10 THINGS I’VE LEARNED FROM THE JACKSON COMMUNITY SINCE BECOMING SUPERINTENDENT OF JPS
  1. The transformation of Jackson Public Schools is vital to the City of Jackson’s transformation, as well as the state's.
  2. This city has a really big heart. The community cares about the city, its neighborhoods, the families and our children. They want to see us succeed in a very real way.
  3. The Mississippi Department of Education is not our enemy. The near takeover of JPS has given us a new lease on life. There is a renewed commitment to excellence and an urgency to succeed.
  4. Real and dramatic change is extremely difficult, and it takes time, but it’s essential.
  5. There’s great talent in JPS. Our team is incredibly committed to their craft and getting better over time.
  6. Education is not just about content, knowledge, and skills. Physical and mental health, community engagement, and social services are critical to student success.
  7. Partnerships take work, especially if they are going to be strategic. Just because you don’t have the support you need right now doesn’t mean that you can’t have it. Name it. Develop a plan. Build relationships. Communicate what you need and what you do not need.
  8. Although we are truly grateful for the passage of the $65 million-dollar bond, the needs for improvement to our schools and facilities go far beyond that amount. Still, we’ll work hard to be good stewards of these funds and the improvements we can realize right now.
  9. You have to let some things go. You can’t do it all at once, and certainly not do it all well.
  10. We don’t have time for, nor the luxury, of failure. This is life or death. We carry the weight of our scholars’ futures with every important decision we make.
