NAWIC Tucson Chapter 122
February / March 2021 News
Miss a Little . . . Miss A Lot
Tracy's Tidbits
A note from Chapter President, Tracy Miller, Global Roofing Group (f.k.a Roofing Southwest)

It's spring! It seems fitting and is encouraging to see that more business is opening locally and around the country. Having NAWIC events in three dimensions instead of the digital two-dimensional world we have been trapped in for the last year is super exciting!

Our next board meeting is on March 31st. A topic of discussion will be what can we do with the remaining portion of the year, and where and how can we make the greatest impact, and with what events.

**Just as a reminder, the board meetings are open to all local members 😊

A special thanks to Ann Vargas, Habitat for Humanity Tucson and Susan Kregar, Desert Lotus Group, who did a fabulous job with this year’s WIC.

This year’s WIC week was March the 7th through the 13th.
Despite the pandemic, this event was a success! The theme this year was “We Believe In YOU!”. This year ten ladies from Pima Community College were nominated to be highlighted during WIC Week. Please be sure not to forget to go the NAWIC Tucson website and read their bios, www.nawictucson.org. These ladies will impress you!

Faces of Fire
National Fire Protection Association in partnership with the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors launches a new safety campaign promoting electrical safety awareness.

The Faces of Fire/Electrical video series campaign tells the stories of people who were injured in electrical incidents both on the job and at home.

According to NFPA, 1,651 U.S. workers died as a result of electrical injuries from 2007 to 2016. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that 1,900 nonfatal occupational injuries related to electricity exposure were recorded in 2019.

Resources provided in this campaign are great for training, toolbox talks, company meetings, etc. Check out the information and resources on the NFPA website.

OSHA & COVID

The Department of Labor Office of the Inspector General published a report on March 2nd stating complaints made to OSHA during the Pandemic were up while the number of workplace inspections were down 50%.

DOL OIG reviewed complaint and inspection data from Feb. 1 to Oct. 26, 2020. OSHA received 23,447 complaints compared with 20,391 over the same span in 2019. The agency performed a little more than 13,000 inspections during that time in 2020 compared with 26,174 inspections over the same period in the previous year.

“As a result, there is an increased risk that OSHA is not providing the level of protection that workers need at various jobsites,” DOL OIG says.

DOL OIG made four recommendations, including the consideration of an emergency temporary standard related to COVID-19. An Executive Order signed by President Joe Biden on Jan. 21 directed OSHA and the Mine Safety and Health Administration to consider such ETSs and, if determined to be necessary, issue them by March 15.
