Protecting food animal gene pools for future generations
The genetic diversity of livestock and poultry is dwindling, leaving one-third of the world's protein supply at risk to events such as weather extremes and disease outbreaks.

A new paper from the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology addresses the associated risks with reduced access to genetic traits, as well as what should be done to protect remaining breeds. According to the paper, "up to 25 percent of global livestock breeds are either at risk of being lost, or have already been lost."
The paper, Protecting Food Animal Gene Pools for Future Generations-A paper in the series on The Need for Agricultural Innovation to Sustainably Feed the World by 2050, is available for free download at https://www.cast-science.org/publications/

FMD vaccine bank remains ag industry priority
The U.S. hasn't seen an outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) for 90 years, and those in the agriculture industry want to continue that track record. However, if it does enter the U.S., the agriculture industry wants to take steps now to preserve exports as well as prevent the culling of millions of animals.
University of Wisconsin moves forward on Dairy Innovation Hub
Deans of three University of Wisconsin (UW) campuses heralded the final approval Oct. 2 by the Joint Finance Committee of plans for a Dairy Innovation Hub, a move that releases $45 million in funding to the UW System.
Farm groups praise EPA deal on RFS
The Trump Administration announced Friday that it is taking action to begin reversing the damage done to rural America by refinery exemptions from the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). The plan requires the Environmental Protection Agency to keep the statutory RFS volumes whole by prospectively redistributing exempted renewable fuel blending requirements to non-exempt refiners.
Farm Bureau offers dairy program recommendations
The American Farm Bureau Federation released a proposal for the future of U.S. milk pricing provisions and marketing order reform. The recommendations aim to bring more democracy and a more equitable program for all dairy farmers.

ADSA at World Dairy Expo

Once again, ADSA was at our regular exhibit spot at World Dairy Expo. Expo provides a great opportunity to share with producers, industry and international dairy leaders some of the things that ADSA does and the educational resources that we have available. Thanks to all who helped at the booth, all who visited and partners who helped share ADSA information at their displays in other Expo exhibit areas. We hope to see you at the 2020 World Dairy Expo.

Abstract submission site for 2020 ADSA Annual Meeting now open!

Visit
https://www.adsa.org/Meetings/2020-Annual-Meeting/Abstracts to submit your abstract. Submission instructions, quality standards, answers to frequently asked questions, and student competition guidelines are available on the page. There is no abstract submission fee.
Again in 2020-Platform Sessions. In a platform session, an invited speaker leads off a themed or topical oral session with a 30- or 45-minute talk, which is then followed by submitted abstract talks. This oral session type can result in higher levels of engagement of oral session submitters/presenters, while disseminating the most current research. Platform sessions provide a third oral session option, somewhere between a symposium and a general oral session. When submitting your abstract(s), be sure to look for platform sessions that may incorporate your research.
The deadline for abstract submission is February 20, 2020, at 11:59 pm (CST).
The  2020 ADSA Annual Meeting website will be updated frequently with the latest meeting information, so bookmark the site and visit often. Housing will open in November 2019, and meeting registration will be available in early February 2020.
The 2020 ADSA Annual Meeting scientific program will feature 1,200 oral and poster presentations from around the globe. Make sure yours is included, as 1,900 scientists from 50 countries meet in beautiful West Palm Beach, Florida. Benefit from symposia, workshops, and preconference events presented by the world's leading animal and dairy scientists. Topics include dairy food science, dairy production, animal health and well-being, animal and human nutrition, food safety, and production and management.
