CLASSES THIS SUNDAY
Sunday School classes begin at 9:10 a.m. Child care is available for children five and younger in the nursery.
Elementary School Children
The class will begin with music in the choir room and then go to Room 3 of the Education Wing for a Bible lesson using the Godly Play approach.
The class will continue to focus on Holy Communion.
The class will use material from Living Well through Advent 2019: Practicing Peace with All Your Heart, Soul, Strength, and Mind. All confirmed high school youth and adults are welcome to attend.

WEDNESDAY ADVENT DINNER AND WORSHIP SERVICE
On
December 18, Good Shepherd will offer dinner beginning at 5:30 p.m. followed by a brief worship service using Holden Evening Prayer at 6:30 p.m.
The menu on December 18 will be
Sloppy Joes, Baked Beans, and Coleslaw
with Gluten-Free, Vegetarian Option.
Volunteers are needed to bring salads and desserts.
Please, sign up by Monday, December 16 if you plan to attend the dinner or will bring something to share.

CALL PROCESS UPDATE
After numerous interviews and much prayerful deliberation, the Call Committee has identified and recommended a candidate to the congregation Council to be the "Primary Candidate" for pastor of LCGS. The Council will now meet with the candidate and vote on the committee's recommendation. If approved, information about the candidate will be shared with the congregation, there will be an opportunity for the congregation and candidate to meet,
and voting members of the congregation will then vote on whether or not to extend a call to this candidate.
We request your continued prayers, asking God's guidance in this important decision.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO WORK WITH OUR CHILDREN
The schedule for 2020 is being made and more helpers are needed to work with our children. Specifically, we need
nursery care workers (for children five and younger during the Sunday School hour and during the 10:30 a.m. worship service), and
story tellers and
door people for the elementary children's Sunday school class (the story teller uses the Godly Play approach to tell a Bible story and the door person supports the children in their learning during the class).

AN OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE THE CHURCH
Every Monday for a month a church member collects the trash from inside the church and takes it to the street for city pickup.
We currently have four months open for three eager volunteers - January, June, September, and December. You may pick your month and I will take the month that is left over. (Currently, I cover all four months, which is one reason I am writing this.)
You need to be at the church no later than 8:45 a.m. and allow 30-45 minutes to complete your task. A big plus is an opportunity to interact with our charming staff. If you want to avoid the staff, you need to arrive earlier than 8:45!
Don't miss out on this opportunity to perform an essential job! (We do not want to see trash piling up in the hallways.)

REVISED LCGS CONSTITUTION AND BYLAWS
The NC Synod Council unanimously approved the revised LCGS Constitution and Bylaws that had been approved by the congregation at our November annual meeting. It is now available on the LCGS web site with an effective date of December 11, 2019. In addition, the following new policies that resulted from the Constitution revision are also now posted to our web site with the same effective date: Mission Endowment Fund Policy, Memorial Garden Policy and Memorial Gifts Policy. QUARTERLY MINISTRY ROUNDTABLE MEETING
LCGS's last Quarterly Ministry Roundtable Meeting for 2019 is scheduled for
Wednesday, December 18, at 10:00 a.m. All committee chairs and Council members are asked to attend. If you are unable to do so, please ask someone from your committee to be there in your place. Please contact Jody Schuld (

HEARING LOSS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA MEETING
The next meeting of the Brevard Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) will be held at Good Shepherd on Saturday, December 14 at 1:00 p.m. The speaker will be Tony Davis, the Hard of Hearing Services Coordinator for the Division of Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DSDHH). He and Jessica Sanders, the Telecommunications Consultant with the Asheville DSDHH Regional Center, will discuss captioned phones, amplified phones, personal amplifiers and home alerting devices that DSDHH Equipment Distribution Services Program provides. Tony will also discuss new state of the art technology that the EDS program has started providing in the hearing aids that it distributes.
Chapter members, hearing professionals, and anyone interested in learning about hearing loss and hearing solutions are welcome. The room will open at 12:30 p.m. so people can sign in, browse the free literature, grab a snack, and meet others. Captions will be provided.

Nancy Cummins had surgery on December 11 to help with chronic pain.
John Swancara
was briefly treated at Mission ER on December 8 and discharged home.
Nora Johnson is currently hospitalized at Transylvania Regional Hospital and is being treated for an infection. Nora would welcome visitors or telephone calls (cell: 828-384-9062).

BREVARD CROP HUNGER WALK 2019 UPDATE
Here is an email from organizers of this year's walk, with information about the total amount raised to support efforts to end hunger globally and locally.
Dear Friends,
Here is the final figure for our 2019 [Brevard] CROP Hunger Walk: $15,129.77. We met our goal of $15,000! It took everyone's contribution including the pennies to reach that goal! It is gratifying to think about the differences this amount will make both in the world and here in Transylvania County. The share for Sharing House is $3,782.44. It is truly wonderful to be a part of the Brevard CROP Hunger Walk!

WORSHIP AT LIVING WATERS
On December 1, eight people from Good Shepherd traveled to Cherokee, NC to worship with the congregation of Living Waters Lutheran Church. Bill and Laurie Johnson, Jackie Jenkins, Ellen Dozier, Isa and Victor Emaus, Rich Handschin and Janice Leibe reflected on their time with the people of Living Waters and want to share their thoughts with all of you. This is the second part of a four-week series.
I like the fact that some of the service is done in the Cherokee language, written out phonetically so all in the congregation can follow. I also like the fact that tribes other than Cherokee are represented in the congregation and participate equally. It testifies to a larger sense of community and church.
I like their practice of having members of the congregation offer songs and other reflections as part of the offering: it speaks more to the idea that we offer ourselves, rather than taking up a collection of money.
I like that members of the congregation are invited to reflect, ask questions and comment about the sermon and what it means for daily living.
The 'Prayers of the People' can get long; but I like that everyone present joins together in the prayer circle and everyone is invited to offer their own prayers out loud for concerns that they have.
I am impressed that this relatively small congregation feeds 24,000 people a year from their pantry. (It is also a sad commentary on our country that so many need pantries such as this one to put food on their table.)
Christ is clearly present in that this congregation actively lives out its faith as it feeds and ministers to the community (both to tribal and to other surrounding communities).

CHRISTMAS ORGAN RECITAL SERIES
First United Methodist Church is continuing a Christmas Organ Recital series on December 13 and 20 beginning at 12:30 p.m. The organists will be Vance Reese and Jeremy Roberts, respectively.
