there are no cases in Missouri at this point. The goal of this message is to provide information about the preventative steps the district is currently taking and also steps that families can take to prevent illness.

As a reminder, the coronavirus disease 2019, COVID-19 is a new coronavirus strain that causes mild to severe upper-respiratory tract illness. The most common symptoms reported are fever, cough and trouble breathing. You can learn more at the CDC website: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html. Additional resources are listed below as well.

The first case was detected in December 2019 in China. In the large majority (about 80%) of cases symptoms are very similar to the common cold and have been mild in nature. Those being more negatively impacted are elderly individuals with additional health conditions. However, because it is a new health concern experts are still working hard to determine causes and find solutions.

Because symptoms are very closely mimicking those of the common cold and flu, health experts are suggesting very similar and basic hygiene practices we can all implement to reduce the risk of getting this virus and others.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Avoid close contact with others
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands
  • Clean and disinfect objects and surfaces
  • Stay at home away from others if you are sick

We want to assure parents that as a district we are closely monitoring developments with the help of health experts including our state and local health departments. In addition to collaborating outside of the district with these experts we are collaborating internally to make sure the most effective cleaning practices and products are being utilized to help combat illness. It’s important to note that this is a rapidly evolving situation and we will continue to stay informed and be ready to adjust practices if and when needed.
