Deputy Board Chairman Dr. Rock Positano Advocates for Podiatry with White House Advisor Kudlow and Other Washington Contacts

Rock Positano, DPM, Deputy Board Chairman, left, presents Larry Kudlow, the chief White House economic advisor, with the APMA fact sheet about the threat to the podiatric profession posed by the CMS proposal and, shows his appreciation! Mr. Kudlow said he would bring the issue of reclassification of podiatrists to the attention of Alex Azar, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
At the most recent Board meeting in August, Michael Trepal, DPM, VP of Academic Affairs and Dean of Academic Affairs, told the Trustees that CMS (the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) has proposed altering the reimbursement methodology for podiatrists, which would alter reimbursement for podiatric services; podiatrists could see reimbursements reduced 30-35% per Medicare patient, he said. . . . Class of 2022 Receives White Coats
In a ceremony both solemn and joyous, members of the Class of 2022 donned their new white coats in front of proud families and friends at the New York Academy of Medicine on August 22nd. The 78 first-year students had been welcomed with a Hudson River cruise on the previous Saturday, went through orientation on the Monday, and on Wednesday, slipped into the tangible symbols of the medical profession they seek. ... Marianne Surasi, BSN, DPM ('90), DABMSP
Clinical Instructor
"My podiatry degree has allowed me a great deal of  flexibility over the years," Dr. Surasi states, and her journey as a podiatrist demonstrates a world of possibilities.
First, Dr. Surasi studied nursing, earning an associate's degree in nursing from St. Francis College and then a BSN from the College of Staten Island. She worked as a staff nurse for about six years after graduation, and became interested in podiatry through a podiatrist who worked at the same hospital.

Summer is for International Collaborations at NYCPM
This summer, NYCPM hosted an international array of professionals.
In mid-summer, 10 podologists from Spain came to NYCPM for a week of study in cadaver surgery in the College's Bako Anatomy Lab, under the direction of Professor Ricardo de Bengoa Vallejo, DPM ('95), PhD, and Professor Marta Los Iglesias, PhD of Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, with Michael J. 2018 Residency Fair Was ... Big!

Late July's 2018 Residency Fair was a big success - big in welcoming 63 residency programs from 14 states to NYCPM! Eight-seven students from the Class of 2020 attended the fair, aided by 23 volunteers from the Class of 2021 as well as three volunteers from the January Class of 2022.
Many of the program tables were staffed by NYCPM alumni, a big help to the third-years who seek on-the-ground information. Kudos to the organizers (see photo) and all volunteers and many thanks to event sponsor Bako Diagnostics. Photos

Leifer Invited to Review
 Zev Leifer, PhD
, Professor of Pre-Clinical Sciences, has been invited to be a reviewer for the American Journal of Clinical Pathology. The article for review is in the field of Digital Pathology/Virtual Microscopy, which has been an area of his recent professional activity, including teaching a course using those techniques. He says he has already submitted his review to the Journal.

Health and Wellness Expo 2018, University Eye Center's open house, at SUNY College of Optometry in midtown Manhattan on Saturday August 4.
