Lupus: Signs and symptoms to watch for

Common symptoms of lupus
Lupus is an autoimmune disease that affects 1 in 1,000 Canadians.  The disease mistakes the body's healthy tissues for intruders. When the immune system fights the healthy tissues, it causes inflammation and creates the symptoms of lupus.

Dr. Lianne Butterfill, a physician in our Family and Community Medicine Program, discusses key aspects of this disease.

When medical terms are confusing

The goal of the Choosing Wisely Canada campaign is to help clinicians and patients engage in conversations about unnecessary tests and treatments and make smart and effective choices to ensure high-quality care.
Many people may not be familiar with certain medical words, especially if you are hearing them for the first time in a doctor's office.

"Patients and their families need to be empowered to make the best decisions they can, and that means fully understanding what is being communicated to them by their health care providers," says Family Physician  Dr. Karen Hershenfield
