EVENTS

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is soliciting public input on alternatives developed to provide enhanced Fairfax Connector bus service in the Reston and Herndon areas, including connections to the future Metrorail Silver Line Phase 2 stations in Herndon and Reston.

The service alternatives were developed based on input received through community and stakeholder engagement earlier this year and technical analysis. After this round of public engagement, FCDOT staff will develop a preferred service plan to provide better access to destinations, improved travel times, increased schedule reliability, and more dependable service. The community will have an opportunity to review and comment on the preferred service plan in early 2020.

Two community meetings were held in October and the third will be held on November 2.

November 4, 18: McLean CBC Task Force Meetings

The County has been working on a study of the McLean Commercial Business Center (CBC), more commonly known as downtown McLean. The community-driven study will be used to update the Comprehensive Plan, which will guide future planning and development, including land uses, development intensities, transportation, public facilities, and design standards.

The study began in June 2018 with three well-attended community workshops conducted by Streetsense, the consultant hired by the County. The community's input from these three sessions shaped the draft plans that were presented at two open houses last fall. Additional community input on the draft plans was solicited at the open houses and a meeting on the Final Vision Plan was held in December.

Since then, the study's task force, which is comprised of McLean residents and civic group representatives, has been working with County staff and the community to translate this vision into recommendations for changes to the Comprehensive Plan. The task force's monthly meetings are open to the public. Details on the next task force meetings are included below.

Stop the Bleed - Advanced First Aid Skills
Learn how to stop life-threatening blood loss

Launched in October of 2015 by the White House, Stop the Bleed is a national awareness campaign and a call to action. Stop the Bleed is intended to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives.

No matter how rapid the arrival of professional emergency responders, bystanders will often be first on the scene. A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes, so it is important to act quickly. Those nearest to someone with life threatening injuries are best positioned to provide first care.

The following sessions are now being offered:

November is National Family Caregiver Month

November is the National Family Caregiver Month, a time to celebrate and recognize the thousands of families who provide care for an older adult or an adult with a disability. In 2018, The Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services reported that 1 in 5 Virginians is a caregiver. The report stated that currently 1.8 million Virginians are over the age of 60, and this number is expected to increase to 2.3 million by 2030. The report added that 35 percent of the caregivers are adult children, and 13 percent are aging spouses.

As the nature of caregiving becomes more complex, family caregivers may face a significant financial and emotional burden, which in turn can lead to serious health problems. If you are a family caregiver of an older adult or an adult with a disability, the Department of Family Services, Adult & Aging division offers information, support, and resources to assist family caregivers. Some of programs offered include in-home care, respite services, caregiver support and consultation, bathing services, care management, as well as monthly webinars on caregiving topics.
