May is Here!
This month there’s so much to celebrate, especially Mother’s Day when our overworked, overstressed MOMS should receive some special recognition and extra TLC! So, for Moms and even all of the other important women in your life, we have special tips and recipes that will be extra pampering - just for her. Plus, it’s National Women’s Health Month, so there’s even more reasons to incorporate healthy citrus into your days. As you may know, lemons are packed with vitamins and anti-oxidants, which will make us all feel more healthy and, well, zesty! Read on to see what we at Limoneira Ranch are celebrating and want to share with you this month. As always, we’re so grateful to have you here!

Limoneira's Latest &
Sustainability Update
Even though Earth Day may be behind us, Limoneira approaches every day with the environment at the forefront of its mission and work. Limoneira has been operating sustainably and environmentally consciously since 1893, which is one of the main reasons we have been able to provide to our valued customers … One World of Citrus! Following the pack just will not work if you want to be a global leader of citrus, but adapting innovative and forward-thinking practices sure will! This kind of approach and attitude has helped Limoneira become such a trusted and valued company on a worldwide scale.

One of the most exciting examples of providing cleaner, green energy is how Limoneira built one of the first and the largest solar panel ‘orchards’ in California. Today Limoneira has seven ‘solar orchards’ total, which not only powers its packing house with clean energy, but it also has reduced carbon dioxide emissions and contributes to Limoneira being carbon negative! Yes, negative – and that is a positive thing indeed! The Company has implemented so many additional environmental initiatives, including the Limoneira water processing facility, which recycles water without the use of harsh chemicals. Plus, caring for our orchards via an IPM (Integrated Pest Management) system, as well as our grounds via (miniature) sheep to naturally keep weed control down – and supplying their wool to local artisans for wool-based products. All potential aspects are considered, and Limoneira exemplifies what it truly means to be environmentally forward-thinking and highly resourceful.

Watch this “Living Local” video above from this past Earth Day that shares these and the other forward-thinking environmental initiatives in detail.

In the Produce News
Lemons and limes are increasingly popular as the demand for citrus around the world jumps! The import share of the total U.S. lemon supply was 19% in 2019; in 2010, the import share of the total U.S. lemon supply was 9%, according to the USDA. Furthermore, they also reported that U.S. imports of limes have increased from about 800 million pounds in 2010 to 1.36 billion pounds in 2019! Because lemons and limes can be versatile elements of many recipes, they have also benefited from the boom in retail demand for produce considering the increase in home cooking during the pandemic, according to an article recently published within the produce industry. So, unlike holiday items that enjoy spikes only on special occasions, Limoneira citrus has consistent growth, not sporadic, and that’s something we’re especially zesty about!

Fresh & Healthy
Limoneira’s Take a Healthy Stand™ campaign showcases the many ways that lemons can play a role in helping to alleviate serious health issues. First, did you know that certain diet and lifestyle factors can speed up the aging process? For example, oxidative damage from the build-up of free radicals speeds up the aging process, which can result in wrinkles, age spots, dryness and decreased skin elasticity. No worries though! Limoneira can help you fight that! In fact, the National Institute of Health has published research studies that have demonstrated that antioxidants may help slow aging and improve skin health, and Limoneira lemons are the perfect go-to for this. Both the peel and juice are rich in Vitamin C, an antioxidant that also supports collagen production, which is important for skin elasticity and skin health. What in the World?
This month we will be celebrating Memorial Day, and one of the traditional ways to spend it is hitting the beach! If you’ll be one of the lucky folks taking in the sandy beaches and ocean this holiday, we thought this fact might be the inspiration you need to uplevel your sandcastle building skills! Check out the world’s tallest sandcastle, standing at 54 ft 9 in and made in Germany! Using approximately 3,500 tons of sand, this castle took a team of artists almost a month to complete! This incredible project landed the Guinness World Record, and you’ll see carved images of tourist attractions from around the world, including Athens' Acropolis, Barcelona's Sagrada Familia, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Who’s ready to get digging? Read the full story here.
