Learning with the Dressmaker
Fashion designer Stacy Stube in the BMI's garment gallery.
Between 1870 and 1940, the garment industry employed 25 percent of Baltimore's workforce-- the largest employer in the Baltimore industrial sector at that time. After World War II, production in Baltimore declined as overseas manufacturers began creating similar products at cheaper prices.

On September 30, the BMI is excited to welcome fashion designer and entrepreneur Stacy Stube to the museum to host Starting Your Own Fashion Label, an apparel manufacturing workshop .

After working for seven years in London for brands such as Alexander McQueen, Burberry, Matthew Williamson, and Heidi Klein, Stube moved to Bali, Indonesia and seized the opportunity to fulfill her dream of building Elsa Fitzgerald--a fashion company that makes a positive social impact. Her brand's name was inspired by Elsa Schiaparelli, a 1920s designer, and The Great Gatsby author F. Scott Fitzgerald to embody its blending of vintage elegance with Balinese craftsmanship. Stube is currently designing and making her collection out of workspace located in Baltimore's iconic Bromo Clock Tower.

The apparel manufacturing workshop will take place inside our garment gallery which was designed to resemble an authentic 1929 sewing room in honor of the city's garment glory days. Stube plans to bring a small part of her own studio into the space for a little show and tell. Afterwards, participants will learn ways to develop their own stories through fashion, explore things to look out for when building a brand, and discuss how to begin with just an idea.

"Much of the industry has died away and this workshop is not just for designers, but also individuals who are just interested in how garments are made from an idea into a production line that arrives into stores," Stube says. "I hope that, in addition to attending the workshop, participants have a great deal of fun, make friends and connect with others looking to build a fashion brand, or find others that want to sew together."

Join us for the Starting Your Own Label apparel manufacturing workshop on Sunday, September 30 from 12 PM - 3PM. Tickets are $35 for BMI members and $45 for non-members. Grab your tickets today!

Impacting the Next Generation Worker
Students roleplaying in the Kid's Cannery program at the BMI.
When students visit the BMI they become oyster shuckers in our 1883 oyster cannery, build roller coasters using household items, become workers on a paper truck assembly line, and more. Each year, our education programs help teachers and students discover the connections between their classroom studies and Baltimore's industrial past and future.

As we look forward to having school field trips resume later this month, we are proud to announce that, during the 2017-2018 school year, 483 schools visited the BMI for field trips. As a result, we served 29,616 teachers, chaperones, and students who enjoyed 73,250 educational experiences. But, sometimes, the best way to judge our impact is by reviewing the feedback we get from students and teachers firsthand:

Students building and testing roller coasters.
"I had an amazing day because of you! I loved learning about all the different types of engineers, my favorite one was the mechanical engineer. I never thought I would like building a model roller coaster. Thank you so much for all you have done!" ~Maddie, student

"I had fun building using the materials and what we had around to build the model. I also enjoyed testing the model and moving up a harder step to challenge myself. ~Brenden, student

"We love this trip! The sessions are more than hands-on! Students' engagement and curiosity is over the top! Thank you again for making this our favorite trip of the year!" ~Ellen G., 3rd Grade teacher

It was hard getting the big wooden marble in the can. But, we worked together and we solved the problem! Maybe later I will be an engineer! I liked when you shouted "Workers!" It felt like I was one." ~Ruby, student
