Autumn

Are you contemplating the fact that summer is slipping away? The time has gone fast, as it usually does. Although, our Unity understanding and belief teaches that each day is to be held in honor, no matter what transpires. Gratitude for these special "Indian Summer" days is held in my heart. Being in nature on the trails, on the bike path or listening to music in the great outdoors is inspiring. I call it Heaven on earth and I am so grateful for it. However, looking forward to a beautiful autumn and a glorious, white, Wisconsin winter isn't the worst of daydreams!
I see myself as a planner, a goal setter, even when I know I fall short sometimes. I also treasure my alone times when I can reset goals and be aware of all of my blessings. For many years, I have found the peace, the pleasure and inspiration of nature and, most of all, the spirituality of making a retreat.
During the weekend of November 9-11, St Anthony's Spirituality Center in Marathon WI is sponsoring a silent retreat entitled: Seasons of our Lives.  I plan to attend. The site, which many of us have called "Holy Ground", is a beautiful old monastery set on many wooded acres. Comfortable, private sleeping accommodations and delicious meals are the norm. Cost is $185 for the weekend.
Between now and then, there are many other offerings including: God So Loved the World, But Do We?, Serenity Retreat for Recovering Alcoholics, Beauty in a Broken World, and an Advent Day of Prayer. The list goes on into 2019. Please contact Jacquie Staebell for any further information.

Message from the Minister

Allow me to express my gratitude for your having chosen me as your new minister. Donna, Buster, and I are becoming more settled into our new home and city with each new day. We've discovered new grocery stores, restaurants, movie theaters, the library, the post office, and city hall (where we registered to vote). We finally made it to the Oakwood Mall and Sheels. I've even been able to find my way back to certain places without relying upon GPS! Many thanks to everyone who pitched in to help us unload the U-Haul truck. We felt especially blessed.

"So, how's it going?" you might wonder. Well, I'm having a blast! One of my Facebook friends and Unity colleagues posted, "Sure sounds like you're on vacation..." When I was a young child growing up in northwest Indiana, we would routinely go on vacation at a fishing resort in the Northwoods of Wisconsin.   Hence, I have an internal tendency to equate Wisconsin with vacation. I have many fond memories of those trips, as you can see from this photo (Yes, I was a Cubs fan).

With fall fast approaching, many of us have returned from our summer vacations. Donna and I took a 12-day vacation just before coming to Eau Claire knowing it would be awhile before we would be able to go on one. We would love to hear about your travels. If we take a look at the word, vacation, it has many meanings. Typically, we think of trips away from our home for a week or more where we visit interesting places. We also take vacations from certain activities, like serving on a board, team, or other activity. However, vacation also means the act of vacating.

When we vacate something we are making that something invalid.   So, when we vacate from negative, destructive mental tendencies, we are no longer allowing them to dominate our lives. We no longer have room for them in our consciousness. In Unity we call this process, denial. It's not that we deny the existence of these thoughts and feelings, it's just that we don't empower them anymore. The burning bowl ceremony is an example of using this tool in an active way.

Every time you find yourself dwelling on some situation that causes you distress, it's time to go on vacation! Observe it, feel the feelings surrounding it, and then consciously let it go and set it free from your life. Give it back to God, so to speak, and God will dissolve it. This makes more room inside of you for love and joy in your life, and, it will look like you're always on vacation.

Reverend Alden is available to support you through spiritual counseling, prayer, hospital and other visitation, weddings, funerals/memorials, christenings, and special blessings. His private church e-mail address is [email protected].
