Your Union Hard at Work
Building reps from each of the nine school buildings met on Tuesday, August 28th, at the NYSUT office in Woodbury to discuss important issues facing our teachers this year. The Board of Directors discussed unionism in the post-Janus era, new representative training, and expectations for the year ahead.

This year, the HCT will participate in AFT's Teacher-Leader Program (represented by Stephanie Sullo and others), establish a New/Early Career Member Committee and continue to affect social change in our community. Be sure to attend your building-level meeting to stay informed about these initiatives and how you can get involved in upcoming events.

Welcoming Our New Members
On Thursday, August 23rd, the HCT executive board welcomed 24 new teachers for the 2018-2019 school year. HCT president Tom Glenn discussed the benefits of unions, the value of an involved membership and the challenges facing teachers and unions today. He explained Vote-Cope contributions and the significance of political action on the local, state and federal levels. Glenn also stressed the importance of financial planning early in one's teaching career.
George Tebbitt and Marc Zimmerman from Plan Member Services presented about contributing to a 403(b) to prepare for their future financial security.

We are pleased to welcome these teachers into our HCT family and we wish them the best of luck this year and beyond!
Superintendent's Conference Day
Superintendent's Conference Day marked the beginning of the new school year for teachers and staff in Hicksville.  New Superintendent Marianne Litzman delivered a speech welcoming teachers and staff and Rosemarie Colletti introduced new staff members. New Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Anthony Lubrano shared the importance of Mental Health awareness and literacy in schools. Tom Glenn described HCT's initiatives for the year (Project C.H.A.N.G.E., AFT Teacher Leader Program and Phone Banking) and explained how members can get involved. Teachers and staff enjoyed sandwiches and salads from Roast Sandwich House in Hicksville before heading to their buildings to prepare for the new year .

How Hot is Your Classroom?
It's that time of year, and once again,  classroom temperatures are rising ! Overheated schools and colleges affect learning, waste energy and cost school employers money. And as bad as it is for students, overheating makes it harder for a teacher to teach and for staff to be productive.

Please click here to comment on the heat in your classroom. Your feedback is appreciated and will help in our ongoing efforts to address overheated work spaces and learning environments.

You may also download a Classroom Temperature Log to record and
report your findings. [ PDF |  Word].

Thank you!
