DUAL ENROLLMENT, CLEP, AP- WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

College options and definitions can get confusing. Here is a quick reference guide regarding Dual Enrollment, CLEP, and AP Testing.
Dual Enrollment is taking a college course, from a college, while still a high school student. Dual enrollment courses cannot be substituted for coursework here at Covenant and do not appear on our transcript. The college will provide their own separate transcript. This transcript, along with the Covenant transcript, can be sent to colleges for admission consideration. Depending on the course(s) and the accreditation of the college the dual enrollment is completed from, the course(s) may be used to satisfy course requirements in a future college degree program. If you are interested in taking a dual enrollment course, see Jennifer Daniels for information.

CLEP is a subject area test that, if passed, counts as college credit for a college level course. A list of colleges that offer/ accept CLEP scores can be found  here. CLEP is a great way to save both money and time if you have mastered certain subjects.

Students can take AP (Advanced Placement) exams in selected subject areas. Depending on the score, the exam, and the college a student will be attending, college credit may (or may not) be awarded. It is best to discuss AP exams with prospective colleges and decide if taking an AP exam will be advantageous.
CLASS ASSIGNMENTS FROM THE COLLEGE COUNSELOR

Each month, students are encouraged to complete small tasks in order to prepare for the college application process. Tasks are different for each grade level. Doing small tasks each month will hopefully reduce the amount of stress and college prep workload for students during their Senior year.

ACT TO OFFER SECTION RETAKES STARTING FALL 2020

Exciting news for future ACT test takers! Starting in fall 2020, students will have the option of taking a selected section of the test, instead of the entire test again. This will help students by allowing them to focus on improving individual section scores and not waste brain power, time and energy on sections with sufficient scores.

FAFSA is a required tool to potentially qualify for a government-sponsored grant or loan. Many scholarships, including non-need-based scholarships, also require a student and their parent(s) to complete the FAFSA.

Both students and parents will need to create a pin number to access FAFSA. Use this link to register for a pin. You will need your student's social security number (or other government-issued number) and last year's tax returns to complete the process.

If you would like assistance completing the application, please make an individual, confidential appointment with Jennifer Daniels.

SENIORS- TIME TO THINK ABOUT THE MENINGITIS VACCINE

Most colleges require incoming freshmen to have a current meningitis vaccine or a vaccine waiver on file. There are two types of meningitis vaccines. A follow up booster may be required. Check with your prospective college to see which type they require. If you choose to vaccinate, you may want to consider getting these shots over the upcoming holidays to avoid missing school and to have enough time to schedule the potential follow up booster if needed. Many colleges will not allow students to register for college courses without the meningitis vaccine or vaccine waiver.
