Canadian Hand - Made Gifts & Souvenirs
From Coast to Coast
Greetings! :

March is here and with it, spring is just around the corner. Because of March break, there are lots of happenings in the downtown for kids & parents to do. From skating on outdoor ice rinks to the Brier to Film festivals, Kingston is the place to be. Between all those activities, drop into Cornerstone to warm up and do a little shopping for some lovely Canadian hand-made gifts! At this time of the year there are lots of people looking for appreciation gifts and recognition gifts. Forget plaques & trophies! Give something meaningful, that they will treasure forever. We will help you choose something within your budget and package it beautifully so you look like a rock star! Customization is possible with many pieces that we have here if we are given enough lead-time.

This month's featured artist is our friend and neighbor, David Dossett. David has a special knack for wintry scenes; children skating and sledding (just plain having fun!) and local landmarks. He has even done one of Cornerstone! (We are truly honoured David) In time for the Brier, David has also made some great curling pieces. We invite you to come in and see all his great work & maybe even take one of his joyful pieces home! (Don't forget to check out David's Downtown Shops... Martello Alley ("Kingston's Hidden Gem" and his new digs, "Martello On Brock").

Now that Lisa and the ladies here at Cornerstone have finished counting and getting together our year end, Lisa and I will be putting our heads together and getting down to some serious product ordering! We have already chosen a great selection of summer hats! We love hats and sometimes we end up buying 1 (or 2) for ourselves! We are always on the lookout for new and inspiring artists so if you know of any let us know! If you are looking for something in particular and we don't carry anything like it let us know that too.

We have some very exciting new & events to share that are happening n April & May! We are letting you know early so you can plan out your visiting schedule ahead of time

First off...On Saturday April 4, from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM, we have the Third Annual Golden Egg Scavenger Hunt. I know a lot of people participate in this one as it marks the beginning of spring! Stay tuned for details about participating stores on FB, Instagram & our website. For those of you who may be new to our scavenger hunts, there are participating retailers that have an item (in this case a golden egg), "visibly hidden" in their store. When you find the item you get signed off on the ballots we provide and at the end of the hunt all the ballots get collected to see who wins the prize basket of items. The basket consists of products, gift cards or experiences that have been donated by the participating retailers. The basket so far for this scavenger hunt is already valued over $300.00! You must visit ALL the locations in order to be eligible to be entered into the draw. It's a fun way to see stores that you may not have gone into previously, and do a little recon shopping for future gifts!! This is a family friendly event. Ready, Set... GO!

Our "Artists For The Earth" event will happen from Friday April 17 - Wednesday April 22. We have changed up the format slightly allowing for more participation. Instead of doing a "Silent Auction" we have re-thought and instead, we will be doing a raffle. Some of our lovely artists here at Cornerstone will be donating pieces. There will be 5 different price levels with ticket prices varying according to the value of the pieces donated. The raffle will be open to all and the more tickets you buy the greater your chances of winning. On Saturday April 18th, we will have various activities happening in the store that will be fun and get people in the spirit of the event. Earth Day is celebrating 50 years this year! 50 years of inspiring people that they can make a difference. It is a very well respected charity with initiatives world-wide. If we each do a little we can accomplish a lot. Let's join together and make a global impact.

On Saturday May 23, from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM, we will be hosting another paint day with Marissa Sweet. Marissa has been dazzling everyone on the TV show, "Landscape Artist of the Year". We are so very honoured to have this talented, funny and charming lady teach a a class. Spots are VERY limited. There are only 8 openings and one is already been taken! Everyone will be painting the same piece (and putting their own twist on it) and the great part is you will have it finished in 1 day!

From our heart to yours,
Penny & the staff at Cornerstone

Zentangle Classes
Zentangle is a meditative art form that uses a series of repetitive patterns to create unique pieces of art that may be completed within 20 -30 minutes. Zentangle can be taught to children (7 & up), adults and the elderly to help create focus, relaxation and the sheer joy of creating even if you "can't draw!"I am a certified Zentangle teacher and I will be happy to teach you this art form. Whether it's a formal class that we have or you gather a group of friends together and we schedule a class for you, Zentangle is for anyone! keep checking back on our website for when we have formal classes or call the store at 613-546-7967 for more information. Those coloring books that you see? A lot of those are based on Zentangle! Wouldn't it be great to create your own to colour?

If you want to join our FB group please click the link below. We accept beginners as well so please send us your tangles! I also put them up on our FB page & they sometimes make it to Instagram too! Every Tuesday is Tangle Tuesday where Post a new tangle I have done. Group members are encouraged to post their tangles too!

We have just started the group so that we can get together, people who like Zentangle here in Kingston. Join, Post & Share. We are working with coming up with a schedule where we can meet monthly at a the store to tangle and share ideas. We are open to ideas and just looking for a fun, relaxing way to hang out and do some Zentangle!

Looking Ahead.....
April will see us doing the Annual Golden Egg Scavenger Hunt on Saturday April 4, from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Mark your calendars and keep watching on FB, Instagram & our website for more details.....
April 17th - April 22, will be our Artists For The Earth event. There are times when we watch events like the fires in Australia and the devastating loss of wildlife, we instinctively want to help but just don't know how and feel helpless. We tearfully saw Koalas, Kangaroos and so many more animals being rescued and saw so many more dying. The answer is to not give up and to band together. If we each do a little together we can do a lot. So far we have 10 artists who are graciously donating works to be raffled. Please come down to the store between April 17th & April 22 to buy a ticket (or tickets ) on the pieces that you love. We will raise money that will go to Earthday.org to be distributed to their very important global initiatives that contribute to making the world a better place. Some of the artists that have said they are interested include Paula Bund, Karley Smith, Jessica Lin, Robert Knox to name a few. On Saturday April 18th we will be having some demos and other happenings for a fun day. Stay tuned for our April Newsletter for more details but mark your calendars now!
