The Portal's Health Care Collection consists of over 75 studies and reports on the health status of immigrants and the challenge of providing equitable care and services to them. Among topics covered are: the "healthy immigrant effect," the prevalence of PTSD among arriving immigrants and refugees, and how health outcomes for immigrants and their children change over time and why. The importance of "cultural competency" in the delivery of equitable health care services to immigrants is also a major theme. Many researchers prefer a "systems approach" to cultural competency, and some argue for the use of other terms, such as "cultural humility" or "diversity competence." A number of authors focus on "best practices" for improving communication with LEP patients. Some studies examine the effects of heightened immigration enforcement on the physical and psychological well-being of immigrant populations in general, as well as on immigrants held in detention. Other studies look at the impact of proposed changes to the public charge rule on immigrant utilization of public health programs. Another strand of research traces the vital and growing role played by immigrants in delivering healthcare services, as physicians, nurses, and personal care workers.
