This afternoon, I had the pleasure of accompanying Sherry Kramer, Continental Development Corporation, to the Celebration of Community Awards luncheon. This luncheon was created in 2008, by the Kiwanis Club of Torrance, to recognize and thank the many non-profit organizations which are so important to the community.

Metropolitan Water District (MWD) of Southern California recently held a community Leaders Water Briefing in which several Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce members were in attendance.

Jeff Kightlinger, General Manager of MWD provided an update on regional water issues. Topics included water recycling, desalination, pulling of resources all in an attempt to prepare, manage and build for the future.

State Senator Ben Allen, District 26, provided several remarks including the impact of climate change and how it is becoming more pronounced. Senator Allen also addressed drinking water contaminants, voluntary agreements and self sustainability.

Newsbreak Live:  Torrance Experiences Cyber Attack To City's Servers
TORRANCE, Calif., March 1, 2020 – At 2:30 a.m., computer systems at the City of Torrance experienced a digital compromise interrupting email accounts and server function. Safety operations continue to have access to communications. However, certain city business services are compromised.

The Transit store opening will be delayed until tomorrow at noon. City libraries will remain open during regular business hours.

Government agency cyber experts are currently investigating the source of the attack. Staff is working with the appropriate agencies to resolve all issues. Public personal data has not been impacted.

Counting California in the 2020 Census
California is preparing for the next federal census, which will begin April 1. It’s part of a survey the U.S. Census Bureau conducts every 10 years to figure out how many people live in the country. The accuracy of the count is important for two reasons: First, it is used to assign the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives. Second, census figures are used to direct billions of federal dollars to state and local governments — so an undercount could cost California money. Read More
